Image is of Gazans breaking their fast with the Iftar meal during the ongoing Ramadan.

Due to a request by @miz@hexbear.net, this thread's COTW is Qatar.

The ceasefire deal broke down early last week after Israel unilaterally changed the terms of the agreement and then blamed Hamas for not meeting them. Violence against civilians has rapidly accelerated to pre-ceasefire levels, with many hundreds dead already, aid once again cut off, and Israeli soldiers once again entering and occupying the attritional labyrinth that is Gaza.

I'm not yet in a position to make any solid predictions or analysis, as the geopolitical situation in and around Israel has changed fairly substantially over the last 6 months; in some ways benefiting Israel, and in other ways not. We know for sure how Hamas and Ansarallah are reacting (thankfully, with open hostility to both Israel and the United States), but the state of Hezbollah has been a giant question mark for months now, and precisely what Iran plans to do (beyond the usual level of supplying weaponry and intelligence to all the allies it can) is unknown. Syria will be almost certainly be a big wildcard, and we'll have to see if the compradors in Damascus can weather the storm.

Yesterday, Israeli forces attempted to advance into the village of Kuwaya, west of Daraa in southern Syria, but were confronted by locals and fighters from the Islamic Resistance Front in Syria, who have previously clashed with Israeli forces

As a result, airstrikes were called in to support the advance of the IDF, leading to the deaths of at least 7 Syrian civilians. Yesterday alone, Israeli military actions led to the forced displacement of hundreds of Syrian families in the south. Earlier, Israeli warplanes attacked the 'T-4' Air Base in Palmyra. The IDF also seized multiple weapons and ammunition boxes in southern Syria.

Daily Israeli attacks on Syria have become the norm, often resulting in civilian deaths. Israel continues to not only strengthen and expand its occupation of Syria but also ensure that Syria is fully disarmed, denying it the right to have military equipment, even when Syria poses no threat, militarily or even in rhetoric.

Surely the HTS coalition will crumble if they allow IOF to conquer territory with impunity.

[-] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

The HTS govt is not propped up by popular support. it is propped up by a monopply of violence bestowed onto it by the Turkish government and its armed forces, which are the 2nd largest in NATO.

Turkey is completely fine with Israel given that Netanyahu allows them to conquer the Northern half of the country, so HTS will be propped up until that can be achieved.

To show you how much China-bashing is manufactured online, I found a Japan watcher channel which is basically identical to any other China watcher channel right down to how the videos and thumbnails are edited except it's targeted at Japan instead of China:

Almost none of the videos have more than 1k views.

IDK I think you kind of picked a bad example here is a better one

Overall I think its a possible mistake to think China is unique to this criticism. Yes certainly Japan gets to benefit from delusional weebs biased expectations but what I've noticed is even after the "permanent tourist" boom led by some like AbroadinJapan and others, they've been quite open in talking about the issues and downsides, despite remaining overall positive, I mean why wouldn't they? I agree Japan is not a bad place for a foreigner specially compared to post 2020 US/EU.

If you're really familiar you'll know this has always been controversial, there was this one guy in the early internet Arudou Debito yeah? He was infamous even 15 years ago and people could not accept his criticism. To be fair he is exactly the type of westerner loser that goes to Japan, gets shocked and then turns Japan hate into a career.

I think overall Americans and western are more racist and biased against Asians than not, the image of cool Japan from the 1990s is far gone and it is not hard to find open and often racist based criticism.

Quite simply genz and later are not growing up with the same Japanese cultural boom as millennials in the early 2000s and it shows. Japan is still popular but you can find pro-Chinese channels with just as many views and overall Asian racism is stronger now than ever.

