Gender is bullshit anyway. Associating behaviours and fashion to it is an incorrect way to think. Instead - consider a more deconstructive approach, you are a unique human with unique experiences and relationship to weird societal hangups, it doesn't need to be more complex than that.

"gender" dysphoria is real but likely a neurological condition related to birth sex and brain development than anything else, certainly nothing to do with gender.

It makes the difference preventing the deaths of the animals

I don't care about that. Fundamentally in my view it's okay to kill animals to eat them because they're tasty. I don't think you can really change that view.

and reduces water and land usage

I'll be happy to make that sacrifice, but the impact to my quality of life will be disproportional compared to the actual savings incurred since compared to a billionaire I don't consume or produce much environmental damage in the first place.

I'm already doing the most environmentally-sound thing one can do - be child-free. I'm trans so it was gonna happen either way but I'll claim the points. I don't drive either, not that I wouldn't want a gas guzzling F-150 I don't need to barrel down the crossing by the school in and grind away the plebs below, who wouldn't? So that's a helluva sacrifice too.

Therefore I see no reason why I should have to do anything to cover for them until they stop polluting. Fundamentally I see no reason to "save the earth" if we don't have an egalitarian world worth fighting for, and all indicators point in the opposite direction at the moment.

You’re not giving up anything when you stop eating meat

False, eating meat is one of a few good things about being alive. You may not see it that way but it's subjective. To me it's a very significant sacrifice and a reduction in quality of life.

it’s quite the opposite really you’re much healthier on a whole foods plant-based diet

I don't really care. I'm already doing far too much for my "health", just so the bastards up top can exploit me into my elderly years instead of being some lead poisoned boomer who just chills out off their infinite house price raises and pensions going to conspiracy conventions or whatever it is they do.

Do not base your character by comparing yourself to the most morally reprehensible in our society.

There's nothing morally wrong with eating meat in my view to start with so I don't view any of this as morally reprehensible, it's a sacrifice and a pretty big one, and living the working class life I already got jack and shit, so its not unfair that we get our fair share first. Then I'll buy into sacrifices for a world worth saving.

Or you can eat meat and tackle inequality. Doesn't make a difference, ultimately, does it?

And ultimately it makes sense that if one is sacrificing eating meat for the environment, then it should be those that do the most harm to said environment that make said sacrifice first.

I got that, but is there something specific in the news with TERFs being forced or? Some kind of new law by them that backfired or?

Otherwise this is just kinda dumb NGL.

[-] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago

Damn a Lemmy TERF. You lost or something sweaty?

They're not farmer protests. They're Jeremy-Clarkson-wants-to-keep-his-property-because-the-government-actually-taxed-the-rich-for-once protests where he gaslit some farmers for optics. This is all about tax avoidance and a closed loophole. Do not let them change the framing.

A hundred percent so. Lots of people want Lemmy to grow but I think we're already huge, so much so I feel the need to trim some of the fat.

[-] LainTrain@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 days ago

I've been considering it also lately. Either the instance grew or the userbase just changed somehow or maybe I only just noticed but LW just feels like it's culture is way shittier recently.

I mean, maybe check the sources yourself, they're pretty clearly linked and nicely arranged in a doc for you right under the video if you've been living under a rock and unfamiliar with the creator or have some healthy doubts about the validity of the claims presented?

Maybe it's better than pure dismissal out of your own ignorance.

It's astounding that here I am being humble enough to link a good explainer on the topic rather than being arrogant enough to link the primary sources as if I'm an expert on the subject capable of fully interpreting multiple papers, and here you are, dismissing one of the most well-respected science communicators on the planet today as a "YouTube cartoon".

Is this why we live in a post-truth world now, where folks with zero media literacy or critical thinking ability, think there is no difference between this and PragerU or between The Sun and The Guardian or Lemmy and Twitter? It's all just "cartoons" or "news" innit? All just "opinions" and "views". All just "politics bollocks" and "social media" and "content".

