Warning: Elon Musk now has Huffman bending the knee. Whitepeopletwitter, iselondeadyet and loads of other Elon critical subs have been banned or suspended.

Just a warning, Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.

Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.

I think that happened a long time ago

[-] peregrin5@lemm.ee 78 points 2 weeks ago

i was gonna ask if op was new to the internet.

[-] tryagain@lemmy.ml 36 points 2 weeks ago

like, what does he think we're all doing here in the first place

[-] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 weeks ago

Was it really ever a safe place for free speech?

[-] Paradox@lemdro.id 23 points 2 weeks ago

Back before they went "independent," kind of. When Sears sent legal threats to take down a post exploiting an xss bug to make a joke about grilling babies, reddit had a big public discussion on it, and ultimately left the post up

Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech, it is compromised.

That ship sailed years ago.

Reddit is no longer a safe place for free speech

Friendly reminder of when spez, many years ago, literally just changed a user's comment, and then went on to not be immediately fired over this insane breach of everything to do with customer relations.

[-] sploosh@lemmy.world 55 points 2 weeks ago

Was that while he was a moderator of /r/jailbait?

What the fuck how is this happening without anyone in the US really doing anything

[-] sc2pirate@lemmy.world 98 points 2 weeks ago

Based on the people I interact with daily basically no one realizes this is happening. Outside of the IT department no one realizes or cares. I asked how we were doing to deal with tariffs on electronics we regularly used a while back and was quietly told that was a political statement and shouldn't be brought up.

Now we have no plan and I'm too bummed to be smug about it.

Again, this is just my anecdotal view.

[-] burgersc12@mander.xyz 53 points 2 weeks ago

Ahh the classic US move, pretend the problem doesn't exist until it causes massive problems, then blame someone else.

[-] allidoislietomyself@lemmy.world 25 points 2 weeks ago

It's been working out for the rich and powerful so far. Why wouldn't it work for us too?

[-] Hubi@feddit.org 20 points 2 weeks ago

Funny, that's the exact same vibe I always get from street interviews in Russia.

I had this conversation over Christmas with my family. As horrible as everything public is, I'm arguably more worried about how the cyber world. Nothing is private, the info is controlled, and the masses are far too ignorant to have any idea how fucked everything is. I mentioned something about how tik Tok is just a data collection so for China, and I got, "whatever, they already have all of my information". I can't then go on to explain why everything is so bad, because nobody knows anything about computers, and the newest generation coming up is arguably worse than boomers, because they've only ever know smartphones and tablets.

[-] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 2 weeks ago

Half the IT department i work in built new gaming rigs ahead of time. The other half is non-gamers and republicans.

Id be relieved my work hardware is newer and good for a few years, if i wasn't a federal employee waiting to be fucked over.

Bread and circuses. As long as they aren't starving, and the forth estate only covers media circuses. Not actually reporting. They'll never know.

Pick an instance without "lemmy" in the name. Say something like: "Want to check out the fediverse? Go to discuss.online!"

Scary that they banned WhitePeopleTwitter, a sub with 3M+ subscribers.

[-] joyjoy@lemm.ee 44 points 2 weeks ago

Embrace our superior locally raised !whitepeopletwitter@sh.itjust.works, or the more inclusive and not twitter-centric !microblogmemes@lemmy.world

Ironically most of those 3 million are the "right" color to them. Can't take the heat once you start burning down the kitchen I guess.

[-] Sergio@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 weeks ago

ikr I don't think spez "bent the knee" so much as he was probably pestering Elon night and day asking how he could help.

How do people not expect this of Reddit by now

[-] zildjiandrummer1@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Reddit has been Facebook since like 2019-2020. Any social media service that gets too big just becomes a complete shit hole, hence my joining the fediverse.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 24 points 2 weeks ago

Jesus, and I thought notorious piss baby Steve Huffman could not possibly get any more pathetic.

[-] rational_lib@lemmy.world 20 points 2 weeks ago

Sorry to post a reddit thread, but supposedly this was because of death threats to Elon bootlickers. https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/1ihq6ht/whats_going_on_with_whitepeopletwitter_that_got/

Which is ironic because Elon notoriously promoted project veritas literally catfishing his own employees at Twitter, and also brought back accounts like libsoftiktok that existed to target private individuals. But to be fair to Spez, maybe he would ban those things too.

What? But I was told that elon is "not the fed" and nothing would happen to reddit who would fight tooth and nail for everyone's rights.

Gasp, shock, and amazement.

[-] Sho@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck...ppl still use that dumb pigs trash site? Huffman can do one. ๐Ÿ–•

The warrant canary died almost a decade ago. it hasn't been a safe place for a very long time.

[-] bilb@lem.monster 10 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It was always against the rules to do that. Nothing changed, except (from what I heard, I don't use Reddit anymore so correct me if I'm wrong) mods stopped enforcing the rule with regards to Musk, Musk put the spotlight on it, and Reddit (a shitty corporation trying desperately to be profitable) couldn't really do anything but enforce the rule.

It is true that Huffman is an asshole and probably likes the guy, but if it was some other public figure I don't think the outcome would be different.

[-] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Reddit was on its way out a couple years ago. i got banned for life for asking a question about violence. Eefff them.

[-] Carl@lemm.ee 9 points 2 weeks ago

Just checking: John Brown did nothing wrong, slave owners should be killed.
