Image is Israeli interceptors trying and failing to intercept missiles over their cities.

Israel just carried out a widespread bombing of Iran, which has killed a number of senior officials inside Iran (though it seems the leadership is more-or-less intact) as well as a number of civilians. Important facilities have been targeted, but the amount of damage is unknown so far (note that many important Iranian facilities are deep underground, making them both hard to damage but also hard to determine if they are damaged from just satellite imagery, so reports of damage will be he-said-she-said).

It appears the attack took Iran by surprise, given that a residential block was targeted that contained some senior officials - if one saw an attack coming, one would imagine they'd be in bunkers. Nonetheless, like the rest of the Resistance Axis, I suspect that Iran has adapted their military structures to be resistant to decapitation strikes by ensuring that replacement figures are ready to take the place of killed officials.

Iran has delivered a massive missile barrage in response to Israeli aggression, even though Israel is continuing to bomb Iran. Iran is now aware of the location of many important Israeli sites, including secret nuclear sites, due to their recent intelligence haul, giving them a distinct edge.

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Hasanabi on twitch is currently streaming from the front line of LA protests. An unlawful assembly was just declared for the area.

It might get interesting/horrifying as the sun begins to go down. Police are currently firing rubber bullets and using teargas.

[-] mkultrawide@hexbear.net 28 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Kinda crazy to watch him in the middle of a crowd getting flash banged, tear gassed, and rubber bullets shot at it, and people are just running up to him for pics in the chaos.

Not into Twitch and never saw Hasan before this, but y'know, he's been putting other people's safety first, keeping a cool head, and helping the confused and panicked libs, so I gotta say, pretty solid first impression of this guy.

[-] Chertstone@hexbear.net 22 points 4 hours ago

He is more pleasant when he is active on the ground and not calling NK a monarchy, yes.

[-] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 26 points 4 hours ago

Sheesh, well, an overwhelming number of people at the protests this afternoon seem to think that you can invoke the law like a magic charm to stop the cops and are waving american flags, so the bar on today is pretty low.

[-] Chertstone@hexbear.net 22 points 4 hours ago

Yeah its a bit rich demanding citizens attack for their hispanic heritage to wave the flag of the government that’s targeting them.

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 43 points 4 hours ago

That’s their fault for not being peaceful, refusing to fly American flags, and focusing too much on Palestine. My police-friendly protest didn’t even have cops because we weren’t committing any crimes. We even begged them to let us spit shine their shoes but they refused like the humble servants of the people they are.

Non-lethal aint a joke so it's a good idea to get something to protect your face and especially eyes if you're going to the ice protests.

🚨BREAKING : Israeli Military Headquarters Reportedly Hit Again in Tel Aviv

@alon_mizrahi reports Iran has struck HaKirya, the Israeli military headquarters in central Tel Aviv, for a second time. The site—home to the Israeli military General Staff and Israel’s Ministry of Defense—is one of the country’s most heavily fortified and symbolically important military compounds.

We are working to confirm the extent of the damage.

[-] departee@hexbear.net 40 points 4 hours ago

I think that a pattern may be emerging in what Iran has been doing so far, and may be changing right now, with the barrage directed at Israel's industrial heart in the north:

The first waves weren't too dense: not hundreds of missiles, but dozens. And they touched almost every strategic point in Israel.

It's as if the Iranians have been working to calibrate the accuracy and efficacy of their weapons, trying to verify not only where the air defenses were located and how efficient they were, but also that their navigation systems were not compromised, and what kind of damage they were actually causing on impact in the most real-world scenario.

It looks like this calibration phase is over. Tonight, with the barrage directed at the north, it looks like the intent was actual devastation, not just touching a target.

This makes a lot of sense, if that's what they've been doing at the opening stage. But it also means that as this goes on, the attackers will be more focused and vicious, and intended to actually neutralize a major target, and not just demonstrate an ability to touch it. As I said two days ago, HaKirya base is key. And if I'm not mistaken, it is going to be pummeled soon in a visible and unmistakable way

@MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net is this wishful thinking?

[-] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 17 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

It’s definitely calibration and locating/weeding out air defenses. I feel confident in this assertion because we are yet to see a cruise missile barrage, which are far easier to intercept than ballistic missiles. Iran is likely saving them for saturation barrages to overwhelm defenses and take them out.

Not that Israel will be caught by total surprise if it faces a cruise missile barrage, but it could certainly be caught more flat-footed after scrambling to defend against ballistic missiles nonstop for days

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 11 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

The problem with Iran's cruise missile is, will the survivability and effectiveness be any better than the one way attack drones, and how many cruise missiles does Iran have? The drones have not hit a single target yet. Iran has three cruise missile types with the range to hit Israel, Kh-55, Hoveyzeh, and Paveh, and none of these have stealth features, with no reduction in radar cross section or heat signature. Sure they travel a lot faster than one way attack drones and can fly very low to try avoid detection by ground based radars, but the USA and Israel have plenty of AWACS aircraft and fighter jets equipped with advanced AESA radars with look down shoot down capabilities to intercept during their 1000+km journey.

Also the cruise missile and ballistic missile intercept systems are very different, the only overlapping system is David's Sling. The ballistic missile interception systems like Arrow-3, SM-3, THAAD and Arrow-2 can't intercept cruise missiles. Iron Dome can intercept cruise missiles, but not ballistic missiles. Only David's Sling can intercept both ballistic and aerodynamic targets. Fighter jets like the F-35 can assist in ballistic missile interception by using their advanced radars and DAS, but they can't fire anything at a ballistic missile to take it out. So exhausting ballistic missile interceptors will have little effect on cruise missile interception capability.

[-] CoolerOpposide@hexbear.net 8 points 3 hours ago

Definitely, but I believe the point here would be a one or two time overwhelming barrage to cause mass confusion/soften some anti-ballistic defenses.

EDIT: AI Generated

Is this real? It's being reported as a missile hitting the top of an apartment building. Something looks a little off about it, like the missile is travelling too slowly.

If real, it's one of the most impactful we've seen so far.

https://tankie.tube/w/dvUptCv7eVn8kiRpPRzXFF

EDIT: Clearer video https://tankie.tube/w/qXdEFiSyWPS5NU2FR2A3jX

The clearer video was taken from Fars News so I assume it is indeed real.

[-] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 18 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

It literally looks like from an 80's movie, especially when compared to other videos I have watched.

[-] catonkatonk@hexbear.net 19 points 4 hours ago

The clearer one says "Veo" on the bottom right. And obviously, the way the camera moves in at the end is a bit strange. As is the fact that emergency services are already there for some reason.

[-] Rojo27@hexbear.net 19 points 4 hours ago

In case anyone doesn't know Veo is Google's AI gen. video service. So yeah probably fake.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 21 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

~~Could be real, looks really similar to this building that was hit.~~

Looking at the clearer video, I don't think so, looks like a different building and there's police cars already there. So I'm leaning a lot towards fake on the video. But an apartment building did get hit and suffer damage.

[-] Hermes@hexbear.net 16 points 4 hours ago

Video looks super fake yeah. Missile is way too slow for what we have seen, most hits are going ~3x faster than that on impact, I think an actual missile would just rip through that top part and hit the ground.

[-] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 52 points 5 hours ago

These arent hyperosnic missiles. I mean, yes, they travel that fast, but they're ballistic in their flight path (ie. arced to and from space) so they're classed as ballistic.

Hypersonic missiles will travel in the atmosphere in erratic and low altitudes fo avoid interception
