Can't wait for the guide that turns my Xbox into a Steam Machine!

Because the exploit targets the boot ROM burned into silicon, Microslop can't patch it. Every Xbox One ever manufactured is vulnerable, and always will be. The hack gives complete access to everything — the Hypervisor, the operating system, the ability to run unsigned code at every privilege level. Games and firmware can be decrypted, which could open the door to emulation projects and eventual mod chips.

Xbox exclusives coming soon to SteamDeck.

Dude OG Xbox was GOAT for emulation and entertainment. Kodi got its start there, as xbmc.

I'd be so excited to have that again.

Does this apply to X|S or just Xbone?

[-] tomalley8342@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

It only applies to the 2013 model of the original Xbox One. Later Xbox Ones have more stringent checks.

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 months ago

Emulating the former is good enough for games preservation (or whatever you decide to do with the games).

Well yes, but Plex started as a port of XBMC to run on Mac os; you installed XBMC directly on the Xbox, it turned your Xbox into a streaming box.

this would be funnier, were it not so sad

Oh wait, it's sad for Microslop so it's even funnier!!!!

Amazing! Let's take a look at all the exclusives for xbox!

Are there any XBOX One games that aren't also on PC? Steam Deck can already run most of those.

I guess there's Rare Replay, but all of those game are already playable on the Steam Deck individually.

ironically, one of the xbox one games people are most interested in porting to pc is the legacy console edition of minecraft, a game famously already on pc!

tho with the recent source code leak of LCE idk if there’s still much enthusiasm

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Ah, I didn't know about the others! Slim pickins like the PS5, although that has a few that are notably pretty good.

"but but but we put Halo 5 Forge on PC that's what you gamers wanted right?"

— Microslop, probably

[-] chrash0@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

“unhackable” is a bit sensationalized here. the Xbox One is actually a security success story not because it is impossible to hack, but because it’s a rare example of a console that wasn’t hacked in its service lifetime. at the risk of giving praise to Microsoft, the architecture is actually really neat and informed the security features of subsequent Windows releases, ie a hypervisor with sandboxed sub containers (this is why they required TPMs).

(also i’m not agreeing with requiring a TPM for general purpose machines; they make sense on a bespoke hardware platform like a game console)

i bet this hack is nuts, but the blue team deserves some level of kudos

I feel like allowing users to access dev mode played a large part in this as well. Without the option surely it would have been cracked sooner.
Which is a great lesson in and of itself for tech companies willing to listen.

And that is why they NDA anyone who touches a dev kit.

[-] cheat700000007@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Dev mode should be considered as part of that success. It devalued hacking the system in the first place. It's not going to be hacked if people aren't trying.

[-] subignition@fedia.io 3 points 2 months ago

Reasonable and nuanced take, you love to see it!

[-] meco03211@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

The fuck it is! What am I gonna do with this pitchfork now?

Dont challenge people by calling something “unhackable”

[-] jqubed@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

I mean, it took almost 13 years and the product itself was discontinued six years ago

[-] yggstyle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Tools and methods used to jailbreak this generation can and will be refined and used on the next one. It should be noted that the full force of the hacking community wasn't behind this effort. The homebrew function placated a lot of people. Had microslop pulled a sony and yanked a feature or not provided that outlet: I'd imagine we'd have seen more exploits sooner.

The unhackable Switch 2!

[-] db2@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Everything is hackable if you're determined. Even an air gapped computer in a locked room.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 months ago

If it isn't hackable then it's hackable.

So depending on the specs it might be fun to get a used Xbox One and turn it into a steam machine. Better it'll be done within 2 years.

[-] rabber@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Weird, I was looking at my dusty xbox one on the shelf yesterday and I looked up if it was hackable yet. It would make such a good TV PC.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

You should look at more things and wonder if they're hackable.

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

They can start with my bank account, I could use a sudden unexplained surge of funds...

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

Aaand your crypto wallet is hacked.

[-] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

"wait why is there only 1 dogecoin in here?"

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Looks at OG Alienware Steam Machine sitting in an enclosed shelf

"Aah a ghost!"

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Microsoft probably doesn’t care at this point.
