Tasers can cause heart attacks, tear gas can cause asphyxiation, I don't even have to get into what those extendable metal batons can do.

Does everyone remember that one week where Biden was advocating that cops shoot people in the legs and libs were a little confused on how to message that? Half were ignoring it and the other half were trying to earnestly say shooting people in the legs would save lives (it wouldn't).

Fun fact there's no reliably non-lethal way to shoot someone with a firearm. If you're shooting someone, you're attempting to kill them. People have watched way too many movies where the Terminator or whatever will shoot someone in the thigh with expert accuracy, leaving their target in pain and immobilized, but alive. Yeah no. People are twitchy and don't have perfect accuracy. You're trained to fire at center mass not because that's the best location to shoot a person, but because that's where you're most likely to hit. If you're aiming for a leg you might as well be aiming at their groin, the ground, or even their head. And even if by some miracle you do manage to hit precisely in the leg as a non-lethal technique, good job you just lacerated the target's femoral artery and they'll bleed out in 3 minutes.

I fucking hate cops

For a society that is so immersed in guns, americans seem disconnected af them. "you don't aim a gun unless you intend to shoot and you don't shoot unless you intend to kill" is like basic knowledge that even ppl who don't use firearms regularly should know, biden's phrase is beyond embarassing, but any lib who doesn't have his level of dementia and agreed with with is just as gross as the regular facist bootlicker

People have watched too many movies

Movies have ruined the trope, as well. It used to be "this shooter is so fucking good at shooting people they can hit a specific body part at 400 yards with a pistol. Everyone else has to aim for center mass even with scopes."

Then that got copied and eventually turned into shorthand for "gun toting hero badass," which caused writers to start making villains with "this bad guy is just as good with a gun as the protagonist," which has now gotten completely lost in the sauce. It's like kids arguing who can beat up whose dad or whether Goku could beat Superman. Except now it's blended over into reality where people think superheroes are real.

I wonder if cops would accept this kind of rhetoric if I shot them.

[-] homhom9000@hexbear.net 40 points 6 days ago

We simply need to use non-lethal weapons as well since it's only fair.

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 36 points 6 days ago

Your honor I think you'll find this was assault with a less than deadly weapon

[-] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 31 points 6 days ago

Is there anything the police don't think is a deadly weapon?

your honor my client believed he was under threat while the suspect was surrendering with his hands up because my client thought he was going to get slapped by the raised empty hands

[-] Keld@hexbear.net 21 points 6 days ago

I think breathing too hard at a cop is assault with a deadly weapon. Which obviously means there's no reason to do anything but use maximum force. Nuke the cops.

"They coughed in the direction of the officer and he could have been sick or something, we find the defendent guilty of terrorism through use of biological warfare."

[-] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 6 days ago

the person coughed in my area while wearing a n95 mask, they were trying to infect me with that China virus I also think isn't something to worry about

[-] Mardoniush@hexbear.net 47 points 6 days ago

Yeah, that reporter got shot from less than 10m away that might have shattered bone or severed arteries. For comparison the recommended minimum range for civillian variants is 18 meters.

I long ago when I was a cop defending shitlib preferred the term "less lethal" because although they're not likely to kill they certainly still can. I think it's still pretty accurate.

[-] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 36 points 6 days ago

I did a double take after reading the words ”long ago when I was a cop”.

[-] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 29 points 6 days ago

Now I'm a Hexbear cop. I just can't get away from my coppish tendencies. Once a pig always a pig apparently biggus-piggus

[-] GiorgioBoymoder@hexbear.net 12 points 6 days ago

yeah I mean "Less-lethal" is even the technical term the cops use for training and referring to these weapons.

[-] LuigiMaoFrance@lemmy.ml 5 points 6 days ago

Don't they usually say "less-than-lethal", implying that the ammo isn't lethal?

[-] tocopherol@hexbear.net 12 points 6 days ago

The other way actually, some will say 'less-than-lethal' but they are marketed by producers as 'less lethal' because 'less-than-lethal' would be false advertising, they are recoginzed to be potentially lethal by users and the companies that make them.

[-] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 38 points 6 days ago

Neither are tasers and tear gas, the company that makes tasers even calls them ”less lethal” instead of non-lethal amerikkka-clap

[-] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 24 points 6 days ago

and here in germany, both the federal police and the thuringian state police want to introduce tasers and "AI in investigations". the thuringian authorities are highly known for their well-documented brutality and involvement in drug trafficking.

fun times indeed.

[-] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 12 points 6 days ago

thuringian

The heck is that? One of Mordor's lost legions?

[-] ourtimewillcome@hexbear.net 16 points 6 days ago

State in eastern Germany, lies on the territory of the former GDR districts of Erfurt, Gera and Suhl, which were liquidated after the illegal annexation.

Rubber and Plastic Bullets were invented by the British forces for use in Northern Ireland and killed 17 people, over half of whom were children, while seriously injuring over 615 people between 1988-98 including permanent blindness and loss of eyes.

[-] Feinsteins_Ghost@hexbear.net 32 points 6 days ago

I've never head them referred to as 'non lethal'. Always been 'less than lethal'.

They are still projectiles hurled at great speed via a timed and controlled expulsion of gasses. You're gonna get fucked up if you're on the receiving end.

Not guaranteed dead, just probably dead, instead.

[-] Maeve@kbin.earth 29 points 6 days ago

They started calling them that after people died from them.

[-] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 30 points 6 days ago

I’ve started seeing “less than lethal” more and more for that reason I assume.

[-] propter_hog@hexbear.net 22 points 6 days ago

And now it's been modified again to just "less lethal"

[-] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 17 points 6 days ago

There's a plot point in The Last Castle where the prison warden wants to take out a prisoner who is protesting against their treatment. Rubber bullet to the soft spot on the side of the head.

[-] Biggay@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

I call them still-lethals for that reason

[-] AssortedBiscuits@hexbear.net 2 points 6 days ago

It's non-lethal in the same way pellets or even smaller calibers are non-lethal. Just look at this:

This is the caliber needed to kill the animal with a single bullet at center mass. For .223 LR, you can reliably kill rats at center mass but can't reliably kill squirrels at center mass. That's fucking it. It doesn't mean squirrels are somehow impervious to .223 LR or that you can't kill a squirrel by aiming at its head or that a squirrel can survive getting mag dumped or the squirrel would survive getting shot by a .223 LR at less than 5 yards. It just means if a rat gets hit by a .223 LR and it wasn't at its tail, the rat is completely fucked while a squirrel may or may not immediately die.

Going back to rubber bullets, I'm pretty fucking sure they're good enough to reliably kill rats. And those "uh aktually, you're suppose to aim for the ground and let it bounce up to hit people instead of aiming at people directly" rounds are good enough for squirrels and rabbits.
