It's really getting to the point where people who know to stay off social media, pirate their stuff, and never post their name or anything personal online are gonna be living in a different PLANET as the people that are ok with this.

[-] Tabitha@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago

I already feel like I live on a different planet, like I go online and you'll see people with 1/10th my income spending 10x my restaurant budget (which is separate than my grocery budget) on fast food delivery. A youtuber I follow regularly has videos where people buy $100 pieces of artisanal waste directly from sleazy tiktokers. I see people throwing away valueable things (like you could sell or donate) all the time. Any money I might or may not have saved over my years of employment was going to be worthless anyways after the next austerity or when climate collapse levels up again, both the purchasing power will be fractioned and the supply chain collapse will eradicate most products. Netflix will shinkflate quality away faster than they increase prices. You'll see tech demos of AI generative capabilities getting better (like if good director/writers/cinematographers was utilizing it) but it'll rarely manifest, instead content that's actually released will get more generic and more sloppier.

What if we....destroyed a bunch of capital though? Maybe in a big war or something? That would be like a big reset button wouldn't it? Allowing the system to exist forever!

[-] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 41 points 4 days ago

Keep jacking the price up and shittifying the service.

Do streaming services understand why we dumped cable....like at all?

[-] sexywheat@hexbear.net 28 points 4 days ago

Never underestimate the mental gymnastics that your average failson / HR dweeb / professional managerial class dork is capable of.

[-] BobDole@hexbear.net 21 points 4 days ago

MBA motherfuckers are capable of the most incredible idiocy

[-] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 23 points 4 days ago

Piracy is just easier at this point man.

[-] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago

Wasn't this the whole reason Netflix even exists? People would pay for it because it was more convenient than pirate-jammin

“[Netflix] members pay as much attention to midroll ads as they do to the shows and movies themselves,” Amy Reinhard, president of advertising at Netflix, said, per the publication.

[-] XiaCobolt@hexbear.net 23 points 4 days ago

So no attention unless it's Cobra Kai.

[-] MemesAreTheory@hexbear.net 35 points 4 days ago

Literally cancelled all of my subscriptions first time I got an ad on Amazon Prime. I knew it was just going to be the first among all of them, so I went from spending like $70 a month on all of the subscription services I had to $6 per month for a VPN. They could not PAY ME to watch their garbage ads, much less convince me to pay them for the privilege.

[-] Tabitha@hexbear.net 4 points 4 days ago

$70 a month on all of the subscription services

I've never paid for a tv show streaming service in my entire life. Even when a friend accidentally leaves their account logged into my device it's only like 1 or 2 services.

We can't all be born based, Bane. Some of us are adopted and that's FINE.

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 34 points 4 days ago

What does this mean? It doesn't specify what "ai generated" advertising is. Are they going to try to generate an ad in the context of what you're watching so you don't know it's not part of the show? or..?

[-] Owl@hexbear.net 29 points 4 days ago

Hello [account holder name] from [account holder town], I'm [name of character] from the hit series [whatever you're watching]. When I'm not busy [plot of thing] I enjoy using [product]. [product]! It's [slogan]!

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago

oh god.. please no

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 23 points 4 days ago

lol basically that new black mirror episode

[-] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago

A couple buddies are watching binge-watching Black Mirror.

"What's better than a couple of buddies hangin' out drinking ShttyBrw beer, eating BetterThanPizza, and binge-watching Netflix? This is great."

"You mean this six hour ad we've been watching?"

"What?... I thought we got lucky and this was ad-fre— Wait. This is just an ad? Why didn't you tell me? Why are we watching this?"

"There is no 'we'. You're on your couch yourself. I'm part of the ad." Disappears. And the pizza and beer are gone too.

"What the hell." And I don't think I can resist the urge to order a BetterThanPizza and drink that entire 12 pack of ShttyBrw in the fridge. Why did I buy that? It tastes like piss. "Oh, fuck."

They already do that with updated product placements.

[-] Tabitha@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago

I think if there was a thing, like the character got fast food, whoever gave the highest bid for the quarter (tacobell, pizza hut, etc.) had their logos automatically placed onto the character's food bags/cups, I don't think that would be any more problematic than regular product placement, but I feel like they've got something much worse planned. Pirates would see a snapshot of time though.

[-] peeonyou@hexbear.net 3 points 3 days ago

yeah... that could also be used to track who is recording and uploading things too.. hmm

[-] Comrade_Mushroom@hexbear.net 35 points 4 days ago

[-] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago

I look forward to the lawsuit because the AI advertised a new car or something that doesn't exist for like $500.

[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

are the ads going to start out having gratuitous nudity and then tone it down in the third season?

[-] abc@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago
[-] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago

i think i'm just thinking of before they started cancelling everything after one season.

[-] simontherockjohnson@lemmy.ml 25 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Netflix is launching an ad platform and advertising it by running slop thru it? It's the lorem ipsum of streaming.

Cool, well if reactionaries are given the green light that it’s ok to criminalize certain groups solely because the normals^TM^ find their existence annoying, then I hope both generative AI and also advertising both get banned just for annoying me.

[-] darkcalling@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago

The most evilly clever thing they did was introduce mandatory hardware link encryption (HDCP) to prevent using a VCR, dvd-recorder, DVR, etc to record streaming content. And by not having their own DVR they'll be in a position when they wish to have for the first time since the late 90s (well over 30 years at this point) the population in a place where they cannot skip ads at all, the technology, the ability carefully murdered and the population trained like dogs to accept it. Add on the fact it's on-demand instead of something a box can passively pick out of a multiplexed signal and even if that wasn't an issue it's just not practical to record and watch later a bunch of streaming series.
