The threadiverse is small (compared to other major platforms) and I often see usernames that I recognize. How well do we notice each other around here?

I'll start... my name's "MrShankles" and I do be commenting/posting from time to time

I feel like I recognise maybe 80% of the posters I see...

[-] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 3 weeks ago

I always recognize my admin. *waves

[-] zikzak025@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

There's a 4/5 chance that Ada notices me?? 😯

[-] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 weeks ago

I tend to recognize usernames I see at least once a day, if they're phrases or words. Not if they're like strings of random characters...

[-] Today@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago

What happened to flying squid? They had some health problems and then talked about moving and then disappeared.

[-] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I think this place wasn't too healthy for them mentally, and I'm fairly certain after moving they just bowed out of coming back and focused on rebuilding their life in a new country, or at least I hope they did. Lemmy also skews heavily US American (less so than reddit but still largely) and so maybe they just wanted to disconnect from things here in the USA. If I was in a new place I think I'd spend more time trying to get my bearings locally than reading endless news about the place I just left.

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

If you check in lemvotes you can see some activity from time to time, so I don't think they are dead. It could be a federation issue but they at least appear to have logged in and had some vote activities in December.

Regardless they did not have a healthy relationship with Lemmy. They were averaging something on the order of 15 comments, per hour, per day. That's a comment every 4 minutes, all day, every day, for years.

Idk. We should still probably build something to remember them by. Or to piss on, depending on how you viewed them. They were very political and were doing a lot of "pre blaming" for the, at the time, election which hadn't happened yet. I think it may have broken them.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

I think it may have broken them.

sure as fuck broke me.

whatever hope I had left in humanity putrefied.

[-] Today@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

They spent a lot of time traveling and waiting for medical tests and results with their mom. I attributed the activity to the stress and excess time on their hands.

@flyingsquid@lemmy.world

Last I saw, moved to the UK, was looking at getting a job there, and I assume stopped using the Threadiverse to dedicate more time to real life. Doesn't look like he's been commenting in a year:

https://lemmy.world/post/25764717/15184325

I told a member of an LGBT organization in York, UK that I would be happy for any help I can get regarding finding me a job above the UK family visa income threshold so my gay daughter can stay here longer than six months after he offered to look over my CV and give me pointers… for the glory of the empire?

Flying Squid was an auto-block for me, as soon as I made my account. He always used to ban me because he couldn't win arguments with me in the comments.

Edit to spill the tea:

Hello Lemmy.world admin team, I am writing to complain about the conduct of the moderator FlyingSquid.

On two occasions I have had negative interactions with FlyingSquid on the /world community, both times he has used, or threatened to use, his moderator powers against me, because of his personal disagreements with me.

I am happy to refer you to both conversations:

link 1

In this conversation, we had a long conversation about laws and politics. Personally, I feel he acted in bad faith on several occasions throughout our conversation, in my opinion, he was trying to bait me into getting upset so he could righteously ban me.

And your silly prediction is wrong. I am not going to ban you for this despite the incivility rule violation. I am just going to stop talking to you.

But you have just earned yourself the eye of a moderator who will not tolerate your rule-breaking with anyone else. Including if I see any in your recent history.

More recently, we had a conversation today:

link 2

Again, in this conversation, he was, in my opinion, highly rude, dismissive and arguing in bad faith. He even admitted as much. I said I wasn’t interested in talking with him, he continued to push me for an answer, and then said:

You didn’t let me down, because I knew you didn’t actually have an answer

I completely understand that sometimes people get heated or struggle to deal with arguments where they care about the topic, so I am totally willing to look past that. However, I am not willing to look past his abuse of power.

What a bullshit cop-out. I have asked you multiple times what the next step is and you're now claiming I'm not interested?

That's two lies you've told about me now. That is coming close to trolling. This is seemingly a pattern for FlyingSquid - goading people he disagrees with into becoming frustrated with his bad-faith arguments, then accusing them of “trolling” when the people he experiences push-back, and using that as an excuse to ban someone he disagrees with.

I was writing a response to his post pointing out that he was arguing in bad faith when I accidentally submitted it half-way through, when he suspended me for “trolling”.

I do not believe that he has the disposition to be a moderator if he gets so upset at a polite discussion that he feels compelled to use moderator powers to silence dissent. I go out of my way to be as polite, kind and compassionate as possible and to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I do not believe we should allow those in a position of trust or power to use that to settle their personal disputes. I know there has been some issues with that recently regarding the vegan community so I am hopeful that you will do the right thing and either remove his moderator powers or at the very least let him know that his abuse of powers is not tolerated.

I would prefer not to make a community spectacle out of this, hence the email.

Thanks and all the best,

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, squid did deep and lasting damage to the fediverse with how they used bans to editorialize communities and those scars remain implicit today.

At the same time they were a prolific and dedicated poster and that's huge in a small community like ours. I didn't like them, at all, and I think they had some deep problems around politics, identity, and some very weird narcissistic tendencies and victims complex. But I think they were also an important member of the community, if one who shouldn't have played the role of moderator.

[-] FaceDeer@fedia.io 7 points 3 weeks ago

There's a guy who thinks I'm some kind of troll or bot and tries to "call me out" by name every once in a while, I suppose that counts.

Personally, I try not to pay close attention to usernames - I want to engage with what's said, not form opinions about the people saying it.

Way too soon to notice specific people. I suck at focusing on/distinguishing people. They all melt together into one homogeneous background mass, in online world and in real life.

