Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

Now this is not news, but:

If anyone wants to spend their weekend reading about Soviet/Russian and US air defence systems (extreme nerd activity I know), Here's a great source of English translations from a Hungarian book about them. Hundreds of pages of information. Read quite a lot of it already over the past few months.

To try tangentially link this to current events/news, Russia has constructed a new ring of Short Range Air Defense systems around Moscow on the 50km ring road, mainly consisting of Pantsir S1 systems in elevated towers, about 45 of them and some radars, to adress the Ukrainian drone threat.

Source

This is pretty much a direct copy of what the USSR did with the first S-300 systems, deploying 56 batteries around Moscow to defend against the nuclear cruise missile threat at the time. AGM-86 ALCM: a nuclear armed, 2400km range cruise missile launched from B-52 Stratofortress bombers, and BGM-109G Gryphon GLCM: a nuclear armed ground launched Tomahawk cruise missile. Which you can read about in the booklet on S-300 systems.

Big Bird search radar from the S-300 system on an elevated platform around Moscow.

[-] sisatici@hexbear.net 0 points 10 minutes ago

I feel like AA systems avoid being placed on top of the mountains. Is this true or am I wrong? Are there technical difficulties either radar systems or it is just that they don't want to climb all the way

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 6 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Fun fact: Moscow’s concentric ring layout was deliberately designed to accommodate the deployment of the S-25 Berkut system in the 1950s, the world’s first integrated air defense missile system placed around Moscow’s perimeter to protect the capital city of the USSR from aerial threats.

[-] Torenico@hexbear.net 4 points 1 hour ago

These structures kinda remind me of the german Flakturm of WW2, just elevated multi-level AA platforms for strategic defense, but instead of having absurdly thick walls and roofs it's just a bunch of more simple looking structures... also much cheaper.

I believe the idea of having elevated AA platforms is for having a much better "field of fire" against low flying threats? Also I assume radars work more efficiently when elevated, which is why ships carry their main radar(s) on the very top of the main mast.. right?

Watching reddit Ukraine libs cry will never not be funny. data-laughing

Them acting like Trump hosting Putin was some kind of humiliation and betrayal means that they still don't get it. Project Ukraine was never about freedumb, it was to use Ukraine as a disposable pawn to weaken both Russia and the EU. Ukraine was never anything more than a useful asset that was to be discarded in the end. If Project Ukraine meets its objectives then good, if not, then the American empire will simply find another useful idiot that will sacrifice their own country for them. This goes to show that America is truly the worst "ally" on the planet and will happily sacrifice anyone for their own interests.

Now that project Ukraine has met its objectives (weaken Russia and the EU), America will dump the issue on its hapless EU bootlickers and continue to focus on squeezing China.

Has Ukraine weakened Russia? In terms of GDP, but with regards to material production?

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 8 points 36 minutes ago* (last edited 30 minutes ago)

No and yes.

Russia’s initial responses against Western sanctions were nothing short of superb. Import substitutions, running large government deficits to prevent a recession, ruble-for-gas payment schemes, ramping up domestic military production etc. On the international stage, Russia called for de-dollarization among the Global Majority countries and forgave $21 billion of African countries’ debt, both of which precisely targeted the weak points of American financial imperialism.

However, as time went on, Russia failed to capitalize on the unique situation presented to them to undergo an economic transformation. The nationalist faction failed in their endeavor to coup the liberals, and by late 2023, the neoliberals have pretty much stabilized their position. The large government subsidies to promote domestic industrial growth were eventually neutralized by the high interest rate due to the neoliberal central bank hiking rate to 20%. On the international front, Russia’s call for de-dollarization ultimately did not materialize despite initial fervor from many Global South countries at risk of defaulting, particularly because of China’s unwillingness to give up their beneficiary position under the dollar hegemony (if you pay attention to the official Chinese readouts, there was nearly nothing or even a deliberate aversion to talk about de-dollarization, especially during BRICS summits).

