Nothing says this film is doing well like changing the title after months of advertisement campaigns.

Bit annoyed at this because I've yet to see it.

Also I feel like it would've been better to keep it as thunderbolts* that way the rename happens during the film as you watch it instead.

So if I wanted to watch this now. Am I searching for "New Avengers" or "The Thunderbolts"?

it wasnt a good movie. It wasnt rip roaring fun, it was dumb and tedious, and a waste of 12 dollars.

[-] bitwolf@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Noted I will watch it for free when I'm extremely bored

Cptn America is suddenly white again and they only mention Steve Rodgers as the previous cptn America.

and 3 of the "new avengers" are russians?

And they all say they have done terrible things and hate themselves, but that whats important is helping people. And at one point Valentina says "when you have been around as long as me you understand theres only bad people and worse people, call me when you want to join the real world"

Sounds like the zionists who titled the last wretched avengers movie 'a new world order' and tried to use 15 minutes of that movie to be a backstory of a new israeli superhero 'sadaf' are still at work at marvel. (until a aflurry of last minute edits that left that movie a wierd hacked together clusterf****)I hope the entire Marvel company goes under along with tesla for parroting far right and zionist ideology.

Wait, I thought the movie was doing well? I haven’t seen it yet, but reading the article it seems like this is more of a PR stunt and marketing gimmick to align with what happens in the movie. Apparently it’s revealed they are the new Avengers, so spoilers for everyone (including me) who hasn’t seen it yet I guess.

Yeah, with the asterisk in the title and the discussion about it, I would think that this was the marketing plan from the start. The movie’s performance may have affected when exactly they decided to pull the trigger on the rebrand though.

Rumor has it that Marvel was worried it would bomb, and naming it "New Avengers" would put them in an awkward position moving forward. Thunderbolts was the backup-insurance-title basically.

Now that the movie seems to be doing well, it's getting its proper title.

The group rename is an in-movie plot point...

[-] thisisdee@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Yeah I thought it is doing well. Reviews have been pretty good and word of mouth seems to be decent as well. This is 100% a spoiler for those who haven’t watched it. I did think it’s quite soon from its release to them revealing it publicly like this though

[-] kreskin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I saw it. It was decidedly mediocre. Roughly equivalent to the last one.

Fortunately I'm not invested in the MCU as much as I once was. Probably worth chucking the spoiler in some spoiler tags though?

Actually maybe not? At this point I don't know..

Thunderbolts*

*name temporary

[-] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Like the Washington Football Team or Utah Hockey Club, we’re just waiting for the focus group data to refine the name

So... Nothing's changed since Endgame?

For anyone confused: this isn’t coming out of nowhere,

minor movie spoiler

it’s just the marketers trying to squeeze attention out of a spoiler at the end of the movie. They want to have their cake and eat it too by teasing the asterisk in the title as a mystery, then milking the reveal after a few days now that they assume anyone who cares about having that sort of thing spoiled has already seen it.

It’s still a strange marketing choice for a fairly successful movie a few days after release.

[-] jsomae@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

Odd. I think an asterisk in a movie title is pretty eye-catching.

[-] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago

Hey, don't worry. Apparently, low-effort videogame movies are about to take over for the next 15-20 years, thanks to CHICKEN JOCKEY.
