Every movie, TV programme or anything else that I watch is from file sharing. Because if I buy media I expect media and not bundled viruses, digital restrictions management or corporate surveillance.

This right here is the reason why piracy is as big and healthy as ever.

It's not about the money. Hell, we're spending thousands now whereas before it was at most a few hundreds per year. But now we can watch whatever we want without bullshit, without advertising

It's not about the ease of use. We now spent countless hours on building a libraries with everything we'd like to watch which I know will always be there

It's not about wanting to be "a criminal" or not caring about artists. Most artists get shit from Spotify, for example. We'd rather pay a few hundred per year to some foundation that will pay artists a fair share

It's about not wanting to deal with these huge anti social power monger companies and their shitty policies anymore.

You can't watch this, we won't allow it.

You can't watch that, you live in a country where it's bad for our profits if we allow you to watch that.

You can't watch this one because it's better for our profits that we dropped this so you now need to pay double for some other provider because we decided so.

We need to monitor your every move and excuuuusee me siiiirrr, i need to inspect ya aaasshole now... Please also give me all your personal information, minus the "please" because we'll just take it

You know, we're so big now, and you have so little options, we'll make you eat h add anyway even though you pay us

Fuuuuuuckkkk all of that.

Add on all the bullshit they hide in their contracts to cover liability. Fuck Disney saying that their customers can't sue them because they paid for a Disney Plus account. Should be legal but apparently it is.

My favorite part about all this DRM-lockdown that the movie industry loves so much is that gog.com makes tons of money and is successful with zero DRM. People buy games when it's convenient, they don't in general share them with 10 friends. Some people pirate, but if I don't have to deal with DRM from a first-party store, I'm not going to bother with piracy. Meanwhile, the movie industry spends millions on innovative new DRMs that make things worse. I have tried to keep up with 4K Blue Rays, but it's exhausting. Every 4k player sucks, freezes mid-movie, or refuses to play movies I paid full price for. DRM totally kills my incentive to pay studios for products.

that's why i have youtube premium. there are no ads so corporate bastards can't sway me with their propaganda

[-] weirdbeardgame@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Or just ... use uBlockOrigin

[-] alias_qr_rainmaker@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

I have ublock origin, firefox, and youtube premium

[-] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Sounds like you've already been swayed if you're just handing Google money

[-] alias_qr_rainmaker@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

"Sounds like you're already fallen into their trap because you're willingly paying money for a service provided by a large company"

[-] alias_qr_rainmaker@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago

I'm not paying google anything. I use DuckDuckGo

[-] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

to get youtube premium, you have to pay for a subscription, google owns youtube. therefore, you are paying google.

[-] alias_qr_rainmaker@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago

well that's one way of looking at it, i guess

[-] snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

I'm wondering how you're paying Google for a thing but also apparently not actually paying them for the thing... Is YouTube premium piracy a thing or something?

[-] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

am i taking crazy pills? There's literally no other way to look at it. It's a tautology, if you are paying google for youtube premium, then you're paying google.

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Eh, we still get the sponsor ads in the videos. They're skippable but still tick me off for something I pay for to still hit me up every video.

[-] 9bananas@feddit.org 4 points 2 months ago

sponsorblock solves that problem as well ;)

[-] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I Chromecast most of my YouTube and I've never gotten it to work once it's cast, but SponsorBlock is an amazing thing when I've played with it in apps.

[-] West_of_West@piefed.social 6 points 2 months ago

It's been a long time since I sailed the seas. I don't even know how the kids do it anymore.

[-] Blackmist@feddit.uk 2 points 2 months ago

Jellyfin. Radarr. Sonarr. Big HDD.

It's like Kaleidescape but for poor people.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

I’m still using:
A btguard VPN.
Transmission for the torrent client.
1337x.to to search.

I’m sure that’s not the latest, hippest setup, but it works for me.

Is that still an ok flow? Should I change anything? I’m old and set in my ways.

[-] de_lancre@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Transmission kinda meh, in my testing. I would suggest using qbittorent, unless you hate Qt.

[-] DacoTaco@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Does qbittoreent have a docker container/webui like transmission does?

