I'm Australian, and burger with the lot where I come from involves the following Bun Bacon Egg Lettuce Tomato Pineapple Beetroot Meat Onion Sauce maybe. That's the minimum you expect anyway

I was on board with pineapple in some scenarios. Carl's Jr does a teriyaki burger with pineapple that's alright.

But beets? Apparently even the food is trying to kill you down under.

What's the debate? Whether it tastes nice or not? Seeing the popularity of both pineapple pizza and pineapple/cheese and honey burgers (at least in Europe), I guess it's tasty enough for a bunch of people.

I swear, some people will take a stand for anything besides important things, lol. God? Morals? Imperialism? Nah, I'm gonna spend my limited time and even more limited brainpower on cuisine debates... 🙄🤷

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago

I'm not debating it just curious if it's a thing where others are from

[-] Resplendent606@piefed.social 10 points 2 days ago

I would eat it on a burger but beetroot (that you listed) does not sound appetizing.

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

I'm certain it's an Australian thing but sliced thin is great

[-] coaxil@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Don't forget is also basically pickled how we do it! So fucking good

[-] spongebue@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Burgers and pizza (and omelettes) are the perfect "blank canvas" foods. You can be boring with few/no toppings, you can be traditional with the expected combinations, or you can flex your creativity with whatever else your heart comes up with.

Either way, it's an ingredient with plenty of potential, but it needs to be countered somehow. Canadian bacon doesn't do it for me, in pizza but pepperoni and jalapeno does! For burgers... I like the comment mentioning soy sauce, but if I had to think of something on my own... Hmmm, maybe grilled with grilled jalapeno, crispy onion, and some cream cheese? Basically a jalapeno popper burger with the pineapple shaking things up and the crispy onion adds some crunch?

Damn, now I'm hungry

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

I grill the jalapenos every time I make myself a burger. And almost every time I make a burger for other people too.

I've never done soy sauce on a burger, but with a couple other choice/complimentary ingredients it could be an insane combo.

[-] spongebue@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

If you wanted to do pineapple and soy sauce together, I bet that marinating the pineapple in some soy sauce (probably the low sodium kind for this one) would work great!

The juiciness of burgers & pineapples allow for better texture/mixture & flavour distribution/experience imho compared to pizzas that are usually relatively drier.

Same for various cuts of apples.

[-] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 days ago

Judging people on the kind of food they like is literally the dumbest shit ever. You're not the one eating it so why do you care?

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago

I'm sorry, I asked an opinion. Just like asking what did you think of Harry potter or lotr. Shit didn't realise we can only talk about absolutely serious things.

Do you think we have free will?

[-] HiddenLayer555@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago

Apologies, I should have made it more clear that I was talking in general and not directed at you or this post specifically.

In the UK I'd say it's rare. Only a select few restaurants put pineapple slices in a burger, and they are mostly homegrown family-run businesses and, rarely, chains like Beefeater.

I'd love to try one. Here the standard quality burger is (bottom to top): bun, lettuce, tomato, meat, onion, bacon if any, pickled gherkin slices, sauce, cheese slice. If that sounds bland by comparison it's because this is England.

The fancy ones can have egg, hash brown, chilli peppers and/or mushrooms, but I've not yet seen beetroot in a burger

[-] Default_Defect@midwest.social 6 points 2 days ago

I like pineapple on its own. I'm just not a big fan of pineapple on things. I don't need everything I eat to be savory and sweet.

[-] FriendOfDeSoto@startrek.website 8 points 2 days ago

I don't like "belong" here. Pineapple is food. People like it, or like it in certain combinations, or they don't. Highly concentrated uranium or arsenic really don't belong in food. Pineapple is not the same as uranium.

If you've ever been a student or cash strapped you've eaten various uncommon combinations of food. You didn't care what belonged together or not. And neither should anyone care in this regard. Outside of poison and allergies, we don't need to be paternalistic about telling people what to eat or not. People who get internet mad about pineapple on pizza need to reevaluate their life choices.

I like pineapple pizza (as long as the pineapple pieces aren't too big), but that burger sounds annoying. Not saying the flavors don't combine well, but the amount of toppings makes it sound way too tall unless the slices are razor thin.

[-] scytale@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

Aloha Burger! It’s good.

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

There is only one place pineapple belongs ...

In HELL.

Funnily enough, I had a burger with pineapple on it when I was in Australia. It was great, I really liked the juiciness and taste the pineapple brought to the burger.

Granted, it was at an Oporto (which is kinda like upscale McDonald's with a Portuguese theme to it for the uninitiated), but it was pretty good nonetheless; I'd have it again.

[-] venusaur@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Islands Hawaiian burger

[-] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Definitely not, generally mixing intense sweet and meat is not for me.

[-] ShittyBeatlesFCPres@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Grilled pineapple or pineapple tossed in a crawfish boil is excellent and would be a great burger addition. But it can’t just be a slice of pineapple. Too sweet. It would mess up the cheese flavor. You need to get rid of some of the sugar.

[-] RisingSwell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

Yes but I'm also Australian so that's normal

[-] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Pineapple. It's not just for pizza anymore.

Cake, pizza, chocolate, burgers, ice cream, candy, hot chocolate, soda, pancakes, omelets, chicken, s'mores, salads, peanut butter, rice, sandwiches, and many more things I can't think of right now.

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago

My mum used to make pineapple cheese cake, they were no good. Nice creamy cheese cake then crunch, a random surprising chunk of pineapple

[-] jimmux@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

You just reminded me that pineapple upside-down cakes were a common thing in the 80's. At least where I was. What happened to those?

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Its a burger.

On a bun.

Add ketchup if you like.

I don't care.

[-] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago

I've never had it but I'd imagine it'd be good

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

How's the egg cooked on that thing?

[-] jimmux@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago

Typically just fried on the grill with the patty, bacon, and onion.

[-] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 2 points 2 days ago

Just fried, some like it runny others cooked through.

The only time I've ever had it was at a Disneyland resort, and that was not at all a good burger. I assume it would be nice on a higher quality burger.
