Image is of the Herðubreið tuya in northeast Iceland, formed when ice sheets covered Iceland thousands of years ago. It's not really relevant to the Grindavik situation but I think they look neat. The title also doesn't make much sense but I saw the pun and took it.

Off in Iceland, different kinds of tunnels are causing problems. Underneath the town of Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, not far from the capital of Reykjavik, tens of thousands of earthquakes are portending the movement of magma in tunnels underneath the peninsula, which could breach the surface and cause an eruption. The 4000 residents of the town have been evacuated as the magma has risen to less than a kilometer below the surface.^TRG^

Icelandic volcanism is pretty fascinating, with the country sitting on the mid-Atlantic ridge, the birthing line of new oceanic crustal rock running right down the Atlantic ocean for many thousands of kilometers, as well as a hotspot, an upwelling of mantle material of debated origin which also feeds otherwise-inexplicable volcanism in the middle of tectonic plates, like Yellowstone and Hawaii.

An additional factor here is the presence of glaciers. When a volcano erupts underneath a glacier, the melting water cools the lava rapidly, causing features usually seen in volcanoes that erupt under the sea like pillow basalts, but also unique features like tuyas, which are steep-sided but flat-topped volcanoes. The rapid melting of water can also cause glacial floods called jökulhlaups.

Icelandic volcanoes have had significant regional and even global impacts in the past. In 2010, the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which was a volcano covered by an ice cap, erupted and the ash cloud spread across Europe, causing airline disruption for about a month which caused nearly $2 billion in total losses for airline companies - though this seems pretty quaint compared to the pandemic's impact on airlines in retrospect. Back in the 1780s, the Laki volcano killed a quarter of the Icelandic population due to sulphur dioxide causing massive crop failure and cattle death. This eruption's impacts spread to Europe and beyond, causing notable worldwide temperature drops and thus crop failures and may well have been a contributing factor to the outbreak of the French Revolution, which obviously heralded the death of the feudal order and the eventual primacy of capitalism in its place. That being said, any eruption at Grindavik is very probably not going to have any significant worldwide impacts - there are over a hundred volcanoes already in Iceland, and regular climate change is doing a great job at causing mayhem right now anyway. It's also still possible that there won't be an eruption at all, at least not in the short to medium term.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

The director of the WHO

Today @WHO led a very high risk @UN assessment mission to Al-Shifa hospital in #Gaza. The team saw a hospital no longer able to function: no water, no food, no electricity, no fuel, medical supplies depleted. Given this deplorable situation and the condition of many patients, including babies, health workers requested support to evacuate patients who cannot receive lifesaving care there anymore.

We are working with partners to develop an urgent evacuation plan and ask for full facilitation of this plan. We continue to call for protection of health and of civilians. The current situation is unbearable and unjustifiable.

Ceasefire. NOW.

IDF claims to have found an AK-47 behind an MRI scanner

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/11/15/israel-gaza-latest-news-updates-hamas-palestine-day-40-live/

I don't know about you, but anywhere remotely in the vicinity of an MRI scanner is the absolute last place I would put a gun. Those things can rip earrings off your head.

Did some searching and found an instance of a cop who didn't take an MRI seriously:

https://www.ajronline.org/doi/full/10.2214/ajr.178.5.1781092

Once the officer was inside the MR suite, the gun was pulled from his hand as he attempted to place the gun on top of a cabinet 3 ft (0.9 m) away from the magnet bore. The gun was immediately pulled into the bore, where it struck the left side and spontaneously discharged a round into the wall of the room at the rear of the magnet. Fortunately, no one was injured. Although the gun struck the magnet bore, only minimal cosmetic damage occurred to the magnet itself. The MR unit had full functional capability immediately after the gun discharged. The weapon's thumb safety was reportedly engaged when the gun discharged.

Xi Jinping and Biden will meet at the Filoli residence, where the filming of the series "Dynasty", the comedy film "George of the Jungle", the thriller "The Game" by David Fincher, the comedy drama "Heaven Can Wait" by Warren Beatty and Buck Henry took place

The main house of the residence has 56 rooms, and the area of the estate is about 5 thousand square meters, including a Georgian mansion and an English Renaissance garden.

