Eh the smaller parties didn't resonate with people so much this time around and we were closer to a 2-party state in the past. I mean we had the unionist party supplant the conservatives and liberals during ww1.

I mean, a World War and the resulting turmoil probably would be enough to dislodge the conservatives today. Thats exactly the sort of "MUCH worse" I was talking about.

Being negative is cheap and doesn't inspire anyone. That's what the powerful few want. I want to hear solutions not complaining.

No, but neither does lying. Saying "Just support the small parties more" isn't a realistic fix in our current system, nor does any other, "sit at home and hope things improve strategy." Large scale organization is needed, and letting people think it'll get better with their inaction only helps the established parties too.

The only way it'll get better is if people get angry and force the government to listen - look at any rights movement ever. Lying to people won't get them off their asses. What might, is the realization that things will keep getting worse unless they actually step-up and start organizing.

You're missing my point. Under FPTP, small parties are rapidly shrinking and losing power. Outside the two party system, only 30 seats are held currently (down from 59), and this will continue to shrink.

The only directly political way this will change is if BQ and NDP form an alliance to force election reform through. How likely do you really think that is, given their lack of action in the past?

Indirectly, you need en-masse, organized voting for small parties and or a massive, enconomy threatening strike. Neither is going to happen unless things get MUCH worse.

My point is that neither of these methods work, because they require simultaneous support from large portions of the country. Canada is too complacent for that.

Even when it came to trying to prevent a Trump brown-noser from become Prime-Minister by putting an X on a peice of paper, we couldn't get 70% participation. Do you really think we can get even 10% of people to strike? Or like 50% of people to vote for small parties simultaneously?

Thats obviously not to say it isn't worth trying, but its absurd to expect results at this point. No one cares enough to force change.

[-] PlzGivHugs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago

You do realize the block lost a third of their seats? The whole problem with the current system is that unless you can get the entirely country to simultaneously change who they back, you just further entrench whichever party is worse. Your solution boils down to, "Get people to support smaller parties instead." That doesn't work in a two party system, as evidenced by the current condition of our voting system, and by every other FPTP country out there.

The only way the current system changes is an organized, country-wide show of resistance that actually hurts the rich and powerful. This probably means a general strike. Unfortunately, people aren't going to be willing to rock the boat until things start to get unlivable, and by that point extremists and grifters will be firmly entrenched and will seize power instead.

I didn't say you said to only vote. I said voting out the current two parties is unrealistic.

So what do you propose we do that will convince the government to give up their power, short of voting them out or a general strike?

[-] PlzGivHugs@sh.itjust.works 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Pressure as it "voting for other people" and "nationwide general strike" or pressure as in "Thoughts and prayers" online?

Because the first isn't going to happen, as evident by this election, and the second hasn't achieved anything so far, and will continue to achive nothing because it isn't actually pressure.

I was curious how the activity stats on the sidebar are calculated. I was looking through the GitHub, but I'm not familiar with Rust, so I was having trouble parsing everything.

Would anyone be able to point me to the relevant section on github?

My partner is interested in learning some of the games I play, so I'm trying to find some introductory games to get her used to the common control schemes.

Off the top of my head, it'd probably have to be games that...

  • Have few inputs beyond the basics
  • Are not difficult or punishing
  • Are approachable mechanically (So as not to overwhelm them when they're focus on learning basic controls)
  • 2D is probably preferable, since its easier to understand and process whats happening at a glance.
  • Multiplayer would probably also be a strong bonus, but also not required

The only game that particularly comes to mind is Portal, but hopefully others will have some better ideas.

I'm trying to find a decent wireless headset for day-to-day use. It'd be for a lot of teleconferencing as well as some gaming, music, and other normal stuff. In particular, I'm looking for a pair of over-ears, since wearing on-ears or in-ears for longer periods is uncomfortable (esspecially with glasses), want something with a fold-up or removeable microphone to prevent damage, and have a pretty limited budget: $200CAD, equivalent to about $100USD.

My standards aren't that high for general quality, but I wasn't finding much that met my criteria. As-is I was debating between the Logitech Vibe 100 (Seemed like it was decent all-around, and it comes in white or pink, which is a bonus) or the Corsair Void RGB Elite (mainly for the large ear cups). I know both these options are pretty gamer-y, which is usually bad, and the Corsair headset is ancient, but I haven't really found anything that looks better. Does anyone have any better options?

