I always get suspicious when the headline says something along "scientist says you should". Because typical scientistic statements are more conditional: "If you do A, B might happen", or even "B becomes more likely".
Checking the actual quote:

"I think it would be nice if your meal came with a side salad and six French fries, [...]"

Yeah, really good reporting...

Who says you only need to eat one serving though?

[-] leftascenter@jlai.lu 1 points 1 hour ago

What size for the cuts?

[-] pheelicks@lemmy.zip 18 points 3 hours ago

Yeah, if we could stop ridiculing sience by parroting (and probably misrepresenting) stuff like this, that would be great...

When I see those headlines I don't wonder anymore why some people dont take science as a whole seriously.

If i ordered one fries i get this:

Which mean i can eat up to 6 of these per serving. Make sense.

[-] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 6 points 3 hours ago

You ordered the "Party Size," obviously.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 3 hours ago

I can still eat as many chips as I want though, right?

i always try to follow this but the restaurants keep screwing me over

i ask for six fries and they give me hundreds of the damn things

[-] Elgenzay@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 hours ago

Assuming the downvotes are from people missing the joke?

The joke is that by asking for 6 fries, they're inadvertently making 6 orders of fries

[-] laz@pawb.social 1 points 46 minutes ago

Mine comes from the posting of a censored meme. I'll downvote everyone of them I see. I'm so god damned fed up with the corpo-sanitised internet.

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 12 points 5 hours ago

Ok, but they don't say how many servings I should eat, so... 100 servings it is.

[-] brem@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

100 servings of fries

Heckuva way to die

What's the hyperbole? The guy sounded pretty serious

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Amid the French fry furore, Rimm has since clarified that he was merely suggesting restaurants offer smaller plates of fries.

Smaller, not literally 6 small fries.

Targeting number of fries instead of weight would also be unscientific, 6 needle thickness and 6 quarter edges fries are not equivalent.

[-] AwesomeLowlander@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

Exercise portion control

How many fries you eat matters more than things like the fries’ surface area or the type of oil used in making them, Lindsay Moyer, a senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said.

Consider, for instance, that a large serving of McDonald’s fries is 510 calories, nearly the same as a Big Mac (540 calories), she said. The Agriculture Department lists a serving of fries as three ounces, which amounts to 12 to 15 individual potato sticks, or about 140 calories. Split your order, get the smallest portion possible or substitute with a side salad or some kind of green vegetable, Ms. Moyer said, or get a baked white or sweet potato instead. “There aren’t a lot of people who are sending back three-quarters of an order of French fries,” Dr. Rimm said. “I think it would be nice if your meal came with a side salad and six French fries.”

Here's the original article with context. The folks were absolutely serious about what they were saying up until the Internet blew up on them

[-] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 1 points 2 hours ago

McDonald's salads have more calories than their burgers though.

[-] rhubarbe@tarte.nuage-libre.fr 1 points 59 minutes ago

I've just checked here in France. One BicMac contains 530 kcal while a caesar salad contains 402 kcal. A Royal Cheese also contains 525 kcal. Maybe it's different in your country but here there is a pattern where salad have less calories than burgers.

[-] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 2 points 3 hours ago

He wasn't - he was deliberately saying something attention-grabbing so people would realize how unhealthy the typical restaurant fries are made. He knows a serving of six fries is unrealistic.

Of course, people are too closed-minded and insecure to be that honest with themselves about the facts they don't want to hear — preferring instead to attack and ridicule others so they can overcompensate for their well-buried guilt over wanting to eat something they deep down know is very bad for them.

[-] mycodesucks@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

43 servings per meal is standard.

[-] danekrae@lemmy.world 6 points 5 hours ago

I think the last restaurant I visited had read this article...

[-] BucketBong@p.hobo.social -1 points 3 hours ago

SIX! I shove more than that into my mouth in one go, fucking six.... Oooo look at Mr 6 chips over there, he's sooooo good at portioning his food, god I want to fuck him...... Said nobody.

Fries contain vitamin A and your body needs carbs and fat. Also, fed is best. Shut up, professor.
