Goddamn did I not expect that. So many moments I was literally laughing. Like, actually. Not a huff of air from my nose. Or a recognition of “oh yeah, that was a joke. Good job, funny man.” Like, actually had to stop cooking and set down the knife and laugh.

have said it before and will say it again: would not be a wokescold anteefuh sjw tankie today if I didn't watch Jon Stewart in my youth.

or at least I would not have been nearly as politically educated and aligned, and would be the same person I am today but dumber, if that's possible

[-] ClimateChangeAnxiety@hexbear.net 15 points 7 months ago

Yeah same. His show was what got 12 year old me to start caring about politics.

This is why ripping too hard on guys like this (or Bernie, or AOC) is so foolish: most people don't become leftists overnight. We should be constantly building and expanding the pipeline left, not blowing up the start of it once we're a little farther on the way ourselves.

We routinely recognize that prominent leftist figures can make major contributions in many areas while making major errors in others; they're "X% good/Y% bad" rather than all good or all bad. The same analysis should apply to figures who are useful for getting a ton of people started down the right path but drop the ball at some point.

Stewart can be funny but he is definitely still a lib. reposting an old comment of mine:

when I was a lib I used to like The Daily Show because it was kinda cathartic to watch them mock conservatives.

However I remember one episode where they were covering a story about students at Berkeley protesting the marines opening up a recruiting office on campus, and basically the entire segment was them shitting on these kids. The students were anti-war and didn’t want the US military recruiting future killers on their campus. The Daily Show even had their news correspondent Rob Riggle (retired marine) interviewing students and trapping them in ridiculous “gotchas” to make them look dumb. It was one of the first moments as a baby leftist where I was like “wait… why are they doing this? those kids are right to not want the military at their school.” And watching this thickneck piece of shit Riggle bully young people who obviously don’t know enough to “debate” him while a camera is shoved in their face was infuriating.

Then later I watched Stewart perform at USO shows in Iraq and Afghanistan (among other places) to entertain these imperialist tools and I just lost any shred of respect I still had for him. He even had that awful “Rally to Restore Sanity” event in D.C. which was effectively a giant centrist circlejerk that accomplished absolutely nothing. I haven’t even paid attention to anything he’s done since but I’m not the least bit surprised that he’s still a dipshit.

also don't ask him about his views on China

Couple of thoughts, in no particular order:

  • He hasn't lost his mojo
  • he kinda looks like shit
  • what's with his pink eyes? Hit a bowl before he went on? Awesome.
  • it really feels like the show and material from the late aughts. It felt very nostalgic, which is a credit to him and the writers
  • things are way different today where I can feel the disconnect between those old days where the show was funny and the contradictions were lower, compared to today where the system is even more decrepit and broken than it was back then. Like the tone was peak 2006-2007 but the content is today and how fucking shit this system is.
  • is he going to do this every week up until the election?
  • some typical lib shit at the end about how we need to put the work in after the election. Give me a break.

The difference between him and every other modern talk show host whose clips I sometimes watch is so fucking stark lol.

I was too young to catch his show back then. I’ve since gone and watched some clips but they obviously don’t hit the same.

And the lib shit you mentioned becomes even starker when you watch some other videos from this episode. On YouTube they put up an interview with a lady from the Economist and allows her to spew her economic ideology.

She’s talks positively about how different European liberalism is than American “lefty” liberalism. It starts with her saying it’s about small governments and individualism and bs and compares it, favourably, to Thatcher, Reagan, and Clinton - all while Stewart sits there agreeing.

Then she talks of the real threat being this liberalism being taken over in the mainstream by “big government” and social conservative type of people like Trump, Orban etc.

And how this segment of conservatives support Putin becuase he’s also anti-woke and that is why we must support Ukraine and NATO.

All while I’m sitting here thinking how is this different from any CNN anchor bringing on a “moderate” conservative who’s anti-Trump? It’s the same policies!

Oh yeah, during the woke segment, Jon says the old war between Capitalism and Communism is replaced by Woke and Anti-Woke.

Give me a break.

These ghouls are all the same. Doesn’t matter if they call lthemselves liberals or “European liberals” or social conservatives or whatever the fuck. They are all capitalists.

It’s fun to laugh sometimes, tho. He’s only going to be hosting once a week. The rest of the time it’s some other white dude.

I didn't watch the interviews, I only had the stomach for the cold open.

What you said about being too young to experience the show when Stewart was originally on shook some more thoughts and feelings loose in me. I really think that, fundamentally Stewart hasn't changed.

It is absolutely the point of bringing him back onto the show, and he killed it. It was the Daily Show of 2005. It's back.

It's me that has changed. chomsky-yes-honey

[-] HexbearGPT@hexbear.net 20 points 7 months ago

He interviewed the editor of the fucking economist 🤮

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 1 points 7 months ago

Oh yeah, during the woke segment, Jon says the old war between Capitalism and Communism is replaced by Woke and Anti-Woke.

Give me a break.

I'm out of touch with what libs think. Is China anti-woke? Isn't that literally the same as what some shitbag like Maher opines about?

[-] Aryuproudomenowdaddy@hexbear.net 7 points 7 months ago

is he going to do this every week up until the election?

He's only going to be hosting on Monday's, I assume they're still doing guest hosts the rest of the time but I haven't watched it in like a decade.

[-] jackalope@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago

What's the alternative to putting in the work before or after the election? Your alternative is to just give up to nihilistic hopelessness?

[-] footfaults@hexbear.net 22 points 7 months ago

My policy preferences are not reflected in the current two party system, nor are they wanted by the current system, and I benefit far beyond what should be allowed by the current system due to my outward physical characteristics.

I tried very hard to help build dual power but it didn't really work out

So honestly I don't know what your point is, because electoralism doesn't work.

[-] Wakmrow@hexbear.net 7 points 7 months ago

Lol I assume this is SRA related I recognize all of that.

Keep trying friend.

I don't think Stewart's point implies electorialism. I think his point is inclusive of it but it seems he pretty clearly is calling for direct action in people's lives over relying on politicians.

[-] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 16 points 7 months ago

I'd like a candidate born sometime after the Jackson administration

[-] jackalope@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Agreed? And? I don't think Stewart is advocating for electoralism here.

[-] Aryuproudomenowdaddy@hexbear.net 11 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Do you feel like politicians in the U.S. really give a shit what people think? There seems to be a growing consensus that aiding and abetting genocide is bad but the only thing Butcher Biden's admin is concerned with is that it looks bad and they need to rethink their PR strategy, not you know, stopping the aiding and abetting of a genocide because they're little Zionist freaks.

[-] jackalope@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago

Stewart isn't advocating for electorialism here. Of anything he's arguing for direct action.

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 8 points 7 months ago

Execute the entire political class of the US empire and make the corporations tremble?

[-] jackalope@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago

That sounds like putting in work...

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago
[-] jackalope@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Agreed, that seems to be Jon Stewart's entire point...

[-] GarbageShoot@hexbear.net 1 points 7 months ago

I think you would be hard-pressed to get a positive course of action out of his ideology beyond merely saying things. If it's not obvious, that is not a good way to handle the problem that is neoliberal bourgeois "democracy", which is content to let you say whatever you want because it will still have the last word and a monopoly on violence.

[-] HexbearGPT@hexbear.net 22 points 7 months ago

It was fairly funny but it is complete lib shit

[-] GayTuckerCarlson@hexbear.net 16 points 7 months ago

live-tucker-reaction Wtf why aren't you people reacting the same when my show came back on X, formerly known as Twitter?

[-] deforestgump@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago

Cause racism.
