It's been a while we update the rule since the inception of this instance, and i think it's time we get a proper rule set for (hopefully) better handling of situation. Here's the 4 general rule to be enacted:

1)Be Nice

This one is self explanatory and intentionally open-ended. Just get along with each other and we'll be fine.

2)No Bigotry

This one is also self explanatory. Malaysia is a multiracial country and sometime we tend to rub shoulder with each other, sometime stuff getting heated up. Argument is fine, disagreement is fine, as long as it stay civil and no one get banned. Bigotry include but not exclusive to: Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Xenophobia, and so on.

3)No Porn

Do not post, share, or distribute any pornographic material. NSFW discussion(in words only) is allowed, and should be marked as NSFW.

4)No Ads & Spam

Do not spam this Instance with irrelevant shitpost or ads. If your intention of creating an account or community is to flood this place with shitpost, then it break this rule.

All the rule above also extend to the username, community name, banner, and avatar.

Now, lets talk about community that's without mod and community that's without post + inactive mod. There's a few community that fit the description, namely !quran, !hadith, !fiqh, !backlash76, !islam, !wanita, and !islamichistory. For these communities, if anyone want to claim it, do let us know. By the 8th of September, 2023, if no one claim it or no activity from the mod, it will be purged.

I'll further elaborate on this topic in the future.

Next, we talk about community creation. We have two paths to choose from:

  1. Open up like how it used to be: anyone can create any community as long as it adhere to the rules, or;

  2. Request only: user will have to request for the community to be created, but as long as the community in question isn't breaking the rule and the general vibe of this instance, it will be approved.

I'm leaning toward 1 and only goes to 2 for temporary measure, but i accept suggestion.

As for prohibiting community creation from new account, we might need to either remove it ourselves, make a bot to auto-remove community that's created by new account, or request lemmy dev to have this function to be added. For now I'll leave it to two option.

I guess that's all. Do discuss and give suggestion about anything above. It still haven't set in stone.

To clarify on #3, people who wish to contribute to NSFW subs elsewhere on the fediverse should not upload to monyet.cc. Use some other file host. File uploads to monyet.cc should follow this instance's rules regardless of where on the fediverse are the uploads destined to be posted.

As for #4, we should clarify that monyet.cc is not really a generic instance. All created communities by default pertain to Malaysia or for Malaysians first. Moving forward, the community !name, name, and sidebar should reflect this, to help distinguish this fact for the fedi-wide interface (e.g. federated search/explorer).

Is this instance ABOUT Malaysia, or FOR Malaysians? There's a big difference between the two. The first is as you say, pertaining to Malaysia. All communities should be Malaysia-centric. The second would recognise that just because we're Malaysians we may still have interests that are unrelated to the country, and for those who want to start a community, our home instance is generally the logical and most convenient place to do it.

But yes, Malaysia-centric communities should definitely make their focus clear to prevent confusion from visitors.

It can be both, I guess. But it only works on the premise that the user is local. If it was like the case yesterday, i.e. non-locals making generic communities, then it fits neither case. It'd make less friction if community mods and instance admins have more in common imo.

OTOH, I can also see how having general communities for the worldwide fediverse here would be able to draw in more users from across the fediverse. Then they might stick around for the local communities. That said, anyone endeavouring on that should promote it hard because this place is the fediversal backwater. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

One extreme solution for clear MY vs global community distinction is to have the community names prefixed with ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ vs ๐ŸŒ, but I'll leave it to the admins to decide.

After the you-know-what incident, it got me thinking: should we defederate from porn instance so it's less likely repeat of the issue? Will probably put it up for discussion later. But yes good catch.

we should clarify that monyet.cc is not really a generic instance.

I'm not too keen on doing that tbh, site isn't owned by me and i can't make that choice by myself, but i do see the benefits of making it more focus on Malaysia content so it doesn't seems so mixed bag. But perhaps from now on the community that's focused on Malaysia should reflect that in the places you suggest.

For Malaysian focus, it can be a bit hard to draw the lines though, like if I post a photo of a cat do I need to clarify that the cat photo is taken in Malaysia? I think we can define it as a community by Malaysians for Malaysians and anyone whoโ€™s interested in Malaysia (which is pretty much the status quo). As long as the topics are about Malaysia or of interest to Malaysians, not too terbabas like posting about US politics then ok kot

[-] Annoyed_Crabby 1 points 8 months ago

Ohh yeah, i meant it as Malaysian focused, as long as it's for malaysian then it should name that way.

should we defederate from porn instance

Ugh.. I hate that this is coming up as an option. To clarify, is this referring to the recent CSAM spam events? I would hope that the defed was temporary, if that's the reason.

[-] Annoyed_Crabby 1 points 8 months ago

No, it's unrelated, but any image of porn posted on other instance will sometime copied over to our database, make it no different between this and someone from our instance posting porn in this instance or on other instance. It still end up in our database. This is why a lot of instance delete all their image from the past 24 hours in their database just to be safe.

For now, i don't think it would be a problem, so that's why it just a thought and not an option.

I might be walking into tinfoil territory here, but...

I also feel like the sudden spike yesterday is directly related with the concerted effort to poison the well of the entire ecosystem by bad actors posting CP. Since !lemmyshitpost@lemmy.world, the ground zero, has been quarantined, the effort shifted to spamming it in as many instances as possible, with the shitposts as a smokescreen.

[-] weecious 3 points 8 months ago

Hmm that make sense. Yesterday there was new community that was removed an hour or two after its creation.

Sounds like these bad actors won't just leave lemmy alone.

[-] cendawanita 1 points 8 months ago

How about using delays for new accounts and communities? Like, you can only start a comm after 72 hours from account creation? Or new accounts can post comments but new threads in the first 24 hours gets a 6-hour delay or mod approval first?

[-] Annoyed_Crabby 3 points 8 months ago

Sadly i don't see such tool in the setting. It would be super handy to control spam bot though. I could put up a ticket on github but there's no guarantee anyone will care enough to implement it.