In contrast to accounts that see Chinese investment in Africa as part of a grand strategy deployed by the Chinese state or as one element in an emerging Beijing Consensus counterposed to the prevailing Washington Consensus, then, on-the-ground surveys of such projects tend to reveal precisely the opposite: most Chinese firms in Africa are operating on a purely pragmatic level and have been drawn to the continent not by any state-directed incentives but instead by conventional economic imperatives.

sicko-wistful

As political scientists Lee Jones and Shahar Hameiri argue, even core geopolitical projects such as control over the South China Sea or relations with North Korea are “largely reactive” and tend to be the outcome of multiple, autonomous agents whose actions are only treated as part of a single, unified strategy after the fact. They write that “decades of state transformation, involving the fragmentation, decentralization and internationalization of party-state apparatuses, mean that many Chinese actors, with often differing interests and agendas…now operate internationally with considerable autonomy and limited coordination and oversight.” Thus, the various initiatives, bilateral agreements, and even the odd military interventions that are today portrayed as elements of a coherent and systematic strategy pursued by China’s central government instead encompass “diverse, potentially contradictory activities by a range of actors operating at different scales….”

shocked-pikachu

the mythos of China in Africa, and the general narrative of a New Cold War both serve to obscure that the global imperial order continues to be commanded by ruling class interests headquartered in the traditional administrative centers of capitalist society, which remain safely ensconced in a state machinery founded on US power. Similarly, that power continues to be embodied in a global mesh of US-aligned military infrastructure that includes not only opportunistic alliances with local governments and militias but also hundreds of overseas military bases directly hosting tens of thousands of US soldiers at any given time, alongside planet-scouring naval fleets capable of deploying genocidal scales of violence nearly anywhere in the world at the push of a button. Yet the military dimension of this order is merely a reflection of its deeper economic structure, explicitly visible in the rule of the US dollar as the de facto global currency or in the United States’ control over multilateral financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank. It is implicitly present in the dominant position of US firms within global production, where they are joined by a smaller share of companies from Western Europe and Japan. Meanwhile, at an even larger scale, individual firms, large state institutions, and all other actors within this system are ultimately subordinated to the social imperatives of the system as a whole: the drive to accumulate, the need to preserve property, the necessary use of prices and profit to determine efficiency. The ultimate sovereign of capitalist society is the mute compulsion of capital itself.36 Thus, even the most egregious forms of resource extraction conducted by Chinese firms—which are identical in kind to those of any other company of any other national origin and propelled by exactly the same balance sheet calculus—are ultimately feeding into planetary value chains that more often than not link back to lead firms in the wealthy countries.

walter-breakdown

Faced with similar conditions after the collapse of the USSR and the defeat of the Japanese in the trade war, dependency theorist Samir Amin once suggested that what we may be seeing is not so much a clear-cut hegemonic transition as the decay of hegemony in the absence of either a successor or a revolutionary socialist alternative, resulting instead in an “empire of chaos” wherein the basic mechanics of the imperial order will be lubricated with continual violence, global trade will slowly fragment into warring regional blocs, and first proxy and then increasingly direct military conflict between these blocs will again become common.

Too real. Overall a great article, thanks for sharing. Nothing entirely new hear for our Hudson-pilled posters but helps outline how American imperial hegemony is still quite strong, and how China (as of yet) is not really concerned with supplanting that any time soon.

there is also great passage about supply side jockeying, driving margins into the ground while top of the chain gets to enjoy end margins, but creating a giant firm underneath which starts to exert influence on the top.

i feel like leftist big picture guys don't pay that much attention to ip enforcement and how it's basically unlimited margins (microsoft profits are just obscene, enforced both by legal, and introduced by bribery in all of the world), and that, pardon my naivete, breaking its hold (either by piracy or open source) is a desirable action to break some part of capital, together with advertisement avoidance in the imperial core.

on the china side, i do wonder if they'll run into imbalance issues if they don't promote some sort of more skilled (textiles? good historic background all over the place, but of course sweatshops loom large and china's absence of principles is not a desirable combination) production inside africa (say they'll want solar, but they can't sell enough stuff to get rmb to buy solar, thus imf, thus defaults)

Worrying and frankly puzzling development as the Venezuelan government announces a 6-week electricity rationing plan that establishes that the public sector is only going to work every other day (and a half-day at that). There's also a general call for conscious electricity use.

