Elizabeth Gurley Flynn was born in 1890 in Concord, New Hampshire, to a radical, activist working-class family. When she was 10, the family moved to the South Bronx, where she attended public school. By the time she was 15, Flynn was active in socialist groups. At 15, she gave her first public speech, and the next year she was expelled from high school. She became a full-time organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

In the years leading up to World War I, Flynn was active on women's rights, free speech for IWW speakers and organizing textile strikes in places like Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Paterson, New Jersey. She also worked to organize garment workers in Pennsylvania, silk weavers in New Jersey, restaurant workers in New York City and miners in Minnesota.

Flynn opposed the war when it broke out, and like many war opponents, she was charged with espionage. The charges were dropped and Flynn began working to defend immigrants threatened with deportation for their opposition to the war.

In 1920, Flynn helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and was elected to the national board. From 1927-1930, she chaired International Labor Defense. During that time she was active in trying to free jailed labor organizers Thomas J. Mooney and Warren K. Billings. For the first half of the 1930s, she withdrew from public life because of bad health, but she returned to public life in 1939 and was re-elected to the ACLU board. When Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin signed a nonagression pact, the ACLU expelled all Communist Party members from its ranks, including Flynn.

Flynn ran for the Communist Party of America's Central Committee successfully, and ran for a seat in Congress unsuccessfully. During World War II, Flynn fought for women's economic equality. After the war, as communism grew more unpopular in the United States, Flynn shifted back to defending free speech rights for radicals. In 1951, she was arrested for conspiracy to overthrow the government based on the Smith Act of 1940. She spent more than two years in prison.

She returned to political action once she was out of prison, and in 1961, she became the first woman elected national chair of the Communist Pary. A critic of the Soviet Union, Flynn traveled behind the Iron Curtain and was stricken ill. She died in the USSR and was given a state funeral in Red Square.

A past love interest/friend hit me up on socials and now I keep on thinking of how I seem to repeat the same mistakes I have ever since I was a teen catching feelings. Being young at heart for the wrong reasonsbuggy-disappointed

The Asgore truck song has been living rent free in my head for a couple days. That and the YTPMV of "The World Revolving" with the Family Guy merging without looking clip. Amazingly, despite this I still find both funny.

Why they need shooting squads to kill 1 person? Isnt 1 bullet enough? What if my shooting squad buddies had a bad day and decided to shoot me while im distracted shooting at the condemned?

[-] Babs@hexbear.net 2 points 1 hour ago

You tell the firing squad that one of the guns has a blank, so that afterwards they can convince themselves that they didn't actually kill the guy ("the recoil of my shot felt a little soft. I must have fired the blank. I did not kill this person, my colleagues did.")

At least that's what I've heard.

[-] Enjoyer_of_Games@hexbear.net 1 points 2 hours ago

People don't like killing in cold blood. It's much easier to go along with a group shooting and to be able to think to yourself that it probably was someone else's bullet that did the deed.

Being an executioner was also an unsavory job with social implications.

I had an allergy test done and I'm 4++ to all grasses. I'm medically exempt from touching grass.

I also have a level 3 allergy to dogs (I have a dog who sheds a lot), and a level 4 or 3 to all the plants in my area.

Its really strange how some people will use "this person is taking ozempic" as an insult. Like its a bad thing to take a medication if you're struggling with an eating disorder or drug addiction????

[-] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 11 hours ago

some assholes hate fat people so much that they hate them for even trying to lose weight
same thing as mocking fat people at the gym, or for being on a diet
only theres the added angle of "cheating" at weight loss by using the wonders of modern medicine

Just started my first mini-beef with a “leftist” pro-ai content creator lmao

They have a following of a couple hundred thousand. Kinda interesting, I’ve never been digitally burned at the stake before 😎

I keep hearing youtubers say "I don't hate MrBeast, but..." when they start criticizing one (if not several) of the many things he does that sucks, and I'm like... why? Why don't you hate him? I'm sure the answer varies from person to person but I get the sense that it frequently boils down to "I respect his success". I don't respect him for that and I don't even respect that view. He's successful at being a piece of shit. He is a symptom of a greater problem, yes, but that doesn't preclude him from being disgusting. I do hate him. I hate anyone who will sacrifice, smother and suppress humanity en masse for attention and for wealth. I hate him and I hate that I am even forced to know that he exists. Normally I would look at someone like him and think, "fuck this guy sucks, I'll go out of my way to tune him out", but it's not an option with ol' Jimmy. His dead, soulless leer follows us all into the real world now. I can't buy groceries without seeing his stupid fucking face. Why? Why should I have to see him? What's he doing so well that makes him worthy of such promotion? Extracting cash from 8 year olds better than anyone else?

Alright time to stop before I get too illegal-to-say

I can't do literally anything. But I meet other people who can't do literally anything and they can get by. How that work

New saying I just came up with: jokers and chokers.

You can say like "the democrats are a bunch of jokers and chokers." Or something to that effect. Say it about a group you don't think highly of.

[-] HarryLime@hexbear.net 6 points 13 hours ago

I probably didn't come up with it. Maybe I did, IDK

Platong sacred stones without grinding. This game is soooo fucking easy. Seth go brrrrrrr. The difficulty in fire emblem games comes from being taught balance is good. A pre-promote with these kinds of growth could solo the game. Yeah the exp gains suck but the stars per level and starting stars are fantastic. Im working through the series essentially just using paladins, flyers and healers and its been so fucking easy. I never played tear ring of Berwick saga, how are those? Thracia is legit my favorite fire emblem, I like a hard default setting.

Sometimes I think about the level of depression I experienced when I was around 12 and genuinely nothing I've experienced since has been as bad as that

I dont fully know what caused it but even after something traumatizing happens to me now I'm always like this still really doesn't compare to how bad that was

Also funny in an ironic way that literally no adult in my life did anything helpful but many of them did things that actively made it worse

literally no adult in my life did anything helpful but many of them did things that actively made it worse

real shit

[-] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 9 points 15 hours ago

It's interesting looking back and realizing they really were just doing whatever they felt like and claimed it was to help

Like one of their ideas was to randomly paint my room but to tell me I couldn't have it the colors I liked because they were "dark and depressing" and then painted it the 2 colors i specifically said i didnt want like come on

socialism-is-when

"Democracy is when the government oppresses people, and the more people it oppresses, the more democratic it is! And when it oppresses a whole lot of people, then it's a direct democracy (like ancient Athens)!"
