The timing might be a coincidence, but it feels like it's intended to take the wind out of Skyblivion's sails.

I hate Bethesda, so I hope this flops tbh.

[-] tim_curry@hexbear.net 20 points 3 weeks ago

I feel like skyblivion is gonna have more love and passion put into it. This will be broken shit day 1 then never get fixed

[-] Tiocfaidhcaisarla@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago

That's what I'm thinking. Skyblivion is going with concept art for things left out or things stated in the lore that the original ignored, like making the city of Leyawiin an actual port city that ships can actually pass through and expanding dungeons that are copy-pasted in vanilla. The things you get without the profit motive and with passion instead.

It's going to stutter to fuck on PC since it's UE5 too, probably.

Oblivion ported to Skyrim's engine, ability to travel between Skyrim and Cyrodil on one character, similar to Tale of two Wastes and Morroblivion and Skywind.

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

Skywind probably has a few years to go, I think the last update had them around 75% done.

[-] Tiocfaidhcaisarla@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

They've stated it will come out by the end of this year

[-] TC_209@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

That's Skyblivion, the fan-made Oblivion-in-Skyrim-SE's-engine mod; Skywind is the fan-made Morrowind-in-Skyrim-SE's-engine mod. Skywind has a little more left to be done compared to Skyblivion.

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

I actually just thought this was Skyblivion at first glance because it's very close to release.

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 10 points 3 weeks ago

Isn't the rumor that this will play pretty much like Oblivion with some changes? Skyblivion should be less worse.

[-] Dirt_Owl@hexbear.net 35 points 3 weeks ago

You can't remake Oblivion. Everything that makes that game worth playing is baked into it being made when it was, how it was.

[-] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 25 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah I'm not sure how to even imagine this game being remastered. Is the radiant AI still going to be there? Is it still going to have loads of half-baked quests? Are all the NPCs still going to be voiced by 5 male and 5 female voice actors?

And are mods even going to be a thing with this being Unreal Engine 5?

Oblivion was an amazing game for 16 y/o me

[-] Xenomorph@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago

Wanking and cranking my big ol' hog just thinking about the "better titties and ass for kawaii anime bodies" mods that're going to be worked on TODAY.

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

Can't wait to spend 2 weeks curating the perfect mod list and then playing for a couple hours before getting bored.

[-] Xenomorph@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

Full disclosure, I've beaten oblivion and I have some nostalgia for it but it's just so funny to me that bethsoft games 90% of the time are platforms for masturbation material.

[-] Bay_of_Piggies@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

The amount of community effort that has gone into perfecting breast physics for Skyrim is kind of impressive...

[-] Xenomorph@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

You made me google search skyrim jiggle and I found this gem:

Absolutely one of the most boring games of the series as well. It was fun the first time but as a Morrowind lover it was also a huge disappointment

[-] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

Apparently it's UE5 so fat chance on that.

[-] Bloobish@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago

UE5

Wait UE5!? Shit Bethesda just pissing on their modding community with that

[-] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

From what I've read, it's still running the old engine with UE5 only handling the visuals like the Ninja Gaiden 2 remake.

[-] Coca_Cola_but_Commie@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

On the one hand I think an Oblivion remake is doomed to fail. So much of the charm and character of the original comes down to the jank. A janky engine with janky gameplay and worse graphics, but also one of the best games I've ever played.

On the other hand, I'm really looking forward to playing some of this. Will probably try to pirate this one, though.

[-] Bloobish@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago

There's also the fact that compared to Morrowind or Skyrim Oblivion's setting is kinda mid at best and very generic fantasy with only some of that elder scrolls weirdness in the fringes

[-] Lussy@hexbear.net 8 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

When it came out, its genericness was kind of refreshing

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

I would just wait a few months for Skyblivion to come out.

[-] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

That comparison with the original kitty-birthday-sad They made it so much browner...

[-] kristina@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

yellow filter for mexico except for fictional nerd world

[-] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 11 points 3 weeks ago

Taking the saturated coloring and style of the original and making it look like CoD 37 was a choice

[-] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

People talk shit about Oblivion but watch the Wha' Happen on Demon's Souls and you realise Oblivion directly lead to Dark Souls and all related games. So few games can claim to have such an influence.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 13 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Apparently even the discworld golbins were made in part due to the goblins in oblivion. Terry prachett "researched" goblins for the book snuff by exploring the goblin caves in oblivion with the help of a mod he helped design lol

[-] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 10 points 3 weeks ago

So few games can claim to have such an influence.

There's many games that could claim to spawn subgenres lol. So many indies live under the shadow of Cave Story and Yume Nikki. Ultima Underworld is basically why FPS (and Souls-likes for that matter) even exist. Every RPG can ultimately be traced back to at least one of these games: Wizardry, Ultima, and Rogue.

[-] neo@hexbear.net 9 points 3 weeks ago

I love that that entire series is named after one really bad line read from one really bad The Ring based Dreamcast video game.

[-] tombruzzo@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

I didn't realise there was actual history to it. I thought it was just internet speak. It's surprisingly good for what it is as well, Matt actually talks to people and gets first party sources instead of just doing wikipedia level skims like that series could easily be. He's also been on podcast that position him as a comrade as well

[-] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 15 points 3 weeks ago

Make a new game! Don't just make 20 remasters of Skyrim and Oblivion each.

Why is it brown instead of green?

[-] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago

it's set in mexico

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 14 points 3 weeks ago

Ok but can you make your character a technicolor abomination?

[-] ObamaSama@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

All I care about is what it’s running on, would love essentially just a 64 bit engine upgrade. You can already mod the shit of the original to look nearly as good but it’s unstable as hell. Curious to see how substantial the combat and leveling changes end up being as well

[-] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 16 points 3 weeks ago

I was betting that they shuffled it off to a studio somewhere in SEA or eastern Europe to rake in the nostalgia bucks before I even looked up the name at the top of the screenshot.

Virtuos is a Singapore-based company that provides game development and art production services for AAA consoles, PC, and mobile titles.
