Quiet quitting = just doing a job

Quiet vacationing = whenever you're not at your job

[-] betelgeuse@hexbear.net 61 points 5 months ago

I think a lot of journalists are quiet writing where they say absolutely nothing despite being hired to say something.

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 53 points 5 months ago

And here I thought we moved onto hating Gen Z in the media?

Quiet unemployment

[-] hexaflexagonbear@hexbear.net 33 points 5 months ago

I think this article probably has genz in mind. Millenials are in their 30s and 40s, they're not bringing in new cultural trends to work.

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

I dunno, I like to think I'm still skewing stats and throwing curveballs that the middle managers haven't seen yet.

[-] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago

No, it actually talks about how trends are different between the two groups, with gen z more likely to openly complain about unfair treatment, and millennials more likely to quietly circumvent unfair policies without speaking to managers about them.

[-] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 6 points 5 months ago

not reporting PTO isn't a new cultural trend tho

[-] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 39 points 5 months ago

Unlimited PTO isn't necessarily the solution. Workers who receive 11 to 15 days of PTO each year are more likely to use up their days, Rodney says, but there's a significant drop-off once people get 16 or more days.

Instead, employers can get creative in their PTO benefits, like offering company-wide week-long shutdowns around major holidays, paying new hires to take a vacation before they start, or requiring employees take a certain number of PTO days each quarter to pace their time off throughout the year.

More broadly, many Americans from the Harris Poll survey say the U.S. should adopt laws common in Europe that enforce boundaries on working hours vs. personal time, like extended vacation policies (think: a month off in August), longer lunch breaks, workweeks shorter than 40 hours, and regulations that protect slower response time outside of work hours.

kril-drained

Look unless you're going to pay for an entire proper length parental leave for all of your employees this shit would be infuriating.

When we had our first we both took off 12 weeks and we had to save up PTO for the entire year, along with banking the max allowed the previous year to avoid complete financial collapse. Being told that I wasn't going to be allowed to come in for a week around Memorial Day and had to use my own PTO to get paid would have had my blood boiling. Telling me I had to use 25% of my hours every quarter also would have been disastrous.

Just fire managers who abuse employees for taking days off, god damn.

Workers who receive 11 to 15 days of PTO each year

in amerikkka you're allowed to give your emplyees 11 days vacation per fucking year?? land of the free lmao amerikkka amerikkka amerikkka

[-] fox@hexbear.net 28 points 5 months ago

In fact there is no federal minimum number of paid days off

[-] Lerios@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago

harold-manic jesus fucking christ

what is the point of a federal government if not to set regulations and minimums like that (obviously the purpose of the US federal governemnt is to serve the bourgeoisie, but goddamn how does it get away with being so much more mask off than all the other bourgeois states)

[-] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

Knowing this shit about America's government, State and Revolution made sense straight away the first time I read it, because plainly, America's government doesn't do anything except resolve class contradictions. It doesn't regulate, it doesn't guarantee any sort of minimum basis for human life, it only serves the bourgeoisie, it doesn't even attempt to hold up any sort of facade to the contrary.

I just finally got upgraded from 10 days of PRO per year to 15 days, literally this month.

oh, and lest you operate under incorrect assumptions, many (most?) US employers combine vacation and sick time into PTO time. so that's 15 days per year of vacation time and sick time, combined, so if you take a two-week vacation you better hope you don't catch the flu or COVID or anything else that'll knock you out for more than a week – or for more than a week minus any other miscellaneous time you need off, like, say, going to the doctor, taking your pet to the vet in an emergency, going to your grandma's funeral...

[-] EmoThugInMyPhase@hexbear.net 19 points 5 months ago

In the land of the free, the country’s “birthday”, July 4th, is a national holiday, but private companies get to choose whether you get the day off. This goes for about every other federal holiday. In Asian countries that celebrate lunar new year, workers usually get anywhere from an entire week to an entire month off because they actually value the holidays

[-] Jenniferrr@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

Lmao... lol 11 days vacation is considered good

[-] combat_brandonism@hexbear.net 14 points 5 months ago

that's probably above average, and certainly above the median lol

[-] TheLepidopterists@hexbear.net 10 points 5 months ago

My employer gives entry level workers 10 to start with, you get 15 after working there for 5 years (it's a high attrition industry).

[-] CarbonScored@hexbear.net 9 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Fucking hell these comments are depressing. Even in ukkk it's 28 days a year legal minimum (including 8-9 public holidays). Plus sick leave. And that is absolutely nowhere near enough.

[-] SeducingCamel@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

I'm having to hard-core budget my pto rn so I can actually see my mom, dad, and then make it to my sister's wedding. It's going to leave me with exactly 0 hours of pto and no odds of taking a vacation just for myself for months

[-] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 20 points 5 months ago

I had a job that offered 5 extra days of PTO a year to anyone who reached the holidays with less than 5 days of PTO remaining for the year.

The kicker?

They had a mandatory shutdown during the holidays that, for some inscrutable tax reason (as I understood it), they broke up into chunks of company holidays and mandatory PTO days, meaning your reward for using your PTO was to be given enough PTO days to cover the days they were forcing you to take without your consent. They framed this as a benefit.

So because I’m a dumbass i had to look up wtf quiet vacationing is, and what i found doesnt match up with what is implied here.

Can someone spell it out for me, what ‘quiet vacationing’ means here? Like quiet quitting is bare minimum, nothing more. What is quiet vacationing, vacationing without using PTO if you have it or smth?

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 40 points 5 months ago

Much like quieting quitting means just having a job, i think quiet vacationing just means like when you go home

[-] RyanGosling@hexbear.net 38 points 5 months ago

If I had to guess, it’s taking PTO without asking first since in most places, there’s technically no rule that you need to ask for permission, just that you notify them ahead of time

[-] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 29 points 5 months ago

I think that "quiet vacationing" is just like, going on vacation without taking PTO. Don't tell anybody, don't ask for PTO, just don't do any work and fuck off to Bali for a week or something. Only works for remote workers of a specific email job class.

[-] Tunnelvision@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago

That makes sense. Before I got to the end I was like that’s just quitting quitting lmfao

[-] Ericthescruffy@hexbear.net 23 points 5 months ago

I have absolutely done this and fully encourage everyone who has the ability to follow suite. The best part is I got a fucking productivity spot bonus two weeks ago. Seriously: fuck the cult of work. Its all bullshit. Live your best fucking life comrades!!! I play hookie all the time to go see my 9 year olds school events.

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 23 points 5 months ago

this only works for tech bros and other 'remote worker' types that don't have a boss demanding they be in the office 24/7 and watching over their shoulders

but if you can do it, i also highly recommend it

[-] Ericthescruffy@hexbear.net 24 points 5 months ago

Yeah, 100% recognize I am privileged to be able to do it. Not everyone can...but by God I wish everyone could.

[-] Mokey@hexbear.net 12 points 5 months ago

Im taking a two week vacation in august but im gonna take a week in June because im tired of this place. I havent been on a real vacation (all the others were to do other work or dead family) in years. A little longer than 5 years but in reality probably since I was 15.

Ive been so afraid to take vacation because I didnt want to get fired from my job or my debt was so high that i couldnt fathom taking a break. Im so angry and stressed out all the time. I hate living in America and I hate everyone who likes it. I hate my boss and I hate my job.