Filoli was built between 1915 and 1917 for William Bowers Bourne II, owner of one of California's richest gold mines and president of the Spring Valley Water Company, which supplied water to San Francisco, and his wife Agnes Moody Bourne.

The estate's name is an acronym formed by combining the first two letters of the keywords of William Bourne's creed: "Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

In 1975, the estate was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation with an endowment that helps defray annual operating expenses. The estate operates as the Filoli Center, a private non-profit organization with its own Board of Governors, staff and volunteers.

Observers note that it is a quiet, secluded estate where Biden and Xi can hold conversations in a relaxed atmosphere different from the APEC summit.

It is interesting that the Filoli estate was essentially built with money from the largest gold mine in California - the Empire mine, where hundreds and thousands of Chinese, taken as guest workers or simply fleeing the country before, worked and died for pennies for the good of America.

The collapse of the Qing Empire - it is because of the gold mines of San Francisco that in Chinese it is called Jiu Jinshan 旧金山 - Old Gold Mountains.

Biden’s China experts did not disappoint—the hint to Xi Jinping was not at all subtle.

Israel Kills Children and Women as Preferred Victims: Lula

So far, Israeli forces have killed 11,180 Gazans, including 4,609 children and 3,100 women.

On Monday, Brazilian President Lula da Silva accused the Israeli government of killing innocent civilians "without any criteria" in the Gaza Strip.

While Lula condemned the actions that Hamas took against Israeli civilians on Oct. 7, he emphasized that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's response has been "just as serious" given that the Israeli bombings have left over 11,100 Palestinians killed so far.

"I had never heard of news about children as preferential victims of a war. They throw bombs where there are children and where there are hospitals with the pretext that a terrorist is there," Lula said as Israel is militarily surrounding one of the main medical centers in Gaza.

In the fifth week of Israeli attacks on Gaza, the Palestinian health authorities updated the death toll to 11,180 people, including 4,609 children and 3,100 women.

Previously, UN agencies reported that 1.5 million Gazans have been forced to abandon their homes since October 7, when the Israeli forces began their offensive against the Palestinians.

On Sunday, 32 Brazilians and their families were able to leave Gaza on a military plane heading to Cairo. This happened after weeks of negotiations with Egypt and Israel, Lula confirmed, adding that the evacuation was achieved with "a lot of sacrifice."

The Brazilian president will receive his compatriots on Monday night in Brazilia, where the evacuees will receive psychological and medical support.

Lula promised to repatriate all those Brazilians who wish to voluntarily leave Israel and Palestine. Since Oct. 7, his administration has achieved the repatriation of 1,477 people.

I dream of a future where everyone can only treat a Westerner's opinion with pity and contempt.

US emissions are significantly underreported due to the rapid expansion of natural gas. Accounting for this leakage (fugitive emissions) could mean that US emissions are actually increasing YoY.

A study into American emissions from the natural gas industry. US natural gas consumption is rising at a terrifying rate to offset coal, but the environmental benefits of natural gas over coal are less tangible. Methane gas (CH4) is incredibly easy to leak and incredibly hard to deal with. In terms of CO2e, it is about 85x as potent over a 20-year period and 30x as potent over a 100-year period. Combustion of natural gas itself is estimated to release half the GHG of coal. So, what does that mean? Over a 20-year period, a leakage rate of 1.2% would put natural gas at GHG parity to coal. Over a 100-year period, that leakage rate goes up to about 3.3%. This is challenging because methane leaks everywhere: at extraction, during transportation, during processing, and at home... there is estimated to be a methane leak every 2 kilometers of pipeline.

So, how much methane leaks? The real answer is that we simply don't know. Previous EPA estimates vary widely, but it's widely accepted that we are undercounting it. Today, the EPA estimates leakage makes up 1.4% of total natural gas production. Researchers at Stanford estimate it to be about 9% over the Permian Basin. Researchers from Duke estimate that aggregate methane emissions from natural gas are 70% higher than EPA estimates. NOAA puts estimates of methane leakage over cities to be more than twice the EPA estimates. The Environmental Defense Fund estimates US methane leakage to be around 2.3%. The Atmospheric Fund estimates Canadian methane leakage to be around 2.7%. In fact, even the Congressional Research Service acknowledges that "the life-cycle GHG emissions of both existing and advanced natural-gas-fired technology may be comparable to coal-fired technology in the short term and could remain within range of coal-fired technology for several decades after emissions."

