I don’t understand the premise of frequent recesses, anymore. They seemed reasonable when people were traveling by horse and buggy and required 2-4 weeks to get back to their district, but now? In the era of phones and planes, why do they still deserve to get half the year off?

[-] Catoblepas@piefed.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 weeks ago

Because it’s a club and we’re not in it.

Because you allow it.

[-] dhork@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Well, it shouldn't quite be half the year, but it makes sense to plan some official time to be back in your district. Your constituents shouldn't have to travel to DC to see you in person.

[-] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

But they’re mostly just dicking around elsewhere with the free time. The time isn’t bound to any structure. I wouldn’t doubt that we get less time with our representatives today than at the founding of the country, when dying of dysentery was a plausible end for a casual walk.

[-] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

Also with telecommunications, we should reasonably be able to access our representatives wherever they are at all times. It's not like we don't live in a videoconference connected world, we absolutely do. We have phones, email, videoconferencing, and all manner of being able to directly contact our representatives without having to travel to Washington DC.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Since DC can get very hot and humid in the summers, I can see why you'd want to get the heck out of there in the days before AC.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago

The MAGA Nazis are avoiding meeting their constituents at all costs. It's just a vacation for them.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 0 points 1 week ago

Probably not. Appeasing their corporate overlords takes a lot of work.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The real constituents.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

They still need all that time off to suck up to the donor class, though, don't they? Because fuck you, is why.

[-] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago

Trumps on the list. Trumps on the list. Trumps on the list. The GOP is trying to hide it. Trumps a child fucker. Trumps a child fucker. Trumps a child fucker. The GOP is trying to hide it.

[-] PMmeTrebuchets@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago

Oh so he's on the list, got it

[-] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Well, this will put those conspiracy allegations to bed.

[-] lmdnw@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

“Christian” Mike Johnson doing his best to give cover to pedophiles. Wonder if him and his son discuss these sins at bedtime together while going over their porn monitoring.

[-] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

No rule against pedophilia in the Ten Commandments.

[-] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It really seems like most of Christianity's leadership fucks kids pr enables others to do so. Its disgusting.

[-] thehowlingnorth@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 weeks ago

So Christian he's practically Catholic.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Don't lump chickens in with them. This isn't cowardice, it's complicity.

[-] CalipherJones@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

A lot of the people in charge of the country are child rapists.

Thanks. I'm embarrassed to admit that I thought the 2003 birthday letter was a meme, until right now.

Like the text was real, but somebody superimposed it onto a lurid drawing, adding T's signature for extra disgust.

Turns out it was Trump himself who did all that. And thanks to the WSJ for holding up to at least some journalistic integrity, sticking to the truth.

[-] 6stringringer@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

I’m not enjoying the mental boner that was supposed to encourage such tattling on a grandiose scale. Frankly, I am let down and hurt. I need more. C’mon, ya’ll are better than this.

[-] bravesilvernest@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Hold up, last I checked its still July...I think you have another week there Mr speaker

Imagine if we could dock a weeks pay for them going home...

[-] floo@retrolemmy.com 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The mass majority of their “pay” comes from grifts, donors, and other corruption outside of their official salary from the Congress.

[-] CalipherJones@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Why do they get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars while at the same time skipping entire months worth of work?

[-] 4am@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They go back to their districts and work there for most of it. Supposed to keep them informed about the will of the people.

I’m sure most just vacation the whole time but some might still give a shit, I dunno

[-] ultranaut@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Most of them spend a huge amount of their time fundraising whether congress is in session or not.

[-] AngryRobot@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Jn whatever country replaces the US, we need to have publicly funded elections. We have to get the money out of politics. Eliminate PACs while we're at it.

[-] oppy1984@lemdro.id 1 points 1 week ago

Right? I wish I could tell my boss I'm taking an extra week of vacation and the company will not only not punish me but will pay me for the time I'm not working.

[-] BigMacHole@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago

This is the DEMOCRATS Fault that the Republican led House is Protecting Infamous CHILD SEX TRAFFICKER Jeffrey Epstein and his Best Friend Republican President DONALD J TRUMP!

[-] pinheadednightmare@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

A whole week early? Unacceptable. I don’t get an extended vacation when I feel like it. Why should they?

[-] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago

Because you allow it.
