So she was told communism was bad by bad people who supported slavery?

[-] DamarcusArt@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 9 hours ago

Maybe it's because my family are all absolute pieces of shit human beings who would lie about everything, but I really don't get why these people take "my grandfather told me" as proof it must be true. Maybe your grandfather is a lying sack of shit who is mad the communists took away his slaves?

And in one sentence, you just described every Cuban boomer expat I've ever known.

I'm sorry your great uncle sucked

A few years ago, there was a video that went viral of a Cuban gusano (in a MAGA hat no less) who pulled up a picture on her phone of her dear grandpa who the evil communists murdered. He was just a respected police officer, according to her.

Turns out, because she showed the picture of him, people were able to identify who this “dear grandpa” was. He was actually known to history. He was one of Batista’s henchmen who tortured and murdered quite a few people. As many at the time pointed out, that guy absolutely got what he deserved and executing him was cool and good.

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 5 points 10 hours ago

Oh fuck I remember that lol...and he wasn't any average henchman, either. He was like Batista's number one, go-to torture guy. I wanna say it was either Colonel Fermin Cowley Gallegos or Colonel Jesús Sosa Blanco.

Reminds me of that lady who talked at the DNC about her and her family "fleeing communism", but her father was part of the Nicaraguan death squads or something?

[-] BrownMinusBlue@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 20 hours ago

Pls, pls can a comrade get s source?

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 64 points 1 day ago

And their uncle deserved it, it clearly didn't work.

Given how reactionaries behave here, how they lie about the poor, lie about queer people, lie about their international enemies as easily as breathing, why would anyone believe their claims about what happened to them in a communist country?

[-] Runcible@hexbear.net 46 points 1 day ago

because they want to

[-] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 71 points 1 day ago

Vietnamese liberals are more annoying than Chinese liberals. I remember someone from Vietnam telling me about Fullbright University and how they showed students there a video on American soldiers during the Vietnam war and the liberals were actually in tears because they “had no idea how hard it was for American soldiers.”

Showing footage of the eastern front to the class to talk about how hard it must have been for the nazis to do all that walking

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 79 points 1 day ago

The more I learn about the Vietnam War, the less and less sympathy I have for its veterans. I'm at the point of "They weren't actually spat on, but they should have been. Probably flayed."

Unless you deserted, mutinied, or defected, you're on par with the Wehrmacht at best and more likely to have been the SS at worst.

I extend this to all USAmerican soldiers, past and present

[-] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 19 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I have plenty of sympathy for Vietnam War veterans.

spoilerThe ones who fought against the imperialist pigs, that is. uncle-ho-2

[-] CleverOleg@hexbear.net 13 points 20 hours ago

How the IOF is conducting itself in Gaza is reasonable approximation for how the US military conducted itself in Vietnam.

[-] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 42 points 1 day ago

It was a genocidal war in my view.

[-] AcidSmiley@hexbear.net 37 points 1 day ago
[-] SerLava@hexbear.net 29 points 1 day ago

meanwhile they slipped in "oh by the way you don't need to see a rifle when you're tallying up your score!" which is just stepping diagonally into regular old genocide

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 28 points 1 day ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

It really was and I'm also thinking it's why so many Vietnam vets had PTSD. The nazis had the same problem when they were carrying out massacres before they built industrial murder camps.

[-] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 59 points 1 day ago

Sounds like it needed to be 20 years

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 68 points 1 day ago

And what was your great uncle's occupation before being put into that camp, hmm? I have the feeling he wasn't a plumber.

[-] PointAndClique@hexbear.net 66 points 1 day ago

My great uncle had the egg monopoly in Vietnam

[-] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 49 points 1 day ago

NOT THE EGG MONOPOLY! I WAS WORRIED THAT'S WHAT IT'D BE!

[-] barrbaric@hexbear.net 71 points 1 day ago

I would simply learn that communism was good after a very short time in the camp so I got released faster, but I guess I'm built different.

[-] Yukiko@hexbear.net 51 points 1 day ago

That's a lot of words to say that your great uncle owned slaves.

[-] GladimirLenin@hexbear.net 45 points 1 day ago

Your great uncle deserved it, loser.

[-] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 49 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Clearly not for long enough

[-] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 36 points 1 day ago

Looks like they did a bad job of re-education.
