When I say normie I mean someone who doesn’t care about self-hosting doesn’t really care that much about privacy and you wouldn’t consider deep tech hobbyist.

If you did , how did you do it ? Did they stay ?

Or if someone did convert you , how did they do it ?

My whole friend group stopped trusting Meta a few years ago, so I got everyone on Matrix-Synapse instead of WhatsApp.

I just set it up on my homeserver. Everyone just calls it “Element” and has no idea how it works, but the UI is familiar and easy to use.

Trying to work on Pixelfed, but most interesting photos just get shared on Matrix anyway.

No, my wife is normieish, followed me over to Lemmy for a bit but you lot scared her off.

Now she just uses instagram and threads

Do you reckon she'd have a better time with Pixelfed and Mastodon over Lemmy? Those are more similar to Instagram and Threads, I believe.

I also use Mastodon a lot. I tried Pixelfed but 90 percent of I see are still Mastodon accounts so I just follow them on Mastodon.

The right client there makes all the difference.

Well we were both migrating away from reddit with the API culling since our app died.

[-] ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 days ago

Ahh. Still might be worth considering though, since pixelfed and mastodon have a different crowd she might jive with better.

Well she should be using Arch Linux dammit !! I am kidding totally kidding. Sorry about that

It's sad but I find there's a legit problem with sexism against women on Lemmy/Piefed. Its too often I see memes posted that are ~~precariously bordering on~~ boomer/incel humour

i see it a lot more often on piefed instances; it's like the worst of reddit got turned off by the rest of the fediversse but felt that piefed is okay somehow.

it's so bad that i had to start using the blocking feature for the first time on any of the social media platforms i've used since 1996.

it makes me wish that i could shake off my american addiction to bread-and-circuses so that i can be 100% happy with the instances that only have thought provoking content like the one i'm using to write this.

I was working temporarily at a place with a cafeteria. I was having lunch and a guy sat with me and we talked for a while. It was obvious he wasn’t brainwashed by neoliberalism or neoconservatism. I mentioned it and he said “I’m an anarchist”.

“Check out Lemmy.” He loved how it sounded. Idk. Maybe he’s here.

Also, I get that, arguably, anarchists aren’t normies, but you defined normies in a computer-literacy way and he wasn’t a techie.

I’m not a deep tech hobbyist. I just got sick of Reddit’s new algorithm. I miss the regular feed where I got to see everything I am subbed to, instead of whatever bullshit they think I should see.

Why do people use one social media site over another? He will only do it when he finds it useful.

It's not a religion. It's just a tool. Just send him something interesting on this platform. If he thinks there is anything interesting here, he will start using it on his own.

I really hate the word normie, independently of the intention it sounds elitist for being on some niche part of the internet

[-] ickplant@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Of course I know her. She’s me.

I might have? We'd never know bc they're lurkers that didn't enjoy reading Reddit anymore

[-] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

no, the ones I know all use FB. it was hard enough getting Apple users i know to use Signal for messaging.

[-] SomGye@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

"Normies" I know either don't use social media at all and do things outside, or they use Facebook exclusively

Not a federated platform but some of my friends are from the IRC era and they still come on my network. I did not have to convince them but we switched to The Lounge for the client a few years ago, so we can paste images and see url preview on the channel. Otherwise they would have insisted that I join Discord, but the small features of the "modern" IRC client was just enough to keep them coming back.

Trying to get my friends over to Stoat or Fluxer but it’s been a challenge
