Hey all. I'm the original creator of this graphic. Just wanted to note that the skull and bones I used is from an actual pirate flag from the 19th century. Just a fun fact.

[-] 666dollarfootlong@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

As an European, my mindset for this year has been "its amoral to not pirate American media"

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I feel the same about all media. I'm doing my part to hasten the collapse of capitalism by keeping my spending to an absolute minimum, pirating everything, buying second hand where possible, and avoiding eating out or ordering takeout as much as possible.

[-] Doll_Tow_Jet-ski@fedia.io 1 points 2 months ago

I understand everything, except the eating out. I mean, I don't do it because I don't have the money, but aren't moet restaurants and takeout places local?

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Being local doesn't magically make something good, though. Everything is local to somewhere.

My problem is with capitalism itself, not specifically American businesses or big businesses or whatever. Small business owners are a major part of the economy. If the small business owners aren't feeling the pain of capitalism too, they do not have incentive to join the rest of the working class as part of a social revolution.

How does capitalism inevitably lead to fascism?

Basically, the issue with capitalism is that the more wealth you have, the easier it is for you to make more money. And since money can be used to buy goods, services and influence, there is always a way to use money to gain more political and social power. With that political and social power, you can push society and the legal system in the direction you want to go. So you can use your wealth to gain power, and then you can use your power to change laws and society so that you can make even more wealth and power. It’s a positive feedback loop.

Obviously, though, if the billionaires and ruling class are accumulating more and more of our society’s wealth, that inevitably means that there’s less for everyone else to go around - therefore, working class people feel poorer and poorer. Meanwhile, the economy is going absolutely great for rich people, so inflation continues to go up - everything gets more expensive, but wages don’t increase. The wealthy just keep more and more of the wealth for themselves. To accumulate more and more wealth, they change the laws so that they can avoid paying taxes, so public services collapse. Politicians are lobbied to ensure that public funds are diverted away from where it is most needed - housing, healthcare, transportation, infrastructure - and instead into industries where their class interests most benefit from it, such as weapons manufacturing and extractive industries such as fossil fuels and mining.

The working class are bound to notice that their lives are getting shittier and shittier, and if that situation is left unchecked, the working class would realize that the ruling class are fucking them over, rise up, and overthrow their rulers. Obviously, the ruling class need to do something about this, but there’s no solution that the ruling class can offer. They’re causing all of the problems, to fix them they’d have to give up some of their wealth and power - and that’s not something they’re going to do. So they need to find someone else to blame the problems we have in society on. Unfortunately, though, no matter who they blame the problems on, and no matter what they do to “fix” it, the issue will continue to persist, because the material conditions underlying the issues are, very intentionally, never addressed.

So, the conundrum returns: The ruling class said that minority A caused all of the problems, minority A is persecuted and oppressed, but society doesn’t actually get any better. Either the problem wasn’t minority A, or minority A just hasn’t been oppressed enough yet. So the ruling class can either escalate the oppression, or they can shift the focus to another minority group. The division continues to escalate in terms of how vitriolic and extreme it is, and it also continues to divide the working class into smaller and smaller groups.

To get the working class to buy into this hateful message, they need to take advantage of our worst instincts, and one of those instincts is the in-group bias. The majority are manipulated into being suspicious, then intolerant, then hateful, then violent, then genocidal, towards whatever the targeted minority of the day is. Anything that can be used to divide the working class - sexuality, nationality, immigration status, ethnicity, religion, sex, gender identity, age, all of these will be used as wedges to keep the working class split apart and not working together, because they know that if the working class actually unite against them, they are completely and truly fucked.

That’s exactly how fascism manifests. It’s because it’s possible for people to accumulate power through wealth. This is why capitalism must be abolished. If we do not abolish capitalism, fascism will always return. It’s just a matter of time.

So do you grow your own food and harvest your own electricity and smelt you own ore to make your own electronic devices to post on the internet that you're accessing via your own isp?

"Small business owners" feels like an arbitrary line. Sure, there's those that are doing it because they're bootlickers and capitalists, but restaurants are terrible investments. If you're avoiding chains and conglomerates, you're more likely to be supporting a comrade who is trying to survive in a capitalist country. This is not an ACAB situation. There are employee owned small businesses and work places that treat workers fairly.

