Can't wait for the big corpos to cry about how selling an actually good game for a fair price is bad and something that customers can't expect.

[-] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 8 points 3 days ago

The only time I go "mmmcry more"

[-] overload@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

As a team-cherry-pilled Australian, I'm so proud to see some of my own people putting out a decent game at a decent price. Silksong is the #1 most wishlisted game on Steam, they could have taken the bag but care more about longevity and goodwill as a developer.

Absolute props to them.

[-] Kongar@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 days ago

Them being cool about the price means:

  • I buy hollow knight again on steam (I played it on switch)
  • I buy silksong on day 1 without waiting for reviews
  • if it’s really good, I probably buy it for a friend someday

Reasonable pricing does not equal lower sales. Greedy pricing leads to lower total sales, waiting for discounts, and screw you piracy.

These are regular people - they understand.

May I suggest buying it on GOG instead if you care about DRM-free?

[-] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 16 points 3 days ago

That's a great price. I'm not even on the Silksong hypetrain and fully intended to wait for a discount a few years down the line, but I might just get it for that a few days after release if the reviews are good.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 13 points 3 days ago

Have you played the original Hollow Knight? I don't think you need to in order to play Silksong, but it'll help you know what to expect and it's also just a great game.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 days ago

I feel like I'm the only one who didn't think Hollow Knight was anything special.

Not a bad game by any means, but it's kind of just a decent metroidvania with a cool art style. I've never understood the insane amount of hype.

[-] Krauerking@lemy.lol 2 points 1 day ago

Name the last metroidvania that was that themed and had good fight mechanics before hollow knight?

Cause axiom verge had been like a 100% clone of metroid and Dust came out in 2012 almost a decade earlier.
Hollow Knight was for a lot of people their first Metroidvania that tried to create its own thing and stuck to openworld of metroidvanias while letting you use different mechanics to move forward to bot make it linear.

Its beloved cause its honestly a rare game type.

[-] PonyOfWar@pawb.social 7 points 3 days ago

Yes, I played it for 12 hours and quite liked it, but eventually got stuck at some bossfight and moved on to other games.

[-] Krauerking@lemy.lol 1 points 1 day ago

Im gonna bet it was the Mantises cause that was like the great filter boss fight and ridiculously hard. That wall grab ability negates a lot of developers puzzles so i kind of get making sure you can fight the creatures you will find after.
Im hoping for a bit more fluid fighting.

[-] redsand@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

Knowing team cherry it'll get a holiday sale or launch sale so people can but it and Hollow Knight.

That's the price of a little micro transaction in some other games. It will be worth, but I also feel kind of bad for the devs (or publisher). After so much time and work to produce (hopefully) a high quality game and then this cheap. Not complaining, but wondering if a higher price wouldn't be too bad. I think 29,99 or 24,99 (~~the price of Factorio~~ Edit: oh wait, I forgot Factorio costs 32 Euros here in Germany) would be totally acceptable in a time like this where AAA games come out at 79,99.

[-] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 23 points 3 days ago

There's no publisher, they're as indie as they come. The original prototype and game were made by burning through their savings, and it sold millions of copies, so they're completely sheltered from need for the rest of their lives. Silksong is only adding to that wealth. I feel like they're very decent people who succeeded because they love what they do, and are good at it.

[-] Midnitte@beehaw.org 14 points 3 days ago

And by selling the sequel for basically the same price (adjusted for inflation), it seems like they're using that wealth for good by pressuring greedy publishers to push prices down, not up.

BL4 for $70 doesn't seem like all that great of a deal when you might spend more time with a $20 game.

[-] Krauerking@lemy.lol 3 points 1 day ago

Im laughing at how many games changed their launch window away from silksong and instead are going against BL4.
For some reason people arent seeing competition in Randy.

[-] catfeeder@piefed.blahaj.zone 18 points 3 days ago

Low price doesn't necessarily lead to less profit though, since the lesser the price, the more people who will be able to afford it. The devs probably want to get as many players as possible to play Silksong.

[-] Vupware@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

This price point makes impulse buys much more likely, which can make a huge difference when your game has so much hype.

[-] ech@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

but I also feel kind of bad for the devs

Why? They chose the price. They obviously think this is better than a $60+ price tag for a reason.

*Out of curiosity, I checked the HK release price and it was $15 USD in 2015, which, adjusted for inflation, is ~$20 today. So this is a pattern with their games.

[-] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 3 days ago

You could always buy two copies and send me one! /half-joking

[-] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 days ago

Honestly with all the free dlc from Hollow Knight and Team Cherry already stating plans for future dlcs for Silksong, I would probably drop $60 without thinking. I love indie games way more than the AAA bullshit that gets released now.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 2 points 3 days ago

There will probably be DLC and soundtracks you can buy if you really just want to give them more money.

[-] Gamerswithgains@retrolemmy.com 1 points 9 hours ago

The HK dlcs were free werent they?

[-] thingsiplay@beehaw.org 1 points 3 days ago

My point is less about me giving more money (I'm not that crazy about giving more money). My point was more about being curious about the reasons and decision of going this low. It's more of a curiosity how much they could ask, before its too high. They don't need spend money on advertisement, that's for sure. Maybe this whole waiting saga is part of their "self advertising strategy" (just made up this terminology).

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Lower price does not automatically equate to less profits.

Lower price usually means more sales. More sales means more profit.

Things have an optimal market price at which they'd make the most profit, and it's possible they did some calculations and decided $20 was it for this game.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 11 points 3 days ago

That is such a chad move.

It's going to sell no matter what the price. But knowing that, they set the price low, trusting they'll still make a profit on volume.

If MS, EA, UBI, or any other publisher were in control, they'd set the price high, no matter how big the actual game was, knowing they'd make even more because of the hype train around the game.

[-] spacedogroy@feddit.uk 6 points 3 days ago

I'm sure Silksong will be good - Shovel Knight was good. But I wonder if they've kept the price relatively low to move into the impulse buy territory, because even they know the amount of hype around the game is flash in the pan.

[-] apotheotic@beehaw.org 15 points 3 days ago

My favourite part of Shovel Knight was when they used the shovel to seal the radiance away

[-] minyakcurry 7 points 3 days ago

Dream shovel

[-] siipale@sopuli.xyz 4 points 2 days ago

No trench too great.
No ditch to dig.
No shovel to break.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip -4 points 3 days ago

Let me preorder it already you fuck

[-] tamlyn@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

Is there a reason to preorder a digital game?

[-] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

No, but I trust Team Cherry more than other game companies. I still will probably just wait till Thursday though.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip -1 points 3 days ago

No, but it's fun to tell a company that doesn't do this stuff
