By new I mean original songs, not covers of older standards.

I quite like Merry Christmas by Ed Sheeran and Elton John

[-] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, that was the only new Christmas song I could come up with.

More than a little older than 5 years, but this is probably my favorite “new” Christmas song.

I like the Vulfpeck track Christmas in LA. Technically it may be a cover, but I haven't heard the original.

My joke suggestion is Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande. Mostly because it gives Santa very interesting Christmas themed powers of mind reading and divination.

But I really enjoyed Sia's Everyday is Christmas album which is now on regular rotation this season. They are all new Christmas songs and got some bangers.

The grammar policeman in my head is angry that nobody corrected the title. "Every Day"

Sorry I had to post the absolute best one. Even if you don't like Marvel, the song about Santa by an alien who only has third hand information on him is absolutely hilarious and wonderful.

Questionable if it's really a Christmas song, but maybe "tis the damn season" by Taylor Swift

[-] boaratio@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I've gotta throw J. Roddy Walston's "Is it Christmas Tonight?" in the mix. It's pretty catchy.

I don't know any good ones and I don't know if it's new or just one I never heard until last Christmas, but the one that goes "feeling happy, wonderful Christmas time" is the most annoying fucking song I've ever heard in my life. It's just that phrase repeated over and over again to the most generic sounding beat, and it seems to play every 3rd song at every store I shop at this year. People be making memes of that Mariah Carey one, but at least that sounds good.

Seasons Greetings in the Abyss by Sleigher

A Yuletide reinterpretation of the Slayer classic, Seasons in the Abyss. Featuring members of Haken, Protest the Hero and Dream Theater.

It's not quite what you asked for as it's not an entirely new song, they add plenty of flourishes to it and entirely new lyrics, plus it's just so silly and fun

California Holiday by Kadhja Bonet. It is a new song, not a re-recording or a remix. I also like how it doesn't mention any particular holiday. It can represent whatever winter holiday you celebrate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EmcDL8psC4
