[-] dariusj18@lemmy.world 49 points 1 month ago

I believe this is a scene from Christmas Carol.

Donald Duck was the main propagandist, that's why he was awarded the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class in the real life Navy.

It is routinely bewildering to remember that his standard outfit is a mid-century sailor's uniform because he was in World War II. Like oh right, by the way, this cartoon animal is a member of the United States armed forces, and fought Hitler.

The chokehold for reference (click for gif):

Get wrecked, mouse.

Imagine not wanting characters you like to be in stories that connect with people emotionally.

Imagine being this protective of a company mascot.

[-] Rose_Thorne@lemmy.zip 30 points 1 month ago

Nah, when Goofy gets taken down. Show them the true nature of the Mouse, with fire in his eyes and slaughter in his very soul.

I still want to know who went "Yeah, let's make kids think Goofy just fucking died", they didn't get paid enough.

[-] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago

And yet Epic Mickey got hamstrung by corporate demands to be more kid-friendly despite that going against the entire point of the project.

To my understanding, Disney was way more hands off for the early KH projects.

Then they saw how popular the series got, and decided they needed to flop their dick out on the table and ram it into every single facet they could.

The people who don't like conflict in their stories are extremely offputting. How bland can you be, for real?

[-] Kellenved@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 month ago

Sure Tiny Tim is dead but does Mickey have to be all whiny about it?

[-] frezik@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 1 month ago

For the icon of the whole company, Disney doesn't treat the character with any respect. When was the last time even Disney fans were excited about a new Mickey release? It's all direct to home video CGI films for young kids, and it's a less detailed render than the first Toy Story.

Compare to how Nintendo treats Mario or Zelda. They're active, prominent characters with real releases.

Disney is the reason copyrights last as long as they do but you'll note that they didn't bother trying to extend it this time with Steamboat Willie.

Ask anyone under 18 what franchise they think of when they hear "Disney" and it almost definitely won't be any of the Disney characters we grew up with. Nintendo has been actively diversifying their IP for decades knowing that eventually they'll lose the classics

"looks completely BROKEN."

Looks at Mouse: seems despondent and possibly wistful.

Is that the limit of anguish they've experienced in their media?

[-] subignition@fedia.io 9 points 1 month ago

Incidentally, kingdom hearts could now have Darth Vader in it

[-] formergijoe@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

And Homer Simpson.

Literally an anti-storytelling tweet. Like, if you don't want them to tell stories, what else is there?

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 4 points 1 month ago

Heirs of the Perisphere.

Howard Waldrop short story where animatronic versions of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy emerge from Tokyo DisneyWorld after WW3. They help the survivors rebuild the devastated world.

Thank you so much. I tried to find the pdf and failed miserably.

If you like Howard, look up Tanith Lee. She taught Neil Gaiman everything he ever stole.
