Got this email this morning from GOG. Choosing this as the subject line was certainly a decision.

A reddit account claiming to be the creators of the game has been posting this response:

Dev Response

WE ARE THE CREATORS OF THE GAME. Hello guys!

1. FIRST OF ALL - WE HAVE 0 INSPIRATION OR CONNECTIONS TO NEO-NAZIS (To be honest, for a long time we didn't even know that there could be a problem with that when making a fantasy game about Slavic culture).

We are the creators of the game. We are a couple from Poland. (Our YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCONlF1_qr8ekpHezov03Rww). We want to underline that our game and we ourselves have 0 connotations with any neo-Nazis or the Nazi community. It is a fantasy game placed in a Slavic fantasy universe. Yes, we are using the "kolovrat" symbol in the game, but we explain it as a symbol of the "God of the Sun" or "Sun". In the game, we even explain that some ancient symbols were adapted by the Nazis. Our kolovrat symbol was based on historical sources of ancient statues:https://sagy.vikingove.cz/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/kolovrat-recko.jpg. (Yes we are now aware it was greek statues, but overall it was symbol of the sun and it is historically confirmed) (Sun is very important for our game storytelling)

But still, some time ago we decided to change the logo symbol to a "roseta", which is also a sun symbol but doesn't have the connotations that we weren't aware of earlier. (Also, some reviewers didn't want to review the game because of that, and basically, we started to be aware of the problem at that time. Because of that small mistake it was much harder to do marketing, and the game was our 8 years of work . Worst thing was that no one before release of the game never mentioned that to us. So Finally we changed all logos (trust us it was very hard in so many places, reviews etc. and we decided to open new chapter. You could read about it here. (we spend like a few months trying to unravel many things to be clear: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/912840/view/528750685224699129 ) ).

In the game itself, the logo is waiting for an update (it is already updated on the PS5 version). The game is about Slavic culture. Unfortunately, so many Slavic (and also, as you know, Norse) symbols were adapted by the Nazis, that during production we overlooked that the kolovrat was also used by smaller groups in Russia. So basically, we are the opposite of any Nazi ideology, and our game is also the opposite. Basically, it is a love story medieval thriller. After you play it or read most of the reviews, you will see that it is a family/human story.

2. WE DON'T KNOW WHY GOG USED SYMBOLS IN THEIR NEWSLETTER Really, we were also totally surprised when we saw the logo in the newsletter (the old logo) and the symbols next to the newsletter title. But we are in contact with GOG, and we believe this was like an AI recommendation to use those symbols, or something like that. We will ask GOG to just clarify things in the next newsletter.

We didn't use any SS or "Nazi swastika" in the game. Let's wait for GOG's clarification, but in our opinion, it was a bad AI recommendation. (Also, we think the first 2 symbols are just what someone writing the newsletter saw as a "Sun" symbol, as it doesn't look like a black sun, etc. AI recommendations can be really stupid in the matter of symbols.)

Best Regards

They really should have just doubled down and said it was in support of Ukraine

[-] Egonallanon@feddit.uk 48 points 1 day ago

They just commented on the Reddit post abiut this and it's a pretty weak excuse. Downright stupid one in my opinion.

The Sowilo rune is part of my culture [...] as a Pole

NO IT FUCKING ISN'T YOU LYING NAZI FUCK. It's an invented rune based on the S rune from the younger futhark, a system that existed In Scandinavia. There are four kinds of younger futhark and none of them are Polish, there are zero futhark runestones in Poland.

It's a cryptonazi dogwhistle. That theory did existed in historiography but was debunked long ago, and every few years some hack surfaces with some stupid book about Poles are totally Aryans i swear and dudes with comic book nordic tattoos come out of woodwork to the internet.

Ah yes, let's put double sun runes for uh no reason. Also hmm this looks like an SS logo we should not send it to Germany but everywhere else is fine. Yes, that is a sensible thing to do after noticing that you have written something that looks exactly like an SS logo.

"We knew it was a problem (which is why we didn't send it to the country that has laws against it), but we still sent it anyway" is maybe the stupidest way to approach this lmao

[-] KoboldKomrade@hexbear.net 33 points 1 day ago

A redditor said they subbed to the email in English, so they got the email in Germany. They were just checking language (which is semi-reasonable from a "do this quick" logic). But is a really funny way to do compliance.