When Putin was re-elected in March 2024, the only significant cabinet position change was the appointment of Andrei Belousov (deputy PM, one of the more competent nationalist-leaning leader) to the Ministry of Defense, replacing Shoigu. This marked the new status quo in Russia, with the neoliberal faction regaining control of Russia’s economy but gave Putin the defense/military industrial sector to finish the war in Ukraine.

I recently learned from reading Naked Capitalism that Russia and India are still trading oil in dollar terms lol, when Russia should have priced its oil in its own index when the war started. So much missed opportunities.

So, Russia is now in a weird situation where there is both stagnation and an ongoing war that requires intensive economic mobilization.

Honduras: 3 Men Charged Over Plot to Kill Former President Zelaya and Overthrow Castro - Telesur English

Article

They aimed to jeopardize social peace and democracy in this Central American country. On Thursday, Honduran authorities arrested Arcadio Lopez, Perfecto Enamorado, and Antonio Catan, who were formally charged with the crimes of terrorism and attempted murder.

They are part of a conspiracy to assassinate former Honduran President and Libre Party coordinator Manuel Zelaya and overthrow President Xiomara Castro. This conspiracy also aimed to paralyze the state, disrupt the constitutional order, and jeopardize social peace and democracy.

“That is to say, to prevent the 2025 general elections from being held,” said Attorney General Joel Zelaya, who stressed that the attempted attack against the former president was not an isolated incident but part of a broader plan to force the early ouster of Castro and thus prevent the elections scheduled for Nov. 30.

“This case is not based on conjecture or rumors. The evidence we present today is based on irrefutable scientific proof,” the Attorney General stated, adding that authorities are working to expand the charges to other individuals and urged the public to trust that prosecutors will fulfill their duty to ensure clean and democratic elections.

Former President Zelaya commented on the matter on the social platform X, saying the evidence confirms there was also a plan to kill him in 2009. Meanwhile, Hector Zelaya, private secretary to President Castro, said political violence has no place in the country.

“Since 2009, we have denounced the hate campaign against my family, especially against my father, Manuel Zelaya, general coordinator of the party that fights for the Freedom and Refoundation of Honduras, and former president ousted in a 2009 coup,” he said.

The political leader’s son called today’s arrests “a firm and responsible step by the Public Ministry” and expressed confidence that the investigation will continue until the events are clarified, the material and intellectual authors are identified, and the full weight of the law is applied.

“Neither fear, nor threats, nor violence will stop the Refoundation of Honduras. We remain steadfast, with more strength and conviction than ever,” he said.

The UN criticizes Peru's amnesty law, calling it a “step backward” in the pursuit of justice. President Dina Boluarte has enacted a law granting amnesty to police officers and military personnel convicted of crimes committed during the country's internal armed conflict between 1980 and 2000.

“With the enactment of this amnesty law, the government recognizes the sacrifice of members of the Armed Forces, the police, and the self-defense committees (civilians) in the fight against terrorism and in the defense of democracy,” said the president during the enactment ceremony.

The internal conflict in Peru, in which state forces fought the Shining Path and Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) guerrillas, left around 70,000 dead, most of them civilians, according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

“International law, to which Peru is bound, clearly prohibits amnesties and the statute of limitations for serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law,” Turk warned in his statement.

The law could apply to 156 cases with final judgments and more than 600 ongoing legal proceedings for crimes committed during the period, according to experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, who do not speak on behalf of the organization. Prior to this amnesty, Peru had passed a law in August 2024 declaring crimes against humanity committed before 2002 in the fight against guerrillas to be time-barred.

He got to show off his jets and his beautiful military men to Putin, and the nasty press didn't manage to ruin the vibes. Even floated the idea of hanging out in Moscow soon, I bet Putin would show him some cool tanks and gorgeous Russian military men.

Former president of Peru jailed by court order - Prensa Latina

Article

Lima, Aug. 14 (Prensa Latina) The iron door of the prison for former high-ranking officials slammed shut today behind former Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra, who must serve five months of preventive detention that could be extended to 20 years.

The white van belonging to the National Penitentiary Institute transported Vizcarra from the temporary detention center to the Barbadillo prison, which was originally built for former president Albert Fujimori and had to be expanded several times to accommodate other involuntary inmates.

