Hello comrades and welcome to the third improvement megathread of October! bonfire

As usual, some discussion ideas:

  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • Do you have any goals or plans for next week?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Poster caption: "(here is) Your lamp, comrade engineer!

The Matter of honor of the Soviet specialists - give your experience and knowledge.

FROM THE OFFICE - TO A MINE, TO A SITE!"

Good luck with your goals! unity

This week I tried a new habit where I read at least one page of a book after my afternoon nap. It was a success, I did some reading on 5 days. It worked because I'm reading a non-fiction book that you can read just a few pages and get something out of it. I will try to do this regularly from now on. read-theory

Overall it was a decent week, aside from reading I also did some meditation and went running on 2 days.

Also, I found a cool website - Open Food Facts - that provides info about food products. It describes how processed the food item is, what is its nutritional quality, how bad is it for the environment and so on.

Ooh, thanks for the link, I've been trying to eat healthier/more ethically and that's a great resource

Cleaning my rain gutters before rainy season really kicks off, it's kind of a pain in the ass but getting a bunch of gunk out of there at once is oddly satisfying

sobriety/alcoholismnyet

Maintained sober streak, think I've got 3+ months now? That's not really that long in the big picture but it's like a quarter of a year and idk the last time I was dry that long and mentally I feel like it's gonna stick this time

Still haven't handled my finances or renovated my bedroom like I've wanted to for awhile but I think I settled on a new amp head and a freeze-gamer PC as my treaty-treats for using my booze money getting sober, there's a really affordable lunch box tube head that's perfect for my needs and budget and I only need mid hardware to run the games I want to check out

diet/exerciseStepped on a scale for the first time in awhile and was like joker-stare

Set a goal weight and have been better about eating healthier and portion control

My legs have been really achy and my knees hurt and the ankle I rolled is still bugging me but I've been more active overall

Want to update my boosters and get a flu shot and workout clothes that fit better then get back to a gym and lift eventually

I yearn for a good leg day but my health is kinda yes-honey-left

Congrats on the streak! solidarity

For reaching your goal weight, I recommend cronometer.com. It's super easy to track your nutrition because you can easily copy and paste individual items or entire days. It also shows all the macro and micronutrients.

Btw what games do you want to check out? I got a gamer PC relatively recently so I also started checking out a bunch of games that I couldn't run before. feral-hog

Thanks! Will check that out.

I'm a big Halo dork and was a console kid and never had a good PC and I wanna get the MCC for the mods and Infinite. Depending on what kinda PC build looks good for the price I can find, maybe something that can run Helldivers 2. Also always kinda wanted to check out Apex Legends since Titanfall is neat but idk if I fuck with battle royales

I've been better at budgeting! I'm managing myself better and staying sober too. My schedule has become more consistent and I'm enjoying the stability

diet/exerciseHaven't stress ate in a while, meal prepped veggies/pea soup/beans for the week. Starting to come together nicely and while I do feel lacking some days I'm starting to see this as a new normal. I can keep this up for the long term and I'm not gonna burn out.

I exercised 3 times last week mostly trying to do negative pull ups/dips, my theory is while weights good my body weight will go down to adjust for exercise as I also diet. There's also the feel of being a kid again climbing shit as I work against my body weight so that's fun

Continuing to study for job-related stuff. Going ahead of schedule.

Have successfully re-learned stuff regarding manifolds and tangent spaces.

Trying and failing to re-learn assembly.

Turns out getting back on the wagon when your heart isn't in it is harder than I thought. I bought a fifth of rum and drank it in 2 days. Life is just kind of miserable and this little bit of escapism helps in a way I need it to. I need to make a whole bunch of changes before not drinking becomes a serious option for the long term and I fear those changes are harder than I can manage. Seeing the absolute depravity of the world and being completely helpless to do anything productive about it sure as fuck doesn't help either. Shit is hard and I just wish I had a reasonable path towards a better future

I'm on a bit of a down swing (not in a defeatist way, just in a things haven't been going as planned way). My spirit remains bright and steeled but things haven't been too great for ya boy this week. I remain of good cheer and positive mindset most certainly. Also not in the foolish "don't look at the world around you" way, but in the cool "stoic and resolute that I will achieve my goals in the face of adversity, and that adversity makes me stronger if I learn from it" way.

sleep schedule basically reasonable, trouble actually getting out of bed though

I always put my phone as far from the bed as possible so when the alarm rings in the morning I have to get up and walk across the room to turn it off. This completely removes the agony of forcing myself to get out of bed which could otherwise take forever. It's a very simple trick but very effective. Btw which book did you read? What are your batch meals?

[-] blight@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

yeah, trouble is I want my phone by the bed to listen to stuff to fall asleep. plus when I did it like you, I would just get back into bed immediately afterwards shrug-outta-hecks, and I have lingering day-ruining vibes about wake up alarms from that period. much better for me to focus on going to sleep on time…

I don’t want to dox myself, but I read a silly little book with a very marx-joker vibe, and I cooked a bean stew bean

Keeping on, keeping on. Workout routine has more or less stabilized aside from the days were work feels like its a bit more soul crushing than usualcruelty-desolate . Starting to prepare myself to work towards heavylifting. Diet has been so so, definitely could do more to eat healthier, but I've also been eating smaller portions and trying to fast from dinner up until lunch the next day.

Self Improvement

266 readers
1 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