"Yeah this might be illegal in X country, just check if that country's language is used and comply with the bare minimum. Surely no one outside the country speaks that language, or someone inside speaks another language."

[-] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

That's even worse

[-] christian@hexbear.net 28 points 1 day ago

I don't know if there are other companies I could say this for but the idea of GOG self-immolating actually upsets me, will someone there please fire up an apology letter draft and say this guy has been disciplined and had his keys taken away? Their installers are consistently the best choices for game piracy as a linux user.

[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago

We're gonna have to denazify GOG how-compelling

Oh I didn't, they just don't display properly for me (hence the symbols next to the lightning bolts)

[-] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 10 points 1 day ago

I know, I just wanted to have others see the combination

[-] chortle_tortle@mander.xyz 16 points 1 day ago

Can you explain why it was decided to double the Sowilo rune?

Bad mistake only, no one knows why. The intention was to make a sun rune and nothing more.

Oh my god, the 3rd reply to the post about this on gog's forums tried to post the title and couldn't. So they either blocked some/all unicode (probably a smart/good idea), or already were blocking it (for being nazi or to head off people calling them out). Either way, extremely funny.

To add to it, 4 days ago they released fucking hatred (the edgy spree shooter game with ties to reactionairies). https://www.gog.com/en/news/release_hatred_with_additions_to_the_gog_preservation_program (Title sounds like one of the "RELEASE THIS GAME PLS!!" things but also has a link to the store in there.)

Really cool things going on at gog.

I mean you can't expect anything better from a company from Poland to be honest.

[-] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there's a huge NSBM scene over there

The ones who hangout in drama/political threads on gaming sites are 90% fascists, yeah.

[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I don't play on the German team on Hell Let Loose partly because of how many people I see with actual nazi user names and avatars. But there are a lot of commies too, the nazis are just always loud and open about it so it's hard to say if they are actually that large of a portion of all gamers, but significant enough.

[-] Demifriend@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I had gotten the email but without the symbols this morning so I thought this was a poor taste shit post at first, what the fuck

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 53 points 1 day ago

[-] RondoRevolution@hexbear.net 17 points 1 day ago

I also got this fucking email, what the actual fuck

[-] gingerbrat@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

I got the mail too, and at least in the German version, there were no symbols

[-] chortle_tortle@mander.xyz 43 points 1 day ago

From their comment on reddit.

I also recognize that placing two such runes next to each other could create an unfortunate association with symbols used by the Nazi regime. This was noticed before distribution, and out of respect for local sensitivities, the material was not sent to the German community.

To which someone replied,

So you caught this as potentially troubling and sensitive before it was sent out to everyone, so you decided not to send it to just one country—Germany, where it's more likely your company could be held legally liable?

They knew it was nazi shit and didn't send it to Germany because they could face legal trouble.

[-] gingerbrat@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago

Thanks for the info! You can't make that shit up, holy shit

[-] egg1918@hexbear.net 20 points 1 day ago

I wonder if that German guy that was subscribed in English could file a complaint or something

[-] culpritus@hexbear.net 25 points 1 day ago

Fallout? That's pretty funny.

Ah yes, Fallout. The post-apocalyptic game known for its ironic takes on slavic culture and vast open worlds set around famous Russian cities.

[-] RION@hexbear.net 23 points 1 day ago

There's the Bobrov bros in Diamond City! And uh, that ship full of Norwegian ghouls, which are kinds Slavic if you squint, like, a lot

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 16 points 1 day ago

The old Fallout games are apparently super popular in eastern europe, with the biggest modding scene in Russia.

[-] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 day ago

That's the header of the e-mail with the gog logo in the center, the actual content of the e-mail is a game called The End of The Sun with an old logo that has a rune that nazis loves.

[-] culpritus@hexbear.net 5 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

The End of The Sun

https://www.gog.com/en/game/the_end_of_the_sun

Looking at the screenshot gallery I saw at least 3-4 black sun symbols along with a few other questionable ones. Wonder who funded and made this.
