My mother in law is completely addicted to MSNBC, and since she retired a few years ago she's watching that shit like 10 hours a day. She gets hyped as hell about all these motions and it's straight up the only thing she's able to talk about at all anymore. My partner and I have tried to get her active in literally anything so she doesn't just watch TV all day but nothing sticks. Like we spent a ton of money to have her antique family piano repaired (she was always talking about how she'd love to play again but just can't find a good piano tech) and I'm not sure that she's ever touched it. Now she wants to learn guitar. Recently she told us that she is getting out of the house more though! ..... because she signed up for free adult university classes. Political science of course. She's more obnoxious than she's ever been about politics.
Give her Blackshirts and Reds or Women, Race and Class. Whichever one you think might have a bigger impact.
Er no wait, probably too advanced. Lies My Teacher Told Me and People's History of the USA would probably be better.
Yeah we've recommended (purchased for her) so many books over the years but it's clear she's never going to crack one open. We have spoon fed her basic concepts that she will seemingly understand and completely agree with in the moment, but 10 minutes of MSNBC later it's like the conversation never happened because they're totally going to nail Trump this time, and we've really got to do something about all the shoplifting. We mostly just try to avoid politics with her, but it's fucking impossible because cable news is like her entire conception of the world now.
Has she heard about that hot new True Crime podcast called Blowback? ๐
look I appreciate what you're trying to do here, but she's not going to budge on her political views lol. We'd really just like to get her away from politics entirely for the sake of her relationship with my partner (and everyone else around her), but since that doesn't look possible either we just try to not engage with it because even our dissent is taken as a green light to exclusively talk about cable news politics.
The only news I ever remember my mom watching was E! News before becoming a ride or die Trump supporter. My sister had to explain the electoral college to her and why her vote wouldn't actually matter outside of swing states when she was in her 50s.