It takes repeated exposure in the same environment under same conditions for me to start noticing them and even then there's no guarantee that outside said training environment i notice them.

[-] ArgentRaven@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

We used to see a MargotRobbie but they stopped. Dunno why. They committed to the bit, though.

[-] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 3 weeks ago

MargotRobbie

Fully-qualified username: @MargotRobbie@lemmy.world

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 6 points 3 weeks ago

There are a few names I informally had good vibes for. I started using tagging to keep track of folks a bit. This especially helped with the opposite because blocking someone who is grossely bad is an easy decision but I like to give the benefit of the doubt. Now I can tag. It kinda gives me this this I wanted from trust cafe where you can rate verything but instead I tag it.

[-] bearboiblake@pawb.social 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

This is gonna sound really terrible, but... I generally don't recognize people by name so much... maybe something dyslexia related? I think there are a couple of rare exceptions, like the user with two letters and then four numbers in their name.

I recognize lots of avatars, as I scroll around, but I don't generally register the names or even descriptions of the images, just kind of like... my brain just remembers purplish-blob shape, red glowy circle, monochromatic goblet.

Oh, and dancing banana, and blue name furry. I actually remember his, it's Kolanki I think

All of you users with no avatar, go get one so I remember you all please! It's an accessability aid in a way :p

[-] HotsauceHurricane@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I too am an avatar fan.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Huh. I never remember they're an option on lemmy because they don't show on Boost, but that's a really good point for accessibility. Thanks for pointing it out!

[-] Reyali@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Wait, Lemmy has avatars? I use an app 99% of the time, and the app doesn’t have them so I never realized that was a thing, lol. Whoops.

"He's just this guy, you know?"

[-] Hegar@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

That whole bit is SO GOOD. Everything from bang the rocks together, worst dressed sentient being, best bang since the big one, culminating in Zaphod's jist zis guy, you know? 😂

It's right up there with the 'space, it says, is big' and might even be better than the bit about the marketing division of the sirius cybernetics corporation.

[-] EggInDisguise@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 weeks ago

I thought I posted too much on my alt on another instance.

Glad I don't see the username here, cause at least that means I wasn't super annoying lmao

I think everyone here has already posted all the names I usually see.

There's also stamets, though I haven't seen them active in places I visit in awhile. Also a few users with custom names like Admiral Patrick or Riker Maneuver.

I recognize the people who post their art. There are a few people in particular who I especially like seeing what they've made.

[-] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 3 points 3 weeks ago

When I start recognizing a username it's usually because that person is about to get blocked. Applies to quite many users mentioned here too.

I think the small size of the platform is a bit of an issue in this case. The only way to not get "famous" here is by constantly having to make new accounts.

[-] Asafum@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

There are quite a few names I recognize from post activity or unique characters in their name and then there are some that I recognize by their comments like one user I think their name is BigMacHole, I'll read a comment and know it's them before even checking the username because of the way they write their comments.

I’m not a big poster. Across 3 accounts (RIP lemm.ee) I have less than five total. I do comment a lot in various communities.

Flyingsquid was a big one and other people mentioned him.

Lately, it's Victoria08. There is someone with a disgusting name that I won’t type out, let’s just call him Satan… Deceptichum?

I remember some Star Trek community fractured and the two people that did all of the memes there split but for some reason I can’t remember their names. Probably Miles or something.

I try to keep in mind the names of those that I regularly interact with, and even try to pay attention to who my regular lurkers are. While I mainly just interact with people replying to my posts, I lurk a ton myself, but there I think I'm more familiar with the names of the people I am not the biggest fan of, since I don't usually block anyone.

So far in this thread, I feel familiar with:

ada, JetpackJackson, nemo, SnotFlickerman, and I've seen a number of things from my bearboiblake recently

I went on whatever that Fediverse stat tool page is today and was able to predict most of my top ten people I comment with.

I enjoy the relatively small size of the Fediverse, and I like that I get to become familiar with so many of you.

I recognize kolanki (I doubt I'm spelling it correctly, but the person with the large blue name), pugjesus, the picard maneuver, violet08, that fucking cm0002 with the 5,000 alt accounts, and that's about it.

(Kolanaki has a canine fursona.)

I changed it recently. Still kind of a canine, but it is technically a Poon from Atlyss, though the race customizations have dog-like parts I used.

[-] AlbynRailroad@fedinsfw.app 2 points 3 weeks ago

He is posting. I'm literally in one of MrShankles posts Right Now! Crazy.

[-] Triumph@fedia.io 2 points 3 weeks ago

Nobody really knows me.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I am always right.

I am also an asshole.

1000002121

mostly just to make people stop and take a position other than what they normally do so they can experience something new.

[-] popekingjoe@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I've been recognized in a hentai community or two. 😆

And I certainly recognize a lot of names mentioned ITT.

[-] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I could recognise a violet or PugJesus post without nametags! I enjoy both posters' content although violet's is a bit concerning and less educational, lol. Oh, and the guy who only posts anti-Western narratives memes, he always gets downvoted but he keeps at it like Marx's strongest soldier 😅. There was also this maniac called Satan'sSomethingSomething I just had to block on two different accounts. Finally, there are several posters I have personally tagged cause I regularly see eye to eye with them, or at least I consider reasonable, prosocial and capable of having a normal conversation (flaxvert, Maeve, VikingHippie, among others). 👍