There are immediate Qs. The communique mentions low water levels in Western Vzla dams causing electricity issues, but the problem has more to do w/ transmission than generation. This is the area furthest away from the Guri Dam. Shutting down ministries in Caracas won't help much.

Furthermore, how much electricity will be saved by shutting down public administration buildings really? Many of them have central AC systems that can't be shut on and off all the time. Also, won't these workers go home to turn on their TVs and fans?

We would safely bet that a lot more electricity could be saved by telling monstrous shopping malls to close one hour earlier, but right now the private sector is the most sacred of cows. Getting efficiency demands on industries would also be a lot more useful.

The underlying concern, given the lack of information and figures too, is that there are major issues with the electrical grid and this is a kind of preemptive measure to lower demand. But again, if the goal is to reduce electricity consumption this won't do much.

Eduardo Bolsonaro Flees Brazil - Brian Mier Telesur

Son of former president faces possible treason charges for working with US politicians to attack Brazil's judiciary.

Article

Brazilian Liberal Party lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and South American representative for CPAC, took a leave of absence from Congress today and announced he will remain in the United States to escape "political persecution" and pressure U.S. officials to impose sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes—one of Brazil's 11 Supreme Court Ministers—in an attempt to keep his father out of jail.

It is no secret that Eduardo Bolsonaro has been close to Steve Bannon and other key figures in Donald Trump's circle since 2018. Similarities in billionaire-funded social media tactics used by Trump and the Bolsonaros are living testament to this, and the closeness that Eduardo has to leaders of the American far right is also demonstrated by his presence at the January 5, 2021, "war council" meeting in Washington, hosted by Mike Lindell on the eve of the U.S. Capitol invasion.

Eduardo Bolsonaro immediately swung into action, contacting friends in the Republican Party and private sector alike. The next day, Rumble and Truth Social filed a frivolous lawsuit against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who was in charge of the investigation against his father. On February 24, Republican Congressman Rich McCormick released a public letter to President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in which he called for punitive actions against Moraes, including "Magnitsky sanctions, immediate visa bans, and economic penalties."

On February 27, Workers' Party Congressmen Lindbergh Farias and Rogério Correia filed a criminal complaint with the Attorney General's Office against Eduardo Bolsonaro for conspiring against Brazil with members of a foreign government.

"The individual in question, completely disconnected from reality and acting against Brazil's national interests, is encouraging a foreign government to impose retaliatory measures against his own country and one of the justices of the Supreme Federal Court," reads a section of the complaint. Judging him a probable flight risk due to his network of connections in the American far right, they requested that the Federal Police confiscate his passport. Time has proven them correct, but the police did not act quickly enough.

On March 13, the net began to tighten around Jair Bolsonaro as the Attorney General's Office officially upheld the indictment against Bolsonaro and his cronies, after a procedural period in which they were allowed to present their defense arguments. The Supreme Court then set March 25 as the date for the final review of evidence before formally setting a trial date.

This put Eduardo Bolsonaro in a quandary. With a complaint already filed against him for illegally abusing the power of his office to lobby for intervention in Brazil's internal affairs by a foreign government—a crime so serious that, in theory, it could result in charges of treason—he had to choose between keeping his position as Congressman and complying with national security laws, or renouncing and moving to Florida, like so many right-wing Latin American politicians before him.

Bolsonaro is claiming his leave will be temporary, but going on leave of absence will not shield him from criminal prosecution for abuse of authority, crimes against the judiciary, and violation of national security laws. Like all Members of Congress, he enjoys a certain level of parliamentary immunity, but can still be investigated and tried by the same Supreme Court that he has been publicly attacking for the past five years. So if, as he announced on his social media today, his plan is to stay in the U.S. to find some way to "punish Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes," he will probably have to stay there for a long time. The question is, how much damage can he do to Brazil’s national sovereignty while he’s up there?

