Japan (Has some of the most strict gun laws in the world): Guy makes a handmade Looney Tunes ass double barrel doohickey, successfully pulls off an assassination

America (has the most readily available guns in the world with some of the most freedom to practice using them): Can not even do one successful assassination

I wrote up the following response as an answer to @join_the_iww’s really great question of: ”Do Americans realize that the majority of people ruled over by Israel are not Jewish?” and thought it might have some interesting standalone/discussion value so I’m crossposting the comment here:

I don’t think pro-Israel Americans know this and I also don’t think pro-Israel Americans would really care all that much/believe you if you told them.

The average American who supports Palestine is relatively well read on the issue, or at least knows that fundamentally what Israel is doing to the Palestinian people is wrong. They are smaller in number than the Pro-Israel crowd but have way more passion for the issue.

Whereas

The average American who supports Israel does so because that’s what the default opinion is supposed to be. They know little to nothing about the situation on the ground. The most the average Pro-Israel American can tell you is: ”Israel is our closest ally in the Middle East.” and ”Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East.” and they don’t particularly care about these issues all that much. Generally, they aren’t vocal about the issue at all unless some outside force intentionally riles them up, but the support does quickly as interest wanes.

That’s why I think this moment for Palestine is huge, but even bigger than most people realize as it pertains to the future of young people in America. The media and government both tried very hard to get American conservatives and liberals aligned and galvanized on the issue by stoking the coals that burn under each side and generally grab their respective interests.

The media/government tried to galvanize liberals through the traditional method of pinkwashing, espousing Israel’s so-called liberal social beliefs, and advocating for a two state solution so that Israel can appear to no longer be oppressing Palestinians.

The media/government tried to galvanize conservatives via Islamophobia, “invasion” rhetoric, freedom and democracy rhetoric, badass military rhetoric, etc.

Historically this has worked well enough, even with younger demographics, but this time it fell flat on its face because the United States and Israel are incapable of adapting this strategy in a way that effectively utilizes the historic method of suppressing information about what exactly Israel is doing. The average nominally pro-Israel American just stopped caring and the issue lost their attention at the same speed it always has. This differs immensely from the pro-Palestine side, which not only sees the ongoing issue with Israel’s actions, but also the issue of the combined effort the media and government are utilizing to suppress the issue/obscure the truth as much as possible.

I may be jumping to conclusions when I say that Tiktok has been an enormous catalyst in regards to galvanizing young people to be pro-Palestine, but at the very least it has been an incredible tool to study this conflict as a social trend amongst its primary user base. Pro-Palestinian content on Tiktok occurs at a rate 2000% higher than pro-Israeli content. A recent study, conducted by computer scientists at Northeastern University who specialize in mass online sociological patterns, determines that “The pattern of pro-Palestinian posts is consistent with a prolonged social movement… while the pattern of pro-Israeli posts is typical of what follows a major news event.” and we can see that demonstrated in the way support for Palestine has remained steadfast no matter what major news event the combined propaganda departments of the United States and Israel try to throw at it. This is an absolutely unprecedented shift.

In my opinion, when accounting for the dual issue of the Israel-Palestine conflict and subsequent obvious bias/obfuscation regarding the conflict, this is potentially the largest mass deprogramming/radicalization event for young Americans I can think of in any stretch of American history. I do not see any major event that touches the speed and depth of which young people have turned against a combination of domestic, international, and media dealings AND narratives. I do not believe that even the events surrounding the George Floyd Uprising (and potentially even the Vietnam war) will have such lasting impacts as the shift in young peoples’ opinion on the issue of Israeli settler-colonialism and apartheid; in each of those corresponding issues, never was the entire government, its international allies, and private media propaganda so completely aligned while being so thoroughly rebuked.

On March 10th, several days after Incognito Market was assumed to be shut down or no longer be processing transactions, the site posted a message to its homepage that reads as follows:

”Expecting to hear the last of us yet? We got one final little nasty suprise for y'all. We have accumulated a list of private messages, transaction info and order details over the years. You'll be surprised at the number of people that relied on our "auto-encrypt" functionality. And by the way, your messages and transaction IDs were never actually deleted after the "expiry"...”

”SURPRISE SURPRISE !!! Anyway, if anything were to leak to law enforcement, I guess nobody never slipped up. We'll be publishing the entire dump of 557k orders and 862k crypto transaction IDs at the end of May, whether or not you and your customers' info is on that list is totally up to you. And yes... YES, THIS IS AN EXTORTION !!! As for the buyers, we'll be opening up a whitelist portal for them to remove their records as well in a few weeks.”

”Thank you all for doing business with Incognito Market”

Exit scams are not uncommon on dark web markets, but this one is particularly large and openly threatening compared to most. Incognito Market requires the loading of cryptocurrency to a site-based wallet, which can then be used for in-house transactions only. All cryptocurrency on the site was seized from user’s wallets, estimated to be anywhere from $10 million to $75 million. After seizing the cryptocurrency wallets of all of the marketplace’s users, the site now openly explains that it will publish transactions and chat logs of users who refuse to pay an extortion fee. The fee ranges from $100 to $20,000, a volume based 5 tier buyer/seller classification.

Incognito Market also now has a Payment Status tab, which states ”you can see which vendors care about their customers below.” and lists the some of the market’s largest sellers. Sellers which have allegedly paid the extortion fee to not have their transaction records released are displayed in green, while those who have not yet paid are displayed in red.

Additionally, in a few weeks the site claims it will have a “whitelist portal” which would allow buyers to wipe their transactions and re-encrypt chat records.