[-] fleem@piefed.zeromedia.vip 2 points 2 months ago

it certainly has evolved,

i used to think i enjoyed surfing sites for the best files but it really is nicer letting the Arrs do it for you

[-] danafest@infosec.pub 1 points 2 months ago

Pretty easy to setup quality filters as long as the sites you're downloading from have releases with proper filenames to identify exactly what codec/audio/etc the release is.

[-] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 1 points 2 months ago

Browse to discover, arr's for the actual lift.

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

If you plan on building a proper pirate ship, a good place to start is https://trash-guides.info/.

Although I would highly recommend automating it with https://github.com/raydak-labs/configarr

[-] lietuva@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Stremio with torrentio and realdebrid and you get 4k streaming from all torrent sites regardless of seeders

[-] bizzle@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

What if I want to watch live sports

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Problems I will never have.

[-] plateee@piefed.social 0 points 2 months ago

I started with things like Audiogalaxy, then moved on to kazaa. Oh man, then DC++ in college. Those were the days.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

If you miss DC++, nicotine (part of Soulseek network) is still great, it's got some quirky and weird users you can avoid pretty easily but the files are good

[-] unphazed@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

It's kinda ironic that a streaming service that used piracy sites to bid on movies to add to their library is now becoming the monopoly that will push people back to piracy.

[-] Foni@piefed.zip 3 points 2 months ago

Fewer or lower quality productions also affect those of us who download the content.

[-] cRazi_man@europe.pub 1 points 2 months ago

If that happens: Don't watch shit and certainly don't pay for shit.

Even if nothing good is made for years, I guarantee there are millions of hours of undiscovered movie and series content for you to find in older releases. These companies are going to consolidate more and more, and will churn out sequels, spin offs, low effort movies, AI trash and easy cash-grabs. We need to not watch that shit and let these companies die. Pick the indie movies. Pick better quality older stuff. Wait for however long it takes for the industry to get over its unacceptable enshitification.

Games have the same problem. It is your responsibility to not pay for this micro transaction hell.

[-] scroll_responsibly@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 2 months ago

Too soon. Ellison’s Paramount is mounting a hostile takeover of Warner Brothers that may supersede this.

[-] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

Is it weird that both options are horrific and dystopian?

[-] titanicx@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

You all act like water brothers were any better at the streaming game. Hell a couple years ago they took all their content off Netflix in order to launch their own streaming service to charge more

[-] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 months ago

I don't care for streaming that much anymore, especially for movies. I rarely watch movies at home, and when I do it's my favourites on 4k bluray with Dolby atmos. Every other time it's going to the cinema usually once a week if I can. Netflix have always been shit when it comes to the cinema.

[-] P00ptart@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago

All streaming is bad. Any blip in connection drops it below 720p. Between that and data usage and data collection, why not pirate? That's even before mentioning giving money to mega-cops.

[-] CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 months ago

Shorter theatrical release times mean I can see more back catalogue in the theatres, right?

Right?

[-] Kennystillalive@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

To be honest: I'm glad Netflix got WB and Discovery is now a "free" compamy. The other option was was WB & Discovery going to Paramount... What would be bad about WB & Discovery going to Paramaount you ask? Paramount is in the hands of David Ellison, son of Berry Ellison who is a suporter of Donald Trump & his faschist ideals. Why would this be bad? Because quite a lot of important outlets such as CNN belong to Discovery. This would just give Trump & his fascho-friends more power to influence media.

[-] crusa187@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

Netflix can take their paid, ad-riddled service and piss right off with it.

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

"We're upping our subscription price because of the added value provided by or VB catalog"

[-] daggermoon@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

So, are they not going to do DVD and Blu-Ray releases for warner films? Because Netflix crap never comes to DVD.

[-] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

Netflix crap never comes to DVD.

I dunno if it's a thing exclusive to libraries or not, but at my public library I've seen some Netflix movies, and things like Stranger Things and Castlevania come through.

Not sure if those discs hit traditional media shelves or not.

[-] daggermoon@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Awww shit, I forgot about Stranger Things. I think that's the exception rather than the rule however. I could be full of shit though. I was too lazy to research. I remember The Ritual only got a DVD release in the UK (which I bought) and a Blu-ray in Brazil which I can't find a copy listed anywhere. It doesn't seem a priority for Netflix at least.