Trump to impose 25% tariff on countries that buy oil, gas from Venezuela - Reuters

Article

WASHINGTON/HOUSTON March 24 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that any country that buys oil or gas from Venezuela will pay a 25% tariff on any trades made with the United States. This "secondary tariff" will take effect on April 2, Trump said in a Truth Social post. Trump is imposing the move because, he said, Venezuela has sent "tens of thousands" of people to the United States who have a "very violent nature."

Earlier this month, Trump issued a 30-day wind down of a license that the U.S. had granted to Chevron (CVX.N), opens new tab since 2022 to operate in sanctioned Venezuela and export its oil, after he accused President Nicolas Maduro of not making progress on electoral reforms and migrant returns. Trump earlier this month invoked the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to justify the deportation of alleged members of Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua without final removal orders from immigration judges.

China, which already has been the subject of U.S. tariffs, is the largest buyer of Venezuela's oil, the OPEC member's main export. In February, China received directly and indirectly some 503,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Venezuelan crude and fuel, which represented 55% of total exports. Tariff impositions in China to imports of certain types of Venezuelan oil in past years led to a decline in the volume of Venezuelan crude received by Chinese buyers, which ultimately forced state company PDVSA to widen price discounts to continue sellin to its most important market.

Spain, Italy, Cuba and India are other consumers of Venezuelan oil. U.S. imports of the oil are set to end in early April unless Trump extends the wind down. There was no immediate response from Maduro's government to a request for comment.

Levies by China in past years on imports of certain types of Venezuelan oil led to a decline in the volume of Venezuelan crude received by Chinese buyers, which ultimately forced state company PDVSA to widen price discounts to continue selling to its most important market.

White House inadvertently texted top-secret Yemen war plans to journalist - The Guardian

Article

In extraordinary blunder top Trump cabinet members added Atlantic editor to chat discussing strikes on Houthis.

Senior members of Donald Trump’s cabinet have been involved in a serious security breach while discussing secret military plans for recent US attacks on the Houthi armed group in Yemen.

In an extraordinary blunder, key figures in the Trump administration – including the vice-president, JD Vance, the defence secretary Pete Hegseth, the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and the director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard – used the commercial chat app Signal to convene and discuss plans – while also including a prominent journalist in the group.

Signal is not approved by the US government for sharing sensitive information.

Others in the chat included the Trump adviser Stephen Miller; Trump’s chief of staff, Susie Wiles; and the key Trump envoy Steve Witkoff.

The breach was revealed in an article published on Monday by Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of the Atlantic magazine, who discovered that he had been included in a Signal chat called “Houthi PC Small Group” and realising that 18 other members of the group included Trump cabinet members.

In his account, Goldberg said that he removed sensitive material from his account, including the identity of a senior CIA officer and current operational details.

The report was confirmed by Brian Hughes, a spokesperson for the national security council, who told the magazine: “This appears to be an authentic message chain, and we are reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain.”

Hughes added: “The thread is a demonstration of the deep and thoughtful policy coordination between senior officials. The ongoing success of the Houthi operation demonstrates that there were no threats to troops or national security.”

Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he was unaware of the incident. “I don’t know anything about it. I’m not a big fan of the Atlantic,” Trump said.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, later released a statement saying: “President Trump continues to have the utmost confidence in his national security team, including National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.”

The incident is likely to further raise concerns over the Trump administration’s trustworthiness with intelligence shared by erstwhile allies – not least as Hegseth boasts at one stage of guaranteeing “100 percent OPSEC – operations security” while a celebrated journalist is reading his message.

The discussions seen by Goldberg include comments from Vance, who appeared unconvinced of the urgency of attacking Yemen, as well as conversations over what price should be expected of Europeans and other countries for the US removing the threat to a key global shipping route.