Whoever is behind the website must be extremely, extremely confident in their anonymity, already working with government agencies, or both, because a bounty on this person is likely worth millions.

Nooooooo aha these movies aren’t propaganda I super promise

Fun Newsweek article about this:

At last year's D23 expo, Disney announced a new character would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe—Israeli superhero Sabra.

Debuting in 2024's Captain America: New World Order alongside Anthony Mackie, Sabra's inclusion has been divisive from the start. However, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has deepened the issue and created more potential pitfalls for the studio.

On October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, which subsequently fired airstrikes on Gaza. At least 1,400 people have been killed in Israel as of October 30, while more than 8,000 have been killed in Gaza, according to the Associated Press, citing the Israeli military and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry respectively.

"The Sabra character, when juxtaposed with Captain America, unavoidably amplifies nationalist and political ideologies and convictions, and could inadvertently exacerbate tensions in the Middle East," Deepak Sarma, professor at the College of Arts and Sciences at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, told Newsweek.

Sabra first popped up in The Incredible Hulk in 1980. A mutant with enhanced strength and speed, the character is also an agent for Mossad, the real-life Israeli secret service. Her real name is Ruth Bat-Seraph, while the codename Sabra means "a person born in Israel."

In Captain America: New World Order, Sabra will be played by Shira Haas. The 28-year-old Israeli actress is best known for starring as Esther Shapiro in the Netflix mini-series Unorthodox, which focuses on a Hasidic Jewish woman who moves abroad to escape an arranged marriage.

Sabra was originally envisioned as an Israeli counterpart of Captain America, and in early editions, the Jewish superhero wore a white bodysuit emblazoned with a blue star of David. She is trained in hand-to-hand combat and has the power to help others heal more quickly.

"Of course, Sabra would be considered offensive by Palestinians, Arabs, Muslims and their supporters given the complexities of nationhood and nationalism in the Middle East," Sarma said. "But the current conflict heightens tensions significantly."

Eliza Jane Schneider, a voiceover artist and activist whose Freedom of Speech project gives voices to diverse backgrounds, agrees.

"It's potentially offensive, because spotlighting an Israeli superhero, specifically an Israeli intelligence anti-terrorist, on this global scale, with the wide reach that Marvel has, risks further polarization," she told Newsweek.

"It could be seen as Marvel and the United States supporting and aggrandizing Israel's policies."

In her first appearance, Sabra attacks The Hulk, whom she believes is assisting an Arabic militant group. When a Palestinian boy is caught up in the battle between Sabra, The Hulk and the terrorists, then dies, The Hulk declares: "Boy died because boy's people and yours both want to own land! Boy died because you wouldn't share!"

Of course, the long-running conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is significantly more complicated than that, and is just one reason why the source material is controversial.

Although the death of the Palestinian boy supposedly leads to a more compassionate Sabra, the transformation doesn't last for long. Throughout her tenure, Sabra holds negative views toward Arabic characters, including fellow superhero Arabian Knight, whose stereotypical portrayal comes with its own issues.

In the comic New Warriors (1995), her motivations are somewhat retconned and less nationalistic, with the character supposedly disliking Palestinians because her son was killed in a terrorist attack.

Throughout her comic appearances, Sabra's commitment to the Israeli government and Mossad doesn't waver. During one particularly grueling battle with Sabra, The Hulk thinks to himself: "I'm not fighting a woman. I'm fighting the Zionist recruiting board."

Sabra's nationalism is not unique in Marvel comics. The 1960s introduced readers to Red Guardian—the communist Russian version of Captain America, played by David Harbour in Black Widow (2021)—while other cultural counterparts include Captain Britain, who was gifted magic powers by King Arthur's sorcerer pal Merlin.

Disney could flesh out Sabra's character, so she is less dependent on offensive stereotypes, as it did with Red Guardian. Disney According to Schneider, Marvel could give Sabra the same treatment it gave Red Guardian, fleshing her out into a more complex character that doesn't rely on stereotypes.

"Perhaps this is an opportunity for a character to experience life and love from both sides of this conflict," she said.

"Filmmakers could make it unclear throughout the first three-quarters of the film which side our beloved, nuanced, flawed but altruistic new superheroine is on—question her own allegiances, swayed more by universal love and desire to protect all children and civilians on both sides of the conflict, thereby acknowledging the inherent value of human life across groups."

Sabra was already a controversial character in the 1980s, but the current fighting has put the Israeli-Palestinian conflict front and center once again, making her inclusion in the upcoming movie even more divisive.

"It is not hard to imagine protests at movie theaters or even the banning of the film in Arab or Muslim countries," Sarma said.

To offset the character's contentious history, Schneider hopes Disney will explore Sabra's positive attributes, along with developing her relationship with the Israeli government and Palestinians.

"Sabra has the ability to transfer her life energy to other people, the ability to grant superpowers to other people, and regeneratively heal," she said. "She is in a perfect position to promote love, forgiveness, humanity, peace and positive change."

A Marvel Studios spokesperson has previously indicated that such concerns are being considered.

"Filmmakers are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago," the spokesperson told CNN in September 2022, adding that characters in Marvel Cinematic Universe "are always freshly imagined for the screen and today's audience."

Uri Fink, a leading Israeli comic book artist, has also questioned whether some critics' fears that the character would be presented as pro-Israel would turn out to be accurate.

"Sabra went on to feature in some stories that weren't very pro-Israel, it was already weird back then. So I don't think this would augur well for how she'd be depicted by Marvel now that they've gone woke," he told the Israeli outlet Ynet.
