Another thing about the PlayStation nowdays

[-] QuietCupcake@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago

That's not really the case though, is it? Most great games are on all platforms and when it comes to exclusives, isn't playstation known for having the superior selection?

Playstation is absolutely not known for having the superior selection, especially the PS5. It has very few exclusives and many of them are bad

“That was just a fart…. Right?”

That's what I love about these consoles, man.

The prices get higher but the specs stay the same.

When Microsoft announced they'd raise Xbox prices, I knew Sony wouldn't be too far behind

I remember the backlash to the PS3's price but why the fuck was it that expensive

[-] Speaker@hexbear.net 20 points 4 days ago
  1. It was basically a pilot for Cell processors, which weren't especially cheap to produce until quite late in its lifecycle
  2. Blu-Ray diodes were not cheap, either, and the format was still competing with HD-DVD. A Blu-Ray player in 2006 cost more than a PS3
  3. The original PS3 models also had an Emotion Engine onboard for backward compatibility with PS2 games, which was later replaced with much cheaper software emulation.

I think they were also too confident about their status as monopoly but you know it better

[-] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago

The console was expensive, but you saved a lot on the games because there weren't any to buy, so it evened out

PS2 $299 usd

God damn, i didn't realise the AUD was that trash compared to the USD and Yen at the time. I swear the PS2 was selling for like $1000 here at launch.
google tells me RRP was $750 but i know that people were paying more

[-] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Not surprised it was going for more, there were shortages.

[-] AernaLingus@hexbear.net 4 points 4 days ago

Holy fuck, I haven't thought about MegaTokyo in a hot minute.

That's what happens when one or more core components 5x in price (ram, but others aren't far behind).