Security and intelligence commentators in the US described the breach of operational security as unprecedented – both for the use of a commercial chat service and for the inclusion of Goldberg.

In the US military, the highest political echelon and intelligence services operate under strict rules for communication of classified material and for the discussion of issues concerning operational security where lives and outcomes could be compromised by disclosure.

While Signal is regarded as a secure encrypted chat service, its weakness is that phones on which it is installed can themselves be vulnerable.

Among those aghast at the breach was the Democratic representative Pat Ryan, an army veteran who sits on the House armed services committee who described it using the second world war-era epithet “Fubar” – meaning “fucked up beyond all recognition”.

“If House Republicans won’t hold a hearing on how this happened IMMEDIATELY, I’ll do it my damn self.”

Shane Harris, a longtime national security reporter – formerly of the Washington Post and now with the Atlantic – wrote on BlueSky: “In 25 years of covering national security, I’ve never seen a story like this.”

Goldberg writes that he was initially dubious about whether the messages might be some kind of foreign disinformation operation, but became convinced they were genuine both because of the language and positions presented and because the plan discussed coincided with an actual attack on Yemen.

One striking exchange involved Vance and Hegseth making disparaging remarks about Europe.

“The account identified as ‘JD Vance’ addressed a message at 8:45 to @Pete Hegseth: ‘if you think we should do it let’s go. I just hate bailing Europe out again,’” Goldberg wrote. (The administration has argued that America’s European allies benefit economically from the US navy’s protection of international shipping lanes.)

Goldberg continues: “The user identified as Hegseth responded three minutes later: “VP: I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC. But Mike is correct, we are the only ones on the planet (on our side of the ledger) who can do this.

“Nobody else even close. Question is timing. I feel like now is as good a time as any, given POTUS directive to reopen shipping lanes. I think we should go; but POTUS still retains 24 hours of decision space.”

In reality, about 20 countries are involved in the mission to protect shipping from Houthi attacks including British warships.

As Goldberg became aware of the attack on Yemen taking place, he recorded how he went back to the Signal channel:

“‘Michael Waltz’ [US national security adviser] had provided the group an update. Again, I won’t quote from this text, except to note that he described the operation as an ‘amazing job.’’’

A few minutes later, [another individual wrote]: “A good start.”

Not long after, Waltz responded with three emojis: a fist, an American flag and fire. Others soon joined in, including “MAR”, [Marco Rubio]. He wrote: “Good Job Pete and your team!!” and “Susie Wiles”. She texted: “Kudos to all – most particularly those in theater and CENTCOM! Really great. God bless.”

How Much Does It Cost To Replace A King?

One million dollars — at least that is the number given in the Danish monarchy's yearly financial statement.

Last January the royals spent DKK 6.5 mln. on the bloodless transfer of power from the aging queen Margrethe Glücksburg to her son and hand-picked successor Frederik Montpezat. Most of the money comes from an extra one-time transfer from the state to cover the succession. In the Nordic hermit kingdom there is always extra money for celebrating a spoilt nepo-baby, unlike for education or healthcare.

The money was spent on such things as severance payments, office redecoration, new uniforms and on changing the design of monograms, orders and medals. The amount does not cover the money spent by other governmental bodies during the transition, such as the cost of security at public appearances or the cost of redesigning coinage.

Russia To Support the Black Sea Agreement When Acceptable Guarantees Exist - Telesur English

Article

The Kremlin demands the clearest, most concrete, verifiable, and enforceable guarantees before the conflict can be resolved. On Tuesday, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested that his country refused to approve a trilateral joint statement on Monday following negotiations between the U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian delegations in Riyadh.

“The U.S. wanted to issue some kind of joint statement, but we explained once again that both presidents… agreed to move forward in such a way that no more baseless documents would be approved,” he said, referring to the phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump that took place a week ago.