In front of the prison, located on the grounds of a police barracks, small groups of Vizcarra's supporters and detractors chanted slogans in one direction or another, while a police barrier prevented them from crossing and approaching the prison gate.

The ruling handed down yesterday by Judge Jorge Chávez seemed to surprise the defendant, as his cheerful and optimistic face turned somber, and he even ruled out the possibility of an adverse ruling such as the one requested by the prosecution, which sought a 20-year prison sentence.

In a hearing lasting more than seven hours, Judge Chávez overturned the decision of a lower court judge who had granted Vizcarra conditional release while he faces trial on charges of receiving $657,000 in exchange for public works contracts, as confirmed by the businessmen involved.

The events took place before he became president (2018-2020), when he was governor of the southern region of Moquegua.

Judge Chávez argued that the evidence of Vizcarra's guilt makes a conviction very likely, which could lead to his flight, and therefore he must remain in prison until the trial is over.

Vizcarra's lawyer, Erwin Sicchia, announced that he will appeal the ruling and is confident that it will be overturned, but the coordinator of the Prosecutor's Office for high-level corruption cases, Rafael Vela, assured that the evidence against Vizcarra makes it almost certain that he will be convicted.

The former president is also facing two investigations for illegal contracts awarded by the highway agency (Provías) and for hiring a singer with no qualifications for the position as an advisor to the Ministry of Culture for $50,000, cases that occurred during his presidential term.

Vizcarra shares the prison with former presidents Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), and Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), although they have no contact with each other.

Toledo and Humala have been convicted of corruption and sentenced to 20 years and six months each, while Castillo is on trial for attempting to dissolve Congress, with the prosecution seeking a 34-year prison sentence.

Me and refusing to get hyped by any press conference, speech, meeting, delegation, etc that Putin is involved in stay winning.

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 15 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

The best part is Putin alluding to some kind of agreement but Trump saying that there was only progress and no agreement, Trump saying that the meeting was a 10/10, but neither side elaborating on anything and cutting the meeting short abruptly. What actually happened, nobody knows. If I had to guess it went badly, no deal or even understanding reached, and both sides are just bluffing in front of the press.

[-] TheLastHero@hexbear.net 9 points 3 hours ago

I bet trump derailed the negotiations with irrelevant nonsense that Putin was happy to entertain since Russia is only benefiting from dragging out this whole so called peace process. And Trump is happy because he got to yap to a captive audience of powerful dudes

[-] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 24 points 5 hours ago

Chavez dying of cancer is one of the worst things to ever happen in Latin America history. So fucking weird how many Pink Tide leaders died of cancer/heart attack or had cancer.

We will find out all the details in the coming hours or days. No basis for a ceasefire exists at this point and Russia would not agree to one as that would only benefit the Kiev regime's military. Meanwhile, the Western imperialists are still hoping that they can get some kind of "save face" outcome from this conflict and want to continue arming Kiev (think of "Vietnamization" during the final years of the Vietnam War). But the tide of the war has clearly turned against the West and its Nazi proxies...

I gotta admit, seeing the liberals spamming pictures of Trump being gay with Putin on Twitter is really fuckin tiresome. Did you consider that for a fucking second or will you be stuck in 2016 for the rest of your life? debord-tired

[-] emdash@hexbear.net 20 points 6 hours ago

Liberals are so homophobic. Even the ones who think they're progressive. Every time a conservative does something, liberals bring out their list of classics:

  • "haha this homophobic conservative is probably a self-hating closeted gay in denial!" (as if only gay people can be homophobic??)
  • "I will now depict my enemies as gay lovers. This isn't implying they're lesser because they're gay, I swear I'm just doing it because they would hate to see themselves depicted like this!!"
  • As previous, but depicting their enemies in drag
  • The long list of put-downs that have to do with performing sex acts ("suck [person]'s dick", "kiss [person]'s ass", etc) that generally imply someone is bad because they're the submissive one in the invoked sex act

And many more!