These numbers are terrifying. Over a 20-year period, we are absolutely fucked. Even using EPA numbers, the additional natural gas we burn today will have a greater impact on our climate in 2045 than if we had burned coal. So, let's take a look at

Figure 1: US energy production numbers Figure 1: US energy production numbers

Total fossil fuel consumption is increasing. Coal is being replaced with natural gas, but total fossil fuel consumption is by no means contracting. Let's compare that with what the EPA reports for

Figure 2: US GHG emissions by sector Figure 2: US GHG emissions by sector

The EPA claims most GHG emissions reductions to be due to the electric power industry, which is reliant on switching from coal to natural gas. This is the key claim that the US uses to justify their aggregate GHGe reduction... but over what time frame? Over twenty years, we're at parity with coal even under the most optimistic estimates. Over a hundred years, we're at parity with coal under the leakage rate reported by most academic studies. Where is this GHGe reduction coming from and what time frame is it over? ****

Now that you all are coming around to recognizing Ansarallah it's time to learn about their land reform policies and agrarian revolution.

Yemen under the Ansarallah is a country where the power and wealth of landowners are actively diminished in an almost Marxist-adjacent fashion. In May of 2022, the third phase of the agricultural revolution was initiated by the Higher Agricultural Committee, which resulted in the expropriation of farmland across the entire country. In Yemen’s western Tihama region, 104 thousand hectares of land was expropriated for farming. And while this is just one example of Ansarallah’s economic plan, the same story is unfolding in regions such as Dhamar, Saadah, and elsewhere.

The agrarian revolution has also led to a revival of Yemen’s 600-year-old coffee culture. “The Coffee Revolution” is an initiative directly linked to the wider agrarian renaissance that aims to boost coffee cultivation through proper education of farmers and general oversight of farms and markets. A stimulant such as Qat, native to Yemen for decades, is slowly being phased out and replaced with coffee crops. An announcement was made back in February of 2022 by the Governor of Saadah Muhammad Jaber Awad and Shura Council member Abdullah Al-Qasimi, that all qat trees are to be replaced with coffee and almonds, a project that is still actively ongoing today.

On Qat specifically, Zaid Ali Basha within his research argues that the stimulant grew across Yemen’s population much in favor of Saleh’s kleptocratic dictatorship and what he calls “qatlords”, the landlords reaping profits from Qat cultivation. Qat usage and misusage were not mitigated because they created a “politically disengaged citizenry” that had surrendered to the state. An opioid for the masses if there ever was one. So long as the people were “happy” due to an active and daily consumption of a psychoactive stimulant, the state was able to repress, oppress and exploit the people for decades to little opposition.

The dire conditions that have been imposed upon Yemen have forced the Yemeni people to rely solely and squarely on national and local produce instead of an economy over-reliant on foreign imports that have proven unsustainable and have become weaponized by the enemies of the country: “woe to a nation that eats what it does not plant, and wears what it does not weave” is a common Arabic saying that beautifully ties together what Ansarallah’s economic plan is all about.

What Ansarallah has managed to establish while facing war, starvation, and a crippling blockade, is a system that could best be described as akin to Yugoslavian worker self-management but without the overtly socialist aesthetic and tone. In fact, this system was what Ibrahim Al-Hamdi was trying to establish with his five-year plan but never realized before his death in 1977. The state in Sana’a does not control farmland, nor does it dictate the output of agrarian produce. Farmland and output are controlled by the cooperatives, which are wholly owned and administered by Yemen’s peasantry.

Apparently 7 students got arrested at that school who banned the Students for Justice in Palestine https://archive.is/nKIle fuckers are hardcore

"I saw police choking out the students, like hands on the front of their necks choking them. I saw police with their knees in the backs of kids. It was really very horrific," Brandeis student Farah Mahmoud said. "The rest of the police that weren't actually involved in the arresting were going around trying to disperse the group and they had their batons out and they were kind of just pushing people back to get them away, taking people's signs. It was honestly very violent from the police whereas the students were very, very peaceful the whole time."

Brandeis says the students were chanting speech the university deems as hateful such as, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free."