“We first agreed that, based on the agreement between Putin and Trump, U.S. and Russian experts would travel. But it seems that Washington is so eager to act that they decided something had to be formalized as soon as possible, so they invited the Ukrainians, who arrived a day earlier,” Lavrov said.

“It is no big secret that… the Americans wanted, in some way, to place the Ukrainians and Russians in adjacent rooms and organize shuttle diplomacy between them,” he added, insisting that Moscow wants Washington to ensure that Kyiv fulfills its commitments when signing a document with the opposing side in the conflict.

Lavrov emphasized that Russia demands “the clearest, most concrete, verifiable, and enforceable guarantees and mechanisms possible” before the Ukrainian conflict can be resolved. More specifically, Russia demanded “clear guarantees” from Ukraine to resume the implementation of the Black Sea Initiative, a truce that was in effect between June 2022 and July 2023 and was the main topic discussed in the Saudi capital.

“Our position is simple: we cannot trust that person’s word,” Lavrov said, referring to President Zelensky. Clear guarantees, he added, “can only result from an order from Washington to Zelensky and his team to do it this way and not any other way. I believe our American partners understood our message,” he concluded.

Sudan’s Military Recaptures Republican Palace Amid Ongoing Conflict - Telesur English

ArticleSudan’s military has achieved a significant milestone by recapturing the Republican Palace in Khartoum, a key stronghold previously held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Footage aired by Al-Arabiya on Friday revealed soldiers inside the partially ruined palace, celebrating their victory. The military, under the leadership of Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, has been making steady advances in recent months.

A Symbolic Victory Amidst a Prolonged War

The Republican Palace, a historic landmark dating back to British colonial rule, served as a heavily fortified RSF base. Its recapture is a symbolic triumph for the military, signaling its growing strength in the capital. However, the RSF continues to control significant territories, particularly in Sudan’s western Darfur region, underscoring the ongoing challenges in the conflict.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

Since the conflict erupted in 2023, over 28,000 lives have been lost, and millions have been displaced. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated further, with famine affecting large parts of the country. Rights groups and the United Nations have accused both the RSF and allied militias of targeting ethnic African communities, allegations that both sides deny.

The Road Ahead

While the capture of the Republican Palace is a morale boost for the military, it does not signify the end of the war. Fighting persists across Sudan, with the RSF maintaining its presence in key regions. The conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (who is already ineligible) becomes defendant in coup investigation. Bolsonaro complains after the verdict, accuses the Chinese government, the University of São Paulo, the Workers' Party (Lula's party) and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes of persecuting him.

Bolsonaro says that Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes personally attacked him by mentioning the day Bolsonaro got up on a stage and shouted that he was “infuckable”. And Bolsonaro also insists that there was fraud in the 2018 and 2022 elections, in the case of 2018, he says he won in the first round, but never presented proof. Bolsonaro also said that Lula da Silva and Vice President Geraldo Alckimin were terrorists because they had both met with members of Hamas in Iran. He also said that Lula sold Brazil to China and that he needs support from the United States.

He also accuses the Chinese government and the Brazilian left of having lobbied to block any attempt to grant amnesty to him, his sons and his allies who were arrested for the January 8th coup attempt. Bolsonaro once again calls Lula corrupt and says that Lula's voters are criminals who take government handouts instead of working. He also says that his last demonstration in Rio de Janeiro had 3.5 million people present there in favor of amnesty, while the University of São Paulo said there were only 18,000 people.

Sometimes it feels like he just wants to the word "tariff" as much as possible. The orangeman-in-chief announces "secondary tariffs" of 25% for any country that "purchases oil/gas from Venezuela." First off, Venezuela sells oil to private companies. And secondly, tariffs are imposed on imports, so it's not really those countries that end up paying for it.

So to see if we understand correctly, Trump is going to impose 25% tariffs on US imports of rice noodles from China because there are Chinese refiners that buy Venezuelan crude? We'd call it absurd, but in these times.

