Didn't realize the difference in size. I wonder how a juvenile with similar mass would fare. I'd still give it the orca, sharks are a tasty treat to them.

[-] fritobugger2017@lemmy.world 19 points 3 months ago

Ocras travel in a pod with their family while Great Whites and other large sharks are loners.

[-] ours@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

And orcas are smart with complex hunting tactics.

50ish million years ago, some mammals sitting at the shores saw sharks and thought.. "I could fuck them up if I had a tail."

[-] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 14 points 3 months ago

Could they fuck sharks up?

[-] Klear@sh.itjust.works 24 points 3 months ago

Of course. They had tails.

[-] Pistcow@lemm.ee 65 points 3 months ago

"Great whites have been seen abandoning this prime feeding area when killer whales come too close for comfort—even if the mammals are simply passing through for a few hours. And the sharks do not just disappear for a day or two—they stay away for the entire season."

Had an argument with a guy at work as to whether a polar bear could beat a gorilla. He could not be persuaded that a 600kg apex predator would fuck up what is basically a fat guy who eats flowers...

[-] MrFinnbean@lemmy.world 28 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I think it depends where they fight.

If polar bear would fight in the jungle it would get hot and go to drink water. At that time it would be completelly open for suplex from the gorilla.

And if they were to fight on the ice sheet the gorilla would not have any trees where to hang tire swing and he would get depressed and unintrested to fight. So in the end it boils down to what kind of social services and safety nets are in the arctic and can they help primates like 1989 released Belgian techno anthem Pump up the jam can help humans.

If you put them in the same room, whoever gets to set the climate control wins.

[-] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 months ago

This is such an underrated comment lol

[-] SirHamlin@lemmy.world 13 points 3 months ago

Say what you want this is is an interesting thought, although the polar bear would most likely win because of its sheer mass. The gorilla has a lot going for it. A silverback can get to almost half that weight and has a greater bite force, intelligence, agility, and reach. They can also throw punches of up to 2300 lbs of force, which could easily break a bone or skull.

[-] JordanZ@lemmy.world 20 points 3 months ago

Polar bears are fucking massive. Not just in weight but everything. I give reach to the polar bear as well.

Some of the largest gorillas have a standing height of ~6 ft. A polar bears standing height is 10-11 ft. Their average shoulder height on four legs is 5ft. The bear out weighs a gorilla about 3-4x.

My money is on the bear. The gorilla would probably land some good hits but the second the bear can pin down its movement that fight is over.

[-] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The bear is in the foreground and the boat in the background, with probably at least 1.5-2m difference. Im aware polar bears are massive, but this image skews the relative size of the bear to seem larger than it actually is.

Also, have you seen a wet polar bear? They look significantly smaller when the fur is not fluffed.

[-] JordanZ@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I’ll agree that the diff in foreground is skewing it a bit. I’ll edit this because I think you mean 1.5-2m between the boat and bear. If the bear is normalish sized it should be about 1.5m(5ft) tall. The guy in the boat is probably similar but he is also standing on something at or below water level versus above it like the bear. Which also gives the illusion of the bear being bigger.

Polar bears change weight significantly throughout the year. So that can change what they look like wet as well. Their fluff will always be less.

The point I was trying to make… A gorilla’s strength is technically enough to lift a polar bear’s weight but it’s in the upper end of their strength. The bear is going to fight every step of the way and it’s not going to behave like an inanimate object. The bear is almost guaranteed to have one or two limbs on the ground at all times providing it leverage. Polar bears can lift approximately twice what a gorilla weighs. Add in its nearly 2x size advantage, 3-4x weight advantage, the thicker hide, ~10cm of fat insulation, 5-7cm claws, and carnivorous focused teeth…I don’t see it ending well for the gorilla.

[-] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

The next issue is training. Gorilla has none and the bear fights naturally.

[-] SirHamlin@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago

Gorillas fight a fair amount so to say they have no training isn't correct.

[-] roscoe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 3 months ago

I'm certainly no expert so I'd appreciate any Jane Goodall types that want to correct me, but aren't almost all gorilla fights for dominance until someone backs down so no one gets too fucked up and rarely dies? Whereas polar bears kill to live.

Also, gorillas may have a hell of a haymaker but polar bears have big nasty fuck you claws.

[-] SirHamlin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Agreed I think it'd be pretty crazy fight. If it didn't hurt the animals involved I'd pay-per-view it for sure. From what I read they fight for territory, family protection, securing a female and to keep their rank. However, I am not a gorilla expert but I did stay at a holiday and express once.

Mountain gorillas are definitely not fat.

[-] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 4 points 3 months ago

A more apt comparison would be a black bear vs a gorilla.

[-] ceenote@lemmy.world 27 points 3 months ago

It'd probably be pretty easy to convince them if the two were next to each other for scale. The biggest orcas can grow to twice as long as the average great white.

[-] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 21 points 3 months ago

I'm getting the gist of the meme, but the MMA reference... I don't get it.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 37 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I have no idea what the original was, but it became a format that people started using for memes. Here are a few random others:

That guy on the right's gonna be so thor that it hurts to breathe.

[-] someguy3@lemmy.world 12 points 3 months ago

Underneath the fat is a wall of abs.

[-] TrojanRoomCoffeePot@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

That clears things up lol Here's to hoping the meme trend doesn't die, this is a good one.

That guy on the right is huge.

[-] Olhonestjim@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

The one on the left is probably bigger. That's not a photo of a great white, but an artist rendition of a megalodon.

Would it win though? I have doubts. Especially in light of the macroraptorial sperm whales like Livyatan. But I'd never bet against a pod of orcas vs almost anything.

I'm not an MMA fan, but I still know the thing because I've seen Butterbean beat the shit out of Johnny Knoxville on Jackass. Pure muscle can sometimes look like fat.