[-] phonics@lemmy.world -1 points 2 months ago

And here I am not realizing that food counts as media.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Notice the period/full stop between the words "media" and "I'm"? That denotes the end of one sentence, and the beginning of another, which is a helpful clue that those two things I wrote are seperate thoughts.

[-] phonics@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Na too late. My mind is already blown and creating a new reality where food is media. I like this new world and don't intend to leave.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Fair enough, I suppose from a certain perspective you could argue that it is - especially if you make a smiley face with breakfast food. Or get one of those toasters that makes Jesus appear on a slice of toast.

[-] phonics@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

And here I am finding out that Jesus isnt talking to other people regularily through the medium of toast.

[-] ShrimpCurler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 months ago

When I was young I pirated because I didn't have an income and couldn't pay. Now I pirate because I don't want to give any money to terrible companies.

There was a period in the middle where I didn't pirate anything, but that's beside the point.

[-] knotRyder@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

I never did stop I've been pirating things for damn near 30 years

I like to point people to privacyguides.org and fmhy.net instead. Best to prioritize open source to avoid inevitable enshittification wherever possible.

[-] Katana314@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I remember that day of the “general strike” where the simple idea was to not spend any money on big corps. I got confused, because to me, that’s a 365-day-a-year lifestyle thing for me.

Maybe I’m lucky that I don’t have lifestyle needs like pet food, baby supplies, etc, and markets have been cornered there. But there’s plenty of forms of entertainment and leisure without giving it to Disney or Amazon and the like.

[-] minorkeys@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

If only the masses had the will to fight their own subjugation.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 0 points 2 months ago

Ah, back to spreading nihilism again, I see. I'll share the same thing I said last time:

I understand how you feel, but we actually do have the power to change our world. We need to first recognize that something needs to be done, build a popular consensus, network and build connections with like-minded people, and start a real movement for change.

Electoralism has not solved our problems in the past, and it won’t do so in the future. At best, it is harm prevention, and at worst, it’s a distraction from more effective efforts. I encourage people to vote for the candidates they feel best, but to be aware that it’s not a real, long term solution. It’s always just the best of two terrible candidates, both of whom ultimately serve the ruling class.

The problems we have did not start and will not end with Trump, they are in the fundamental roots of our society, and the road to change our society is a long and difficult one, but it is a journey we have to undertake. We are going to have to act if we want to live in a better world. Simply giving in to nihlism is not an option.

[-] minorkeys@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

You have no actual plan other than a plea to "try". Funny that you criticize the nihilist's lack of trying but not the general population's. Even though both result in the same inaction. Atleast the nihilist usually once cared, unlike the masses who can't be bothered to ever care. Good luck though. Keep pleading with the wall of indifference, laziness and self-interest that keeps people from ever taking group action.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 0 points 2 months ago

I am a union rep and organizer, I have a front row seat to the movement which is building and growing every day.

Everything you say is rationalization. If change is impossible, that lets you justify your own inaction.

The indifference, laziness and self-interest you perceive is just your own reflection staring back at you.

[-] minorkeys@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

If you're a union rep and organizer then you should know better. Unions have been dying for 60 years and only came into existence because people were so poorly treated they were willing to fight, and possibly die, as some did, instead of labour. Their bargaining position was also considerably stronger, not having to compete against a world labour market or the viability of moving production to other nations.

The extremity of the situation provoked action, organizing only facilitated, it didn't provoke it. You are doing a significant amount of rationalizing on your end. Change isn't impossible, it happens all the time, but intentional change through group effort is not caused by eager organizers who just believe enough. People en masse must be provoked to action by circumstance.

There is a habitually lying, child rapist, conman and fraud, whose been granted legally immunity to violate the constitution and all laws, twice elected, and sitting in the White House, supported by the entire GOP and half the nation. People can't seem to figure out they should act to deal with that. Good ideas and wise choices don't make people act, desperation, necessity and self-interest do. Circumstances do. That's why propaganda and distractions work so well, they are the circumstances.

Nihilism and realism look the same to an optimist. That's you right now. Rationalizing away observed history to retain your will to act because you can't face a harsh truth about the disappointment and inefficacy of convincing mass behavior out of people.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 0 points 2 months ago

You have no idea what you're talking about. In the last year or so there has been a huge surge of people getting involved after realizing that shit has to change. I have heard so many stories of how people are becoming radicalized.