The plan is also very impractical to say the least. For example, Venezuelan crude reportedly gets shipped to Malaysia, rebranded and sent to China. Who gets slapped with tariffs in this case? And also how do you even prove it? Or maybe that's besides the point.

All in all, this is a scare tactic to drive up overcompliance and impose even more control over the oil market. Only companies that get US approval can buy Venezuelan crude. Could be a prelude to push for special deals for US corporations too. It could even be framed in Trump terms, "they're getting a great deal to help us cover the expenses on the migrant crackdown"

Fuck... I don't have the spare cash to stock up on ramen noodles.

Yes, it's beside the point. Trying to argue with the cop that he doesn't know the law. SMH.

He doesn't care. The law is just an excuse to do what he wants to do. He doesn't have to be consistent. He doesn't have to make sense. All he has to do is distract you with the pretense that there's some kind of rationale behind his actions.

Literally the whole basis for the liberal legal system. The rules are not for those who make/enforce them. They're for the dupes; the suckers.

Negro Veras Condemns Human Rights Violations in Bukele’s Prisons - Telesur English

Article

“There is no justification or excuse of any kind to validate the torture of Salvadoran and Venezuelan prisoners in Salvadoran prison hells,” reads the article. Dominican jurist Dr. Ramón Antonio (Negro) Veras, in his article “The Hell of Bukele’s Prisons,” analyzes the inhumane conditions to which Salvadoran and Venezuelan prisoners are subjected in El Salvador’s prisons.

Negro Veras condemns the prison policies of Bukele and Donald Trump, denouncing abuses, humiliations, and human rights violations. Below is the full article:

  1. Cruel and inhumane behavior, savagery, is being implemented in El Salvador’s prisons in plain sight, as if it were nothing.
  1. The infliction of harm upon another’s body, cruelty, is being carried out as if it were part of our peoples’ culture.
  1. No one is prepared to resign themselves to enduring physical or moral harm. Enduring or tolerating such treatment is not part of a normal way of life.
  1. What is happening to Salvadoran and Venezuelan prisoners in these modern-day versions of ancient Roman ergastula (slave prisons) is intolerable in the 21st century.
  1. The treatment of Salvadoran and Venezuelan prisoners is an offense to all humanity. It is a combination of vindictiveness, sadism, and brutal atrocity.
  1. Forcing a shackled man to kneel to have his head shaved is an atrocity, a bestial act, pure barbarism.
  1. Witnessing men forced to comply with degrading commands diminishes civilized humanity and contradicts our aspiration to live in a world of happiness and equal opportunity.
  1. The degradation and mortification of others for being undocumented should revolt any sensitive person opposed to ignominy.
  1. In Bukele’s prisons in El Salvador, there are nationals—victims of the system—and Venezuelans who lack opportunities in their homeland’s labor market.
  1. The treatment of impoverished humans labeled as antisocial in Salvadoran prisons must be rejected by all who oppose dehumanization in any form.
  1. Humiliating, degrading, ignominious, and infamous rulers like Bukele and Donald Trump must not be allowed to belittle, mistreat, insult, or wound the dignity of human beings.
  1. The atrocities committed against prisoners under Bukele and Donald Trump in Salvadoran prisons must be denounced, rejected, and unequivocally condemned.
  1. The hateful and cruel methods employed against prisoners in El Salvador must be censured as inhumane, disapproved for violating human rights, and repudiated for wounding the noblest sentiments of our peoples.
  1. There is no justification or excuse of any kind to validate the torture of Salvadoran and Venezuelan prisoners in these Salvadoran prison hellholes.
  1. Under no circumstances are horror, humiliation, atrocities, abominations, sinister acts, or repulsive methods acceptable to subjugate human beings.
  1. Never, ever, can humane principles be established in society through cruel measures. It is absurd to think happiness can be built at the expense of others’ misery.
