"don't worry ma'am, we got this"!? Winning teams in any spoort aggressively target any area in which they are deficient, even after games they win, they don't just kick back after a loss and keep doing the exact same thing they've been doing!

A year ago the NIH estimated that 65k people had been killed, almost double the 37k estimated by the Gaza ministry of health at the time, a difference caused by the GMOH only counting identifiable bodies and not being able to track missing persons. Since then, the GMOH's ability to count deaths has only gotten worse and there's been a famine - it wouldn't surprise me if the total death count by this point surpassed 100k.

top officials have discussed whether they might need to borrow money this year to keep paying the bills.

No mass layoffs? No outsourcing to cheaper countries? I guess neoliberal policies are only for the poors.

the hit Netflix series Fauda, which dramatizes the actions of an elite "Israeli" undercover unit known as mista'arvim. These units operate disguised as Palestinians, often carrying out lethal operations in the occupied West Bank.

A TV show whose premise is that the main characters do one of the most cut-and-dry warcrimes there is.

Yet another arena where America is simply surrendering to China, although we're also plugging our ears and going "LA LA LA LA LA" by not allowing their cars into our country to compete with ours.

Finally god damn. They've needed to do this since I was a kid.

...and now that they've finally gotten around to it, it's past time to phase out nickels and dimes.

It's a pretty common cultural shock story, but it has to do with the fundamentals of how the American and Soviet economies were organized. The Soviet economy projected demand and sent exactly the amount of food they expected to need to a grocery store, which meant that the people shopping there all naturally adapted to the rhythm of showing up on the day things were delivered and getting in line to get the first pick, while in America it became commonplace for grocers to overstock and throw out excess because there's a psychological effect that makes people buy more when they see more. You can guess which one is far more wasteful and doesn't really result in a better outcome for anyone beyond being able to say "look at this decadent cornucopia!"

If we took jury representation seriously, every jury would be a randomly-selected representative example of the population, jury duty would be remunerated very well and there would be stuff like childcare for jurors in place, hell you shouldn't even need to spend gas to get to the courthouse the court should send a van to pick you up and feed you three hots while you're there.

Instead we've got a system where one of the best ways not to get picked is to show up to the court wearing glasses and reading a book while you're waiting because lawyers will see that, assume you're smart, and motion to get you removed from the jury pool.

What was "the war" in Pokemon? Lt Surge fought in it, and apparently Pokemon did too, but there hasn't been any prequel game that explores it.

But here's an interesting reading: so in early Pokemon content guns were a thing, but later on it was decided that guns don't exist in the Pokeverse. This could be explained in-universe - perhaps guns were a common sight at one time, but they've faded out as the Pokeverse's society has gotten more utopian. This can also be seen in the schemes of the Pokeverse's organized crime - Giovanni and Team Rocket were up to some bad stuff, racketeering, gambling, poaching, but as you go forward in time the worst crimes committed by society's anti-social element are tagging and petty larceny.

Could it be that "the war" was the final war, and Lt Surge was a member of the People's Army that finally defeated the bourgeoisie, allowing for the creation of utopian post-capitalist societies where lotteries are held just for fun, kids can go on cross-country trips unsupervised, and the only vestige of currency is play money paid out just for participating in society and used to buy non-essential things because all of the necessities of life are distributed for free?

It's not impossible!