People are waking up, they are doing what you say they should be, while you're sitting around, doing nothing but bringing negativity, and justifying it to yourself.

Do nothing if you want, we don't need you, but keep your defeatist attitude to yourself.

[-] minorkeys@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

And why did they get active? Because things got bad enough it affected their life personally, circumstances provoked it, not their wisdom, or foresight, or morals or good ideas. Where were they while things were getting here? Change happens when circumstances provoked it, not when an organizer tries to explain why they should care and act. They aren't waking up, they're suffering. As soon as they are soothed and safe, they'll go right back to being part of problem. And if they're intimidated or frightened, they'll cower and hide, betraying the movement.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Sometimes, but not always. Many people were radicalized by Gaza, others were radicalized by Trump threatening to invade Greenland, others still by local stories and events. I know from my colleagues in the US that ICE in MN radicalized many people, too. Most of our new members actually weren't personally affected, unless you count seeing TikToks of atrocities as being affected.

Look, I understand where you're coming from, I've been in this fight since I was 17, and I know how it has felt like swimming against the tide for a long time, but I am categorically telling you that things are actually finally changing. You can be a part of it, or not, but please can you just stop trying to discourage others from doing something to help?

[-] minorkeys@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

And I'm telling you it's an illusion. It's a temporary change in behavior by a small number of people who were personally affected, either by their own emotional outrage over a circumstance or because the American Gestapo was shooting civilians in their city where they live. Once the threat is out of sight, their eagerness will fade, despite the wisdom you probably preach about vigilance and keeping up the momentum, however right you are. People don't act because of the wisdom of a distant thing, they act when they are personally affected. Masses of people acting that is necessary for real change only occurs at critical moments when mobs form. I can not give you a single example of masses of people acting when it is wise rather than when it is desperate. Can you? If you can't find those moments in history, perhaps you need to rethink your strategy for change to align with how people actually behave and not how it would beneficial for them to behave. What ever convinced you that your strategy is good? How many organizers and unions have utterly failed because people failed to stay engaged and committed? Business knows this, governments know this, they use it to break and prevent opposition all the time, they're very good at it.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I present you with my actual lived experiences and you are just like "Actually, no, despite the fact I am not involved in activist efforts, somehow I know all about them, and I am gonna tell you how to run a movement I want no part of". Brother, do you work for the CIA, or what?

[-] minorkeys@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You present me with an interpretation of reality based in your subjective experiences and it doesn't fit with my own understanding. Why should I simply believe you over others? The stories of your life are just one set amongst many, many others. Why should yours carry so much weight that it tips the scale against recorded history?

Ask yourself, when have you seen the most engagement and when have you seen the least? Why is there such a difference even if the issues are equally important?

[-] tidderuuf@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

I can't pirate no harder, a terabyte a week I'm downloading! Ive been downloaded from dawn to dusk!

[-] auntieclokwise@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Once in a while maybe you will feel the urge To break international copyright law By downloading MP3's from file sharing sites Like Morpheus or Grokster or LimeWire or KaZaA But deep in your heart you know the guilt would drive you mad And the shame would leave a permanent scar 'Cause you start out stealing songs, and then you're robbing liquor stores And selling crack and running over school kids with your car

So don't download this song The record store's where you belong Go and buy the CD like you know that you should Oh don't download this song

Oh you don't want to mess with the RIAA They'll sue you if you burn that CDR It doesn't matter if you're a grandma or a seven year old girl They'll treat you like the evil, hard bitten criminal scum you are

So don't download this song Don't go pirating music all day long Go and buy the CD like you know that you should Oh, don't download this song Don't take away money from artists just like me How else can I afford another solid gold Humvee? And diamond studded swimming pools, these things don't grow on trees So all I ask is everybody, please

Don't download this song (don't do it, no, no) Even Lars Ulrich knows it's wrong (you can just ask him) Go and buy the CD like you know that you should (you really should) Oh, don't download this song

Don't download this song (Oh please don't you do it) Or you might wind up in jail like Tommy Chong (remember Tommy) Go and buy the CD (right now) like you know that you should (go out and buy it) Oh don't download this song

