Knowing then, they'd somehow force an ink subscription on the device.

[-] Agent_Karyo@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

The handheld stops working if you don't have an active subscription for stupidly expensive HP brand screen wipes. This is marketed as being part of their eyesight protection feature.

The analog sticks have a set number of rotations after which they need to be replaced. Putting off brand analog sticks in the device will instantly brick it.

But the HP experience sucks even more.

[-] villainy@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

They don't always suck, just usually. The HP Reverb 2 was a pretty good VR headset for the price. I felt like I got my money's worth out of it without any significant issues.

I have an HP monitor that is good quality, prefer it over the Samsung one I have

[-] SaltySalamander@fedia.io 2 points 5 days ago

I have two Samsung monitors. Both purchased about 10 years apart. The only Samsung displays I've ever purchased. Both have dead fucking pixels. I'll never willingly purchase a Samsung display, monitor or TV, again.

Samsung is also a pretty shit company to be fair - look at the shenanigans they pull with adverts in their smart TVs for one. Sad fact is that most companies are at least 80% shit! Even the ones that are alright are prone to quickly enshitify overnight.

You couldn't pay me to buy a HP device.

[-] Bronzebeard@lemm.ee 6 points 5 days ago

Funny coming from HP, who has poured billions into making their printing experience suck. Deliberately

It is pretty cool to see SteamOS appear on 3rd party devices, regardless how we feel about HP.

[-] Belgdore@lemm.ee 1 points 5 days ago

It reminds me of the steam machines from over a decade ago

Haven't bought an HP device since I tried to upgrade the Wi-Fi on my laptop but there was a whitelist in the BIOS and that MF wouldn't even boot.

[-] the_crotch@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

Lenovo does that too (or did 10 years ago, I haven't touched Lenovo since). There's actually forums full of hackers that will add your MAC address prefix to a bios dump for you for a price

[-] notthebees@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago

They no longer have a bios whitelist. But you can't seem to install intel wifi cards on some of their amd laptops. They just straight up don't show up in any os.

Anyone remember the HP TouchPad with WebOS that they had to fire sale?

I remember.

After switching from win10 to Bazzite, honestly the Linux experience is better for gaming. Incredibly smooth.
