I know this is basically the same as burning money, but I found this funny and I've got $7.99 burning a hole in my pocket...

I'm not familiar with eLife but this publication model is crazy. (They aren't giving editors the choice to reject/publish -it's all published with open access reviews and an article classification by the editors of general quality (based on reviews). Surprising that they didn't see a change in volume or submissions or decline in reviews.

Went to the Mucha museum in Prague a few years back - it's small, but theres some great pieces in there. Would definitely recommend it.

Yep, and I'm still never buying a Playstation. Not worth chasing exclusives when there are plenty of good games on PC.

My Campy Halloween Movies (sh.itjust.works)

I'm doing a month-long series of campy, classic and unique horror movies. I'm pretty liberal in what gets included, trying for a lot of variety. I'm particularly a fan of spooky comedies (like the Burbs), and generally avoiding big franchise horror series to see more unique stuff.

I'm enjoying seeing so many movies I would never come across any other way, even if many of them aren't all that great. So far my favorite is probably Cabin in the Woods or Happy Death Day.

Anything I should add to the list?

Watched (in order)

The Burbs Batman Death Becomes Her Slotherhouse Cabin in the Woods Happy Death Day Llamageddon The Thing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies The Final Girls Attack of the Killer Donuts Drag Me to Hell Ernest Scared Stupid Final Girl Killer Sofa

From the wiki article :

Perelman resigned from his research post in Steklov Institute of Mathematics and in 2006 stated that he had quit professional mathematics, owing to feeling disappointed over the ethical standards in the field. >

Anybody have any idea what the ethical standards might be that he's referring to? Not sure if there's a scandal or something or just an overall sense of displeasure with the field.

The FTC has been CRUSHING IT under the current leaders by actually enforcing existing rules. I hope Kamala tells those donors to pound sand.

If they wanted to make this movie a success they should have had ONE PERSON from the writing, directing and (most importantly) casting team sit down and play the games.

Finally some good news on a studio closure. So glad for the team at Tango they found someone to take them on.

If you haven't watched the olympic break dancing competition, do yourself a favor and check it out. The woman competing for Australia might be the best thing I've seen so far.

So, anybody know a good launcher to use once Nova goes offline?

They lost me the second they announced the cast. It's like the people making the movie never once opened up a single one of the games.

Kevin Hart as Roland is just infuriating. It shows they had no intention of treating the IP with any level of respect and they just wanted a campy action comedy with famous actors.

"If we expect all games to attract players indefinitely, Buckley says, 'we're just going to get more of these really soulless live service games that come out and get shut down nine months later, 12 months later, because they're not making enough money.'"

We need more developers talking like this.

Left the original title from the article for consistency, but article suggests that they may not be shutting down and are instead restructuring.

Yeah, but the non-tech savvy business leaders see they can generate code with AI and think 'why do I need a developer if I have this AI?' and have no idea whether the code it produces is right or not. This stat should be shared broadly so leaders don't overestimate the capability and fire people they will desperately need.

One already has, sort of anyway. Her occupation, city of residence, and employer were shared on TV and she received phone calls right after asking if she was on the jury. Yesterday she asked to be excused out of fear for her safety.

What I don't get is how no company seems to have worked out a legitimately good service and maintenance model for tech products. Fairphone hasn't invented the wheel here. They're going to make money on maintenance, parts and repair.

I would think there would be lowered costs involved in not having to push out a new product every 6 months and market it to customers who just bought something less than a year ago.

It sounds like things are going well for this guy and that is great and all, but how much would we honestly expect to hear if it wasn't going well?

This story is circulating all the media outlets and feels more like PR than a legit example of how this procedure is actually going to work for most people.

"they intend to re-create events not captured by camera using generative AI,"

That's going to cause all sorts of problems.
