The U.S. practices cultural imperialism; without the tax Canadian media production would be at an inherent disadvantage, as platforms like Netflix would simply treat it as an extension of the U.S. market to the detriment of content featuring Canadian perspectives.

Haven't touched a streaming service outside of Deezer for music in about a year now, but everything that pisses of the US is worth it. Want to show your shit in our country? Pay for the privilege.

But also Netflix is actual shit now so the subscription isnt actually worth the constantly rising prices.

I say everyone in Canada should cancel Netflix! If there is a Netflix show they want to watch there is always the seven seas.

I cancelled when my mom couldn't use my account anymore. We live 5 blocks apart and she's on a fixed income. I had an account from the early 2000s, when they were mailing DVDs to you, and they lost me when they got greedy. Now I just sail the seven seas. Everyone should cancel, especially since they're raising prices again.

I don't really get his position on this issue.

"This notion that somehow we've got these large U.S. companies that don't contribute has just never been factual. The reality is these companies have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on film and television production in Canada," Geist said.

Geist said he's comfortable with regulations around discoverability, ensuring platforms better promote Canadian content, but ultimately he'd like to see the free market operate like a free market.

I think that woefully underestimates the effects of American dominance in the entertainment landscape, and would only serve to ensure that Canada becomes even more of a place for Hollywood to outsource their own productions, while stifling home-grown content.

According to the Canada Media Fund's website, an applicant (generally the producer) must be Canadian "and have full creative and financial control over all aspects of the project, from development through production and exploitation."

I think that CBC is doing shit journalism now and they cherry picked what they need from his argument.

However it’s really seems like dumb take and don’t align with what we have seen of him
