They built a railway line 100 years ago but a hurricane took it out and they never fixed it. A perfect allegory for Amerikkka really
name of the railway?
Florida East Coast Railway. Built by Henry Flagler. Destroyed by the Labor Day hurricane of 1935.
Overseas Railroad
they never fixed it
No one could figure out Who Would Pay For It™
Same thing happened with the only dedicated intercontinental Amtrak line after Katrina
They recently were talking it down. They may be finished taking it down by now. Was strange to see something so old finally being taken down.
:bourgeoisie: :speech-side-l-1:"I want to live on some islands but I also want to drive my car around, cause that's what I want on my idyllic island paradise, loud engines, bad air and traffic accidents.":speech-side-l-2:
Gotta get to Keys Divorce Lawyer (the one by veteran's key) to fight the judge over the weekend house where the driveway is a single point of failure critical infrastructure that connects me to the other single point of failure critical infrastructure
Also one of the two highly vulnerable roads to my house is a toll road. If I don't want to drive an extra 45 minutes twice a day, I get to pay for the privilege of still being stuck in traffic.
there's like 20 stretches of this including the literal reminder as to why this thing is a bad idea crumbling into the ocean right next to it how do you look at this and go "perfect"
when a black man was accused of a crime in south florida in the 1920 there was a system by black floridians at the time to smuggle people to the florida keys because the cops/lynch mob couldnt get out there quickly. pretty cool.
Enslaved people in Florida would be sheltered by the Seminoles, if I recall that correctly. It was certainly true in Louisiana of its native population.
yep! thats why theres so many black seminoles!
they built a railroad out to key west, and then just let the tracks rot. You can still see much of the rails and supports still out there.
One of the most wild things I've seen is the elevation signage in the Everglades, just north of the keys. They range from 0-1m above sea level. The ecosystems change drastically depending on minuscule differences, with forests on hills that you can't even distinguish from the grass marshes beneath them. It's like the first time I saw a massive wildfire, this feeling of existential dread as it suddenly becomes clear just how vulnerable we are to climate change. An area that took five hours to drive across, one of the most ecologically vital places on the continent, will just be gone.
It's ok, we'll just convert north Florida into the new Everglads
The only hills in Florida are in Claremont. Stop lying. 😉
how is there no ports
say sike right now. no fucking way
well, the navy and the coast guard. but for civilian purposes? Can't find any. Marinas a-plenty though. And obviously a fucking cruise ship dock lol
I think there's a ferry that goes there from Tampa bay or something?
They might have stopped that one. I might be thinking of a different ferry though
I was thinking of the one from Marco Island: https://www.keywestexpress.net/key-west-express-ferries
Boy better hope the keys are full of longshoremen experienced in break bulk cargo
It would be a shame if so many boat sellers became stranded for days in their little wanna be Little Saint James
Until I went to the Keys, I thought everyone was just joking about this place called Florida. It's like being in biology class and not being 100% sure if narwhals are mythical but you just go along with it.
