Anyone with news alerts turned on, do yourself a favour and turn them off.

The news is always available - if and when you want it. You don't need to allow yourself to be barraged by it 24/7.

I have a very strict notification policy on my phone. Only the most deserving apps (like text messaging) are allowed the privilege of sending me notifications. Most apps in my device are not allowed to speak to me unless spoken to first. They stay in their little spot in my app drawer, in forced deep sleep until I summon them. Then and only then are they allowed access to my attention.

I've actually had to turn off YouTube notifications because the thing never shuts up. It's always telling me about new uploads and it's like, I'll see them when I go on YouTube, I don't need to know about it right fucking now

Exactly the same for me.

Notifications are allowed only when they serve as a convenience mechanism to tell me something happened in my life that I want to know about and care about.

They are not allowed when they function purely as a free interrupt mechanism to allow a corporation to monetise my attention for their profit.

At some point I got a BBC notif that shortened "Theresa May invokes article 51" to "Theresa May invokes article 5" because the 1 didn't fit the in width of my phone screen.

That one woke me up

She finally cracked as a result of no one listening to her. Now we're all going to pay.

It’s manufactured attention demand. The same thing happened in November 2020.

We had a nice four year break and we’re right back at it.

"I'm going to put a device in my pocket and have it cause me pain over events that don't impact me or if they do impact me, will almost never be improved or helped in any way by that alert" sounds like a really dumb way to be to me.

It's an addiction for some.
