This is the first time I can remember the previous console getting more expensive when the next console releases.

I got my GameCube for $50 when the wii came out

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 38 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

GameCube is a pretty extreme case. They were practically giving them away once the wii hit big. Going up is insane.

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago

Did this happen with the NES when super NES came out? That’s the only real comparison I can think of with Nintendo having back to back successful consoles.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

Nope. Parents were new to the idea of upgrading a console in the first place and they focused most of their non-child advertising in telling parents there is a genuine difference even if they already have a Nintendo Machine. Genesis had also come out 2 years earlier and NES prices dropped to compete in the meantime.

[-] QuietCupcake@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

It wasn't a different console entirely, but the original PS5 got more expensive when the subsequently released PS5 slim came out. Unlike PS4 where both original and slim versions got cheaper when the PS4 slim released. PS5 pro is an additional $200 more than the slim (a $700 console).

Yeah but the GameCube didn't sell well like the switch has. The Wii releasing massively lowered demand, whereas the switch 2 probably had little effect on switch sales

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

Some kind of stupid expensive smart alarm clock for manbabies. I forgot this thing existed for a while.

[-] graymess@hexbear.net 19 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

They were charging $100 for that fucking thing? It's literally the Nintendo branded version of this, but with nothing cool about the design.

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago

Okay but it will apparently detect when you get out of bed and play a victory fanfare when you do. Which I wouldn't pay a premium for but is kind of whimsy.

[-] 9to5@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago

Dayum you just sold me on it . I take 20 of them

[-] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

I remember seeing reddit-logo posts where people complained that it didn't work if you slept in a bed with a partner lol

New type of guy: the treatsky.

“Porky won’t let me so much as rent because he keeps giving himself a raise. Government keeps taking away my treats calling them ‘unchristian’, I am now a radical leftist. These pigs deserve less and they’re in the way of my treats.”

Saw this coming.

Not enough reason to drop $$$ on switch 2 when switch 1 is a great enough console that they are obligated to support for a reasonable amount of time. To sell more switch 2s they have to deter people from buying switch 1s.

Or they could just stop producing them - that's what they'd do if they were smart - because that would raise switch 1 prices without them being fucking obvious about it.

[-] Carcharodonna@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

Or you could use that money for a Steam Deck which can emulate Switch games and pretty much everything else.

It wouldn't surprise me if they already did and just overproduced them (and are raising the prices anyways because fuck-a-you it's Nintendo mario-finger

[-] volcel_olive_oil@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I keep telling people computers are never going down in price ever again and they keep not believing me despite it keeping happening stairs

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 5 points 2 days ago

I think people understand that it is just blatant price gouging, and (in some cases) computers could be potentially half their current price and still turn a profit for these companies.

But they don't take the next step, and realise that companies will just do this forever if they can get away with it, they think that the "invisible hand of the market" will magically fix it.
