On this day in 1969, the Cordobazo Uprising began in the city of Córdoba, Argentina as a general strike, with workers seizing the city, burning the corporate headquarters of Citroën and Xerox, and clashing with the army.

The rebellion took place under the military dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Onganía, who had seized power in a coup in 1966. Onganía's government had suspended the right to strike, froze workers' wages, suppressed communist movements, and extended the age of retirement.

In the wake of widespread violent state repression against protesters, the labor union "CGT de los Argentinos", led by Agustín Tosco, called for national strike on May 30th, 1969. In Cordoba, the general strike and protests began one day earlier.

On the first day of the protests, police opened fire on thousands of protesters, killing a worker named Maximo Mena, causing the strike to escalate into a citywide revolt, leading to widespread destruction of property and seizing of city spaces. Onganía crushed the rebellion with the military, and Agustín Tosco was arrested for his role in the rebellion.

Fell over a chair and hit the side of it pretty hard, got some pain going but I think I'm fine. One of the chair arm guards is broke though. Not a fan of being clumsy but at least I don't feel anything broken in me

gosh I sure hope that on the next Chapo Trap House they can get liberal zionist David Sirota as a guest to talk about [checks notes] tax reform!

pathetic

[-] miz@hexbear.net 10 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

sample of the kind of bullshit that David Sirota is retweeting

The antisemitic murder of two young people at the Capital Jewish museum in Washington D.C. is devastating. May the memories of Sarah Milgrim and Yaron Lischinsky be a blessing. My heart hurts for them, their families, and everyone who is concerned about threats to their families and communities.

Antisemitism is real. It's toxic. And we must fight it. Anyone who doubts that could just read comments on my social media posts over the past few weeks. It’s also almost always bound up with other forms of hate that threaten our shared humanity. As attorney general, I’ll fight to make sure everyone in this state feels safe and protected from violence and hate.

Whenever Anglos are first exposed to the Irish language written down they're always like "omg haha it's so weird thats not how you should write those words". FUCK OFF!!! ITS A DIFFERENT FUCKING LANGUAGE!!! It's way more grammatically consistent than English, you just can't read it because it's a different language. There's a million interviews where an American talk show host has an Irish person on and goes "haha Aoife, that's a weird name! Haha Saoirse, that's a weird name!" Fuck off fuck off fuck offfff

[-] buckykat@hexbear.net 11 points 4 days ago

I've always assumed the Roman alphabet spelling of Irish was the english's fault somehow, like what they did to Chinese romanization before the CPC fixed it.

"I hate power of friendship" mfers when Ethan Hunt does the impossible.

John wick: ends up being purposeless after getting his revenge. Bond: ends up being a self desctructive asshole. Ethan hunt: fights for his friends.

So few hours in the day when you have to keep working doubles. I may go back to my old habits of waking up super early just to exercise.

Are dick measuring contests judged on precision or speed?

[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago

Usually speed, shown in number of dicks measured per minute

I got an estimate to fix my car and the guy doing it kept talking and talking. He was mostly pleasant, but I have a hard time with long interactions with people who don't know me.

I'm fairly certain I'm neurodivergent because "being normal" is exhausting for me. When I'm with people who know me, I'm fine, I could conversate for hours. But with strangers I feel like I'm an actor in a play I really don't want to be in.

i have encountered a new kind of guy: committed "Hungarian Freedom Fighter" defender with her own self-published book about grandpa the "Hungarian Freedom Fighter." did you know i'm a liar for thinking that there being a "Hungarian Freedom Fighters Incorporated" that the CIA worked with to escape some "Hungarian Freedom Fighters" means that the CIA generally supported them? i guess i respect still advocating OG anti-tankieism in 2025 because that's pretty funny?

Watching the recent Did You Know Gaming video on Gunpei Yokoi made me curious to check out the Japanese biography they mentioned ({任天堂|にんてんどう}ノスタルジー {横井|よこい}{軍平|ぐんぺい}とその{時代|じだい}). I thought it'd be fairly inaccessible, but I was surprised that I was able to get through the intro without too much difficulty—still very slowly, mind you, but I wasn't running to the dictionary every other word as I had expected. It's making me realize I might be setting myself up for failure by trying to read novels, since they tend to have all kinds of flowery language whereas nonfiction has more straightforward prose. I'm not sure I'm interested enough in Gunpei Yokoi to read this particular book, but I'm sure I can find some neat nonfiction books in my areas of interest that haven't been translated yet.

Everytime someone shoplifts one of the chocolate bars from the oxfam when im on shift i just do the NL bit about imagining them dying in a car crash later that day because they were too distracted eating their chocolate bar

[-] Leon_Frotsky@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago

Inb4 "actually shoplifting is always cool and based", they're literally shoplifting from a gaza famine relief fund. There's a real corporation's shop right across the road that sells the same chocolate bars and also has zero security they could shoplift from instead.

Congratulations to the 5 people that have fried their brains enough to also understand this.

Hate to think in terms of grind set unironically or optimization culture but it is tempting when my time has been getting more and more limited these days. Spent an hour or so making some tofu patties yesterday so these days I can spend less time getting lunch ready and heading to the gym when I can in the afternoon. I also got a solid 40 minutes to myself when commuting better spent on listening to theory instead of belting out warbles to my fav commiku or no-copyright songs. I remember taking the bargain of healthy eating, fasting and gym for a longer life and part of me wants to enjoy it by doing nothing but nothing is ever guaranteed so I need to make the most of my time hence why I been thinking about this.
