The pirate life is making a comeback and the chuds are landlubbers.

A major chunk of the Gen Xers I know these days have the piracy fire sticks and a lot of those younger than that are returning to their janky tube sites and torrent trackers.

Nintendo might be able to essentially end physical game media to fight piracy but the video execs will never be able to stop screen capture.

totally. I wonder if it will make streaming programming even shittier over time, because the segment of paying subscribers will dictate popularity metrics.

and, essentially, paying subscribers are increasingly those poor souls lacking the skills and bravery for living one's best life on the high seas. 🏴‍☠️🦜🌊

I thought the term "tube sites" only referred to porn sites?

[-] mrfugu@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago

nah you got “youtube” first of all and afaik the term “tube” originates from old tvs (the T in CRT). People used to call television “the tube.”

Yes, the term was coined ultimately in reference to YouTube, and YouTube was itself ultimately named in reference to CRT — but if you type "tube site" on Wikipedia it redirects you to the article "Porn 2.0", and if you search "tube site" on Wiktionary it only lists a pornographic definition, and anecdotally I have personally only ever seen the term used in reference to porn.
