Does anyone know how I can set a keyboard shortcut to open a selected file in a particular application? For example, how can I have .html files set to open in a text editor by default, but set a keyboard shortcut to open one in Firefox if it's selected?

I'm using the Nautilus file manager in GNOME 48 on Debian 13

Strange times when a government contract gets cancelled because the government themselves are hopelessly corrupt, rather than it getting cancelled because the company is atrocious.

you can expect 0-2% output from a panel in the winter time

I can confirm this. My family is off-grid and there have been extended periods the last two winters when it has simply been too dark for too long to depend on the solar without installing 50x more panels.

Also, the problem with having larger battery capacity to span these periods is that if they don't get fully recharged or cycled properly the batteries get damaged and eventually die. We learnt that the hard way.

Solar is the undisputed champion for 80-90% of the year but needs to be complemented with something else for the remainder, if you want uninterrupted on-demand electricity.

Happy New Year ADHDers!

As promised, here are the results of our scientifically rigorous poll about which things are the worst for taking over your dopamine system:

  1. Scrolling
  2. Someone is wrong on the Internet
  3. Phone notifications
  4. Video games
  5. Maladaptive daydreaming
  6. Unfinished projects that should be quick to finish
  7. Sleep-deprivation-induced mania
  8. Alcohol
  9. Reading internet to drown out own thoughts
  10. Expensive hobbies
[-] oeuf@slrpnk.net 34 points 1 month ago

My understanding is that it's a no in both cases by default. AFAIK watching in Freetube doesn't even add to a videos number of views.

I basically just assume that anything which is closed-source, networked and has sensors of any kind is a spying device. It's easier than evaluating each one individually.

Comment with one of your worst dopamine hijackers; something which takes over and hogs your dopamine system, and on New Years Day I'll go through the comments and rank the top ten on how many upvotes they get and edit this post with the results as well as make a new post. Maybe even make a New Years Resolution based on it!

If there are any duplicates only the one with the most upvotes will be counted. Any comments/replies which are chat or reactions will obviously be disregarded from the final count.

Results:

  1. Scrolling
  2. Someone is wrong on the Internet
  3. Phone notifications
  4. Video games
  5. Maladaptive daydreaming
  6. Unfinished projects that should be quick to finish
  7. Sleep-deprivation-induced mania
  8. Alcohol
  9. Reading internet to drown out own thoughts
  10. Expensive hobbies

404 in apt (slrpnk.net)
submitted 1 month ago by oeuf@slrpnk.net to c/linux@lemmy.ml

Just today I'm getting errors when trying to install software via apt in Debian 13. Specifically ardour and gnome-boxes. Other packages seem to be unaffected, like gimp and blobwars for example. The errors are all variations of the following:

Err:1 http://deb.debian.org/debian trixie/main amd64 libwebsockets19t64 amd64 4.3.5-1 404 Not Found [IP: 151.101.62.132 80] Error: Failed to fetch http://deb.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libw/libwebsockets/libwebsockets19t64_4.3.5-1_amd64.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 151.101.62.132 80]

Looking online the suggestion seems to be that I might have /etc/apt/sources.list misconfigured. Is it this causing the problem, or something else?

Here is my sources.list

# deb cdrom://[Debian GNU/Linux 13.0.0 _Trixie_ - Official amd64 NETINST with firmware 20250809-11:2>

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie main non-free-firmware

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie-updates main non-free-firmware

# This system was installed using removable media other than
# CD/DVD/BD (e.g. USB stick, SD card, ISO image file).
# The matching "deb cdrom" entries were disabled at the end
# of the installation process.
# For information about how to configure apt package sources,
# see the sources.list(5) manual.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Pretty much what the title says. Also, how long does it usually last for when it happens?

Solitude (slrpnk.net)

Is it an ADHD thing to need time alone more than neurotypical people do? And if so, how do make sure you get it?

I haven't been diagnosed with ADHD but am starting to suspect that I have it.

One thing I know about myself is that I REALLY struggle if I can't have time alone and it's also the main thing that I know that the people in my life struggle to accept about me. It makes me feel really bad not getting enough time alone and not feeling like it's OK with other people if I take it.

Not sure if this is something people with ADHD relate to. Maybe you guys can tell me?

Thought experiment:

If the world was going to get reconfigured in 2026 for maximum benefit to people with ADHD, what would it look like?

I've just started using Soulseek and it's great. I want to make sure that I'm being a good neighbour on it - do I need to do anything to ensure that my files are available for others to download? And do I need to structure directories e.g Artist name > Album name or does it work off metadata?

Any sleep advice? (slrpnk.net)
submitted 3 months ago by oeuf@slrpnk.net to c/parenting@lemmy.world

Can anyone offer some advice on getting an 18-month-old to sleep at night?

Until now the three techniques we've had are 1) feeding to sleep on the boob, 2) walking to sleep in the sling and 3) falling asleep in the car. Number 3 is only good for naps in the daytime, number 2 is getting difficult as our kid is getting big and heavy (and is a PITA at night anyway, and number 1 is starting to become less reliable/effective.

What have you learnt about getting kids (particularly this age, if relevant) to sleep?

Many thanks!

GIMP 3 is the bees knees 💪

There are some great plugins coming out for it now as well. I highly recommend checking out Batcher, which you can use not only to batch convert files but also to apply sets of adjustments including from G'MIC. Really powerful and useful tool with granular control.

There's also a really good frequency separation plugin and of course Resynthesizer.

Great times to be a GIMP user.
