Madani said the world’s “checking account” – surface water like rivers, lakes, and seasonal runoff – is basically being emptied.

He added that the “savings” humans inherited – groundwater, glaciers, and other long-term stores – are being drained.

The growing number of visible crises around the world, including mounting water shortages, he said, look like classic warning signs of bankruptcy.

Truly, it is easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of...you know, the thing.

Reminder that llm data centres waste dozens of gallons of potable water every minute of every day

[-] InexplicableLunchFiend@hexbear.net 3 points 12 hours ago
[-] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 2 points 2 hours ago

Every minute - it's literally one sentence, we are so cooked.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 27 points 20 hours ago

But if we don't waste millions of gallons of drinking water every day... the Chinese might do it!!

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 21 points 20 hours ago

Yeah but that’s alarmist propaganda. It’s actually the least of your concerns.

[-] Euergetes@hexbear.net 94 points 22 hours ago

will golf courses be banned? no!

will lawns be banned? no!

will the meat industry be reduced? no!

will cash crops be deprioritized? no!

will international watershed coordination increase? no!

will anyone try to protect our existing freshwater resources from pollution better? fuck no!

at a certain point these grains are going to add up and the UN climate folks will become a heap of first reformers

[-] lemming@anarchist.nexus 47 points 20 hours ago

We're gonna install cameras with facial ID at all recycling stations so we can fine those nasty wrong-doers throwing the wrong item in the wrong hole and destroying our planet!

[-] GoodGuyWithACat@hexbear.net 30 points 20 hours ago

Think of the dozens of jobs the mega server farm that processes the facial database will generate!

[-] THEPH0NECOMPANY@hexbear.net 30 points 21 hours ago

Sorry sweaty we need you to save the planets water by shutting your sink faucet off for the 5 seconds while you wash your hands.

No we won't handle data centers we need those for business, sorry you know how it is

[-] Homer_Simpson@hexbear.net 28 points 20 hours ago

Water? Like from the toilet?

[-] Carl@hexbear.net 46 points 21 hours ago

THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF WATER HAS NOT CHANGED THIS IS STRICTLY A MANAGEMENT AND DISTRIBUTION PROBLEM AHHHHHHH

[-] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 38 points 20 hours ago

A lot of aquifers have really long recharge times or are fossil aquifers, meaning that they no longer refill, so the total amount of available freshwater is probably declining.

[-] Euergetes@hexbear.net 24 points 19 hours ago

i mean this is true but it's still a management question, farmers have known for decades they were draining aquifers from heaps to grains faster than they could refill but doing anything else would effect profits

[-] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 8 points 15 hours ago

For sure, but this has been exacerbated by policy choices like the water rights system and crop subsidies.

[-] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 14 hours ago

from heaps to grains

I am never prepared

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 20 points 21 hours ago

Im pretty sure the total available water actually increases since all the melting glaciers and icecaps are adding water back into the cycle, but I don't know how much of that translates into rain in areas where it can be used

[-] daniyeg@hexbear.net 27 points 21 hours ago

i don't even care about drinking just give me some water so i can wash my ass cri

[-] Verenand@lemmygrad.ml 54 points 23 hours ago

So. Are we all just gonna die? Like by the time there is finally some fucking left movement in the world - it's already too late? What a circus

[-] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 53 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

No, not all of us. Even in the worst climate change scenarios probably not literally everyone will die. Life will get shittier and shittier, and billions of people will die.

[-] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 41 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

something we got to remember is that even if climate change kills 99% of humanity, there's still gonna be about 8 million people fighting the class war and trying to scratch out a living on a dying world

[-] porous_grey_matter@lemmy.ml 39 points 23 hours ago

Yeah, 99.9% even for 8 million.

It won’t be the end of the world but it will feel like it.

[-] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 32 points 22 hours ago

It’ll be the end of billions of “worlds” contained in their human heads, that will for sure happen.

We’ll weather it better than the global north sissies who scream about masculinity while throwing fits when they don’t have the best facilities to maintain their excessive lifestyle.

[-] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 15 points 18 hours ago

i would but then i'd be bombed and murdered, i kinda need my back to the wall where i'm gonna be dead either way (more imminently than I am now)

“Fuck conservation! We will consoom, consoom CONSOOM!”

“Wait, what do you mean when I eat up all the resources they’re gone?”

Literal 8 year old mentality. “Neener neener, I can do what I want” and we all have to pay the price.

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