And yeah I am strawmanning and projecting and whatnot, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong, it is not how fallacies work.

No wonder the country is in the fucking gutter.

P.S.

Helped you eat less

I've not had such problems any time recent, thank you very much Mr. Ad Hominem.

This is a good thing, I'm glad the public is accepting of this.

It's time we move away from the Christian work ethic view of obesity as a personal and moral failing and follow the science - if you are fat, it's mostly genetic because you are simply wired to be hungry more than your friends and these drugs fix that.

https://www.healthline.com/health/obesity/is-obesity-genetic-or-environmental#genetics

According to a 2022 clinical reviewTrusted Source, more than 500 obesity-related genes have been identified in humans.

These genes can affect body weight in many ways. They can create changesTrusted Source in insulin metabolism, inflammatory responses, blood pressure, fat deposition, and the level of circulating fat in the bloodstream. They can cause you to want to consume more energy (i.e., food) but can prevent you from using it effectively.

Without them your choice is to be miserable (with all the MH outcomes that follow this long-term like depression) and hungry all the time, or to be fat and miserable due to obesity related illness like heart disease etc.

Instead of all that, we can simply block excess hunger, a trait once probably evolutionarily crucial yet no longer useful in the world of excess.

I'm someone who was overweight all my life until I started vaping, nicotine appetite suppression changed my life, I'm now skinny and by many of my ex-partners' description pretty fit, to be treated not as some fat slob but as a human being that's actually pleasant and even attractive is life-changing to my mental health and self-esteem, no longer is my body some wreck beyond salvation out of the gate but something I care about and for.

I hope for the same feeling for many others may come thanks to these exciting developments.

And not to get too soapboxy, but as usual, it turns out that blaming the "sick" for the "disease" was wrong and telling people to "eat less" or "exercise more" is as nonsensical as telling someone with ADHD to simply "focus" and "create habits" instead of giving them the amphetamine they need to make up for the low levels of dopamine they have so they can do these things - or even this country's favourite passtime of denying gender dysphoria exists and that puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries fix it with non-existant regret rates, as if simply fixing a patient's problem with treatment is a crime.

"Bad relations" is how you can put it and just shut down further questions.

RetroArch never works right. Even once you get past the cores and all the other stupid bs, once you get to setting up the controls it never works right, most buttons just do not work in game, if they even work in the menus.

So many years, so much effort, all wasted.

It's still so much easier to keep BlastEm, Snes9x, Duckstation and whatever else installed, so much faster to set up controls and most of the time you don't even need to as everything works out of the box.

And yet plebbit will say nuhhh use muh libretro cores!!!!1 so heckin' wholesome Keanu chungus 100!!! I love my wife's boyfriend!!!!111 Thanks Reddit!!!!!

Why is the solarpunk memes community on this instance filled with such massively anti-left folks?

I've found lots of examples in C of programs illustrating buffer Overflows, including those of pointer rewrites which has been of great help in understanding how a buffer overflow works and memory safety etc. but I've yet to be able to find an example illustrating how such a buffer overflow can rewrite a pointer in such a way that it actually results in code execution?

Is this just not a thing, or is my google-fu rust y? Tried ChatGPT and my local Mistral and they both seem unable to spit out precisely what I'm asking, so maybe I'm wording this question wrong.

If anyone in here knows, could point me in the right direction? Thanks y'all btw love this community 🧡

Hey y'all

So I've been a big anti-Wayland shill around here but decided to finally give it a shot, I installed Debian 12 with GNOME, and can't seem to get Plank working.

Without the Plank dock, GNOME is unusable, and KDE refuses to autostart Guake (does not save the setting in autostart), and when it works it seems broken (stuck to the left side of the screen).

These are fundamental apps to me for any decent Linux laptop use. What gives? Is there an alternative?

Just got a steam deck and immediately checked out the desktop mode, and I was somewhat surprised to see KDE and pacman as opposed to GNOME and apt, I have nothing against the former though a strong preference for the latter, anyone know why Volvo went in this direction?