Edit: The Logitech G733 also looks promising.

I'm trying to find mechanical keyboards that are not black/grey, are standard or TKL, and are hotswappable. I have yet to find a site that allows you to sort by all three chritiria, nonetheless sort though multiple brands/sites. Has anyone made a site along these lines?

Edit: like what pcpartpicker offers for most other computer parts

Edit 2: Keeb-finder is what I was looking for. Its support for non-American stuff isn't great, but its better than nothing.

Was hoping to do a little bit of advertising on other platforms. Anyone have any good, "intro to the fediverse" type infographics. For example, graphics that explain breifly what it is and how to join, or recommend a few good starting instances.

I saw this posted a couple days ago which pretty succinctly summarizes the current state of the market.

Commented this a year ago, and its just as relevant today.

Yes, I know DRM-free means you can still physically play the games. Thats not what I'm asking.

Sparked by a recent discussion about DRM, I'm wondering what happens legally when different game stores close. For example, if Steam shuts down, are licences presumed to presist or are they revoked? What about GOG, Itch.io or Epic? I couldn't find anything in the terms of service specifying.

Okay, but any significant plans to make the launcher or store itself worth using?

I'm looking to buy a decent keyboard - nothing ridiculous as I'm not a keyboard enthusiast, but decent enough for regular use. In particular, I'm looking for something...

  • tkl or full size, nothing with a non-standard arrow key layout
  • Pink or pink and white (or white but cheap enough I can buy keycaps with it)
  • Quieter switches and shorter travel are perfered, but not a deal breaker
  • Available in Canada

Currently I'm mostly looking at the Razer BlackWidow V3 for $122 CAD. I'm not exactly a Razor fan, but the only competitve option I found was the Ducky One 3 TKL for $171 CAD. I'm sure the quality is better, and the hotswappable switches are very nice, but it lacks the backlight and the media controls while being $50 more expensive.

Is there a better option I'm missing, or a good reason to pick one or the other?

I know this is a bit more tech-support oriented, but I was hoping someone might have first or second hand experience fixing this, given what a nightmare it is to research and test.

I'm using a semi-recent Samsung phone, running their skin of Android 14. Currently, I'm using PIA as my vpn (yes, I know I should switch) through the OpenVPN app. I also experience this issue through PIA's app leading me to think its an Android issue. I also leave both the "Always-on VPN" and "Block Connections without a VPN" enabled.

I've tried to do some research, but everything that I find is search engines directing to basic stuff like how to connect to wifi

Edit: I'm currently testing the memory management tweak, and Ill probably try wireguard next.

Edit 2: In case anyone ends up here from Google, I've swapped VPNand tried removing all restrictions on memory and battery usage with no luck. I have also found a bunch of people complaining about similar issues with other Samsung devices, so it may be related. For example, this threat from Reddit, with all the responses removed: https://old.reddit.com/r/nordvpn/comments/t8t1hf/connectivity_issues_with_new_phone_android/

There's also itch.io, which is great. It does have a lack of game selection, but we're comparing it to GOG, so...

Basically any word or short phrase I can think of to mean "a lot of muscle" also implies skinny or almost no fat. Fit, or lithe bring to mind more a track athlete's body, and buff, ripped, jacked, muscular, ect. generally are though of more like a body builder. The closest thing I can think of is dad-bod but thats obviously still pretty far off as well as being male-specific. Is there even an English word for this?

From what I could track down, here is all the available data on the polling methodology:

The Empower “Secret to Success” study is based on online survey responses from 2,203 Americans ages 18+ fielded by Morning Consult from September 13-14, 2024. The survey is weighted to be nationally representative of U.S. adults (aged 18+).

It also comes not from a polling company, but from a company that provides financial news, and financial services. No potential conflict of interest there...

Basically, the data is near-worthless.

Skibidi Toilet is a serious of SFM shorts that became popular with young kids. Think in the same vein as the weird flash videos or early SFM videos that were popular with young kids 10-15 years ago. "Skibidi" doesn't mean anything and is just taken from that.
