$40,000 does seem to be a little low for the only existing cultural item from a civilization that has been completely destroyed.

Also, you'd think they'd include a book or something in their "only one person will ever know we existed" probe.

I say it should have not gone to picard but in an alternate timeline it went to a borg drone. Immediately assimilated into the entire collective.

[-] BrazenSigilos@ttrpg.network 3 points 1 day ago

Well it took some time, but technically

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

It's a great episode in terms of characterization and poignancy, but the plot device itself makes no sense. The probe is meant to be used one time and then shut down forever in order to preserve their civilization? At the very least allow it to be used more than once.

[-] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

But then the probe has to distribute flutes out to everyone like it’s some kind of Space Oprah, reducing the future auction price of each flute.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Maybe just give instructions for how to make the flute?

[-] PlasticExistence@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

“No, no, he didn’t suggest we give away the entire business. Don’t listen to him.”

[-] Silentiea@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 days ago

I mean, they included a book or something alright.

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago

The auctioneers could’ve at least watched the episode. That alone would have improved their appraisal.

[-] buzz86us@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

Even family guy mentioned that episode

[-] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 29 points 3 days ago

Well, MacFarlane is an unabashed Trekkie.

[-] then_three_more@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

Just searching the episode title would have gone a long way, it's all over lists of top episodes.

[-] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 33 points 3 days ago

Oh great, how many people are gonna go watch that and come back here and start making memes....

I look forward to it

Good, good.

Edit: had to change gifs 'cause what displayed before posting was apparently not the full gif and made no sense afterwards.

[-] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago

Which valuation is reasonable depends entirely on whether or not it's been cleaned.

[-] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 39 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Definitely wants that authentic Picard spittle residue.

[-] xantoxis@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

He plays it in other episodes, too. I assume it's the same one, no reason for the prop department to make two.

[-] ummthatguy@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago

I'm sure it is. Only going to point out that he "plays" it about as much as Bowie "juggled" those crystals.

[-] xantoxis@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

How would they get another guy's lips to play it while picard is in frame? I mean sure, he probably doesn't actually make music with it, but there's no reason he wouldn't have put it to his actual lips.

[-] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

They wouldn't. The audio was dubbed.

[-] angrystego@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

So the spittle is still authentic!

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.
