i vaguely recall reading a story some 20 years ago from some established US media outlet about a disinfo campaign run by the US to bamboozle the world in order to disguise a classified military program -- i don't recall the specifics anymore and I can't seem to find anything concrete now. I do recall the feeling of shock after having read about it because the implication that the US could actually make something a 'known' thing around the world that wasn't in fact known at all in order to cover up the reality of a military program was horrifying to me at that time.

It's really bugging me that I can't remember what it was now. Google is worthless for searching for information anymore.

That's basically a description of Area 51. It's likely stealth bombers flew test flights there before details of the aircraft were made public, for example. The US supports conspiracies of alien UFOs to use as cover for experiments/testing of vehicles and weaponry. Atom bomb test? Nope! It was an alien disintegration beam. Prototype aircraft malfunction and crash? Nope! Alien escape pod!
