a friend of mine was telling me about some friend of his who went to grad school in China right after college. i dunno if it was even tech, but he had studied mandarin in undergrad.

his first several years, he would comeback for the holidays and big family stuff. then he got some job there. over the years he would return less and less, until eventually he just stopped coming back to the US.

can you imagine? it sounds like something out of a fairy tale.

sounds like something out of a NYTimes propaganda piece tbh. RIP your friend, the CCP got to him

Wow, that's disgusting! Where would someone go to get bombarded with these tech job offers? You know, so I can avoid them?

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 21 points 1 year ago

Beware

spoilergoogle China job board and you can find plenty of jobs to apply to https://jobs.echinacities.com/ https://www.hiredchina.com/jobs https://www.laowaicareer.com/

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 63 points 1 year ago

I'd love to be poached but I'm afraid I'm just tech, no talent.

cap-think : "Whoa....I'm richer than ever...I have been having the best past five years of my life! I think....I think...."

capitalist-laugh: "I'll fire everyone and have those that remain pick up the slack, clearly I don't need so many workers!"

xi-god-emperor: "Hello western tech workers, did you get burned by porky? Here, come work with us."

porky-scared-flipped: "Whoa whoa whoa....that's MY reserve army of labor to sit on and do nothing with!"

[-] redline@lemmygrad.ml 45 points 1 year ago

i request bombardment by job offer, yes on my position please. danger close is a risk im willing to take

[-] hraegsvelmir@lemm.ee 44 points 1 year ago

Surely, this is just a case where the invisible hand of the free market will be trusted to solve this issue without any intervention from Western governments and those aligned with them, no?

[-] Goblin@hexbear.net 38 points 1 year ago

I don't have any marketable skills but you could hire me as a western jester. If you tell me to dance like a monkey I'll do it. Please China, please 🥺

[-] JustSo@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

If you tell me to dance like a monkey I'll do it.

Can you afford to get there on a tourist visa? I forget the name for "white monkey" jobs but there's an industry (and I think still demand) for sure. Also just about any university qualification can get you an English teaching job in a bunch of actually-existing-communism countries still. I know that's out of reach for most people but fuck it, if you leave after graduation who's gonna try and debt collect the loans? lol

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

Holding out hope that ornamental hermits will catch on in China

[-] Quexotic@hexbear.net 35 points 1 year ago

I guess that's the natural outcome of underpayment. The west should be freaking out.

[-] TheDoctor@hexbear.net 35 points 1 year ago

Poach me please

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 34 points 1 year ago

Me please I am tech

[-] kristina@hexbear.net 33 points 1 year ago

Staff with access to sensitive Zeiss know-how received LinkedIn messages, emails and calls from Huawei representatives, offering them up to three times their salaries to join the Chinese company, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

3x? LOL ok if they came to me with that id be willing to degrade myself for the position. xi pls

[-] DefinitelyNotAPhone@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

Also, it's 3x typical tech wages. Even outside the typical tech hubs, that's still a high paying position, and you'd be making that much in a country with a massively lower COL.

kiryu-slam

I shouldn’t have ghosted that recruiter a few years back

[-] xj9@hexbear.net 31 points 1 year ago

Tell me where and how and I'll sign the fuck up

State funding for Chinese companies enables them to offer salaries beyond what Western companies can pay.

bean-think

[-] yogthos@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 year ago

but muh free markets!

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

maybe the West shouldn't have done massive sweeping industry-wide layoffs then

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

Lol stupid the west

[-] robotElder2@hexbear.net 26 points 1 year ago

What can a tech mediocrity get?

[-] GaveUp@hexbear.net 20 points 1 year ago

Fyi if you're from the West it's highly likely you'd hate working in China in the tech industry, it is a grind, even the none 996 companies

CHINA is SHOOTING at INNOCENT WESTERNERS with MONEY and JOBS!

[-] freagle@lemmygrad.ml 21 points 1 year ago

It's a brilliant use of their dollar reserves. Ya know, beyond issuing bonds in USD

[-] queermunist@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Wait fuck if I finish my degree I can escape???

[-] Jabril@hexbear.net 17 points 1 year ago

I mean, they are still taking pretty much anyone with a bachelor's degree as an English teacher in China, Vietnam, Thailand, SA, Korea, Japan, etc. Just get a TEFL/TESOL certificate and it shouldn't be hard to find a job that will get you a work visa in another country.

[-] JustSo@hexbear.net 16 points 1 year ago

Fucken a you can. One of my highschool friends is a world-top-tier mathematician and he's spent most of his adult life working in China doing work way below his capabilities just because he gets to be left alone and live outside of the western hegemony. Mufucka turned me on to communism when we were like 12. It's a shame really, in a better world he'd be the sort of mind that could solve serious fucking problems. But I think he's mostly happy with how things have panned out.

The only downside is it's hard for ex-pat workers to have true security in China (or has been, might've changed VERY recently) due to restrictive visas and few pathways to full citizenship for westoids.

I have heard of Africans who got jobs with Chinese companies. Doubt it’ll ever happen in Guatemala with our lack of tech talent lol

[-] bbnh69420@hexbear.net 9 points 1 year ago

Be the change you want to see in the world! I don’t think anyone would stereotype Africa as a hub of tech talent either

How dare they not follow along with western tech's wage fixing agreements!

[-] Alisu@hexbear.net 8 points 1 year ago

Why did I graduate art school and not tech. It's like I'm trying to not have a job

Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