Don't download this song (no no no no no no) Or you'll burn in hell before too long (and you'd deserve it) Go and buy the CD (just buy it) like you know that you should (ya cheap bastard) Oh, don't download this song

Be careful with what you are watching in the next few years. Hollywood gave itself a diverse face in the last few years. Put in black actors, had some strong women in lead roles, had some gay characters and so on. I'm afraid that we will see some movies pushing hart right MAGA topics in the next time. Movies that are pushing for traditional gender roles, have gay people as evil masterminds, immigrants as criminals and so on. We already saw that with all those movies with evil arab guys in the bush era. Hollywood was taken over by Trump's tech billionaires, you will see this turn it in the media you are watching. That will influence you and maybe you shouldn't watch such stuff

[-] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

have gay people as evil masterminds

<Looks at current tech billionaires>

Being gay doesn't stop you from being evil.

Coming soon to a movie theatre near you. And every streaming service. And as an unskipable 3hr 30min ad on Youtube. And as part of the start-up routine of Windows 12.

INT. FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE - DAY

                    JOHN RAMBO
"Cap, these woke, gay immigrants want to stop generative AI. We have to stop them."

                    BATMAN
"Rambo's right, and these disabled lesbian Democrat voters will stop at nothing. They must be detained, processed and, where necessary - which is always - terminated."

                    INDIANA JONES
"Agreed, Batman. We absolutely have to protect our billionaires' wealth and their way of life. We've got might on our side. I know Hunt, McClane, and Reacher are in and, all the way from across the pond, so is Bond. And Harry Potter. But do we have Bourne and Skywalker?"

CYBERDYNE SYSTEMS MODEL 101 [AKA THE TERMINATOR]
"Affirmative. Both have answered the call! And we have Toretto and Blade."

                    HANNIBAL LECTER
"Wait. Toretto and Blade are both... un-white."

[-] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Or you could ignore those services and watch indie stuff instead and pay for those directly

There's art out there that's worth buying. You don't have to pirate anything

Also, who cares if you don't see the latest prequel or sequel or reboot or preboot or requel by Disney? Be proudly out of the loop

If you don't watch big streamers' releases at all, you give them even less power. And if you buy indie, you give their competition power. You break the monopoly.

[-] GaMEChld@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Speaking of which, if anyone has an invite to spare for a good private tracker, please DM me. Private tracker I used since highschool has finally lost the plot.

[-] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

If you're willing to spend a bit of money to pirate, just go with usenet. I was a private tracker guy for years, but I got sick of keeping up ratio when I mainly wanted shit that wasn't super in demand. Have been so much happier since I made the move, and my downloads finish much faster than they ever did before.

[-] GaMEChld@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

This seems pretty comprehensive: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/1b2m5gd/a_detailed_guide_of_plex_for_beginners_and/

However, while LLM usage is not in vogue around here, this is one situation where I think an LLM would be very handy.

You can use something like ChatGPT to read that post and then come up with a sensible step by step procedure where you can install and configure each program once at a time.

Let's say you have a few movies and shows already downloaded.

You can get your feet wet by installing Plex Media Server, or another solution (Emby and Jellyfin are the top contenders). Then when you want to automate downloading if torrents, you get into the next step, and so on so forth.

Rarely does someone build an end game device at the beginning. Usually it's a learn as you go and upgrade as the need arises.

The most important thing in the very idea behind any of this? Get started. One step at a time. Make mistakes and learn from them.

[-] barkybeak@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 months ago

I would go to the high seas but I don’t know where to start. I used to visit the high seas often about 10 years ago. But now. Shrugs shoulders.

[-] miniinstance@lemmy.today 0 points 2 months ago

The best way to start is to visit fmhy just search it on the web. Learn and be a pirate sail the seas and keep information to yourself and not spread out your gold to the public like a true pirate

[-] Janx@piefed.social 0 points 2 months ago

keep information to yourself

Do you mean "don't share information about pirating", or "don't share the content itself"? Torrenting seems opposed to both stances...

[-] miniinstance@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Share contents but gatekeep the websites and tools as they get shutdown everytime a loud kid on the internet starts sharing it cringely
