Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

It's that time of the month again: guess who's back in the hospital.

Bolsonaro's tests show residual signs of lung infections, esophagitis, and gastritis, according to medical report. A medical bulletin released on Saturday by DF Star Hospital in Brasília reports that tests performed on former President Jair Bolsonaro showed signs of lung infections, esophagitis, and gastritis.

According to the document, the tests revealed “residual images of two recent lung infections possibly related to episodes of bronchoaspiration.”

“The endoscopy showed persistence of esophagitis and gastritis, now less intense, but requiring continued medication,” the medical bulletin said. The doctors' recommendation is that the former president continue treatment for high blood pressure and reflux and take preventive measures against bronchoaspiration.

Bolsonaro left house arrest early to undergo blood and urine tests, an endoscopy, and an abdominal CT scan. He has already left the hospital and has not spoken to the press. According to his lawyers, the former president has been experiencing reflux and hiccups.

The president of the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Cristiano Zanin (former lawyer of Lula da Silva), cheduled the first session of the criminal trial for the attempted coup d'état for September 2. Bolsonaro is accused by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) of being the “main orchestrator, greatest beneficiary, and author” of actions aimed at disrupting the democratic rule of law in order to remain in power even after his defeat by Lula in 2022.

Organizations from the African continent launch day of solidarity with the Alliance of Sahel States

As the second anniversary of the Alliance of Sahel States approaches on September 16, 2025, the Pan Africanism Today Secretariat (PAT), composed of over 70 people’s movements and organizations across Africa, has issued a call to action, urging all progressive forces across the continent and around the globe to stand in solidarity with the AES. According to PAT, this would entail publicly declaring solidarity with the peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, amplifing the political significance of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), and exposing the role of imperialist powers and ECOWAS in undermining their sovereignty.

Movements are urged to organize mass mobilizations, protests, and other coordinated actions on September 16, 2025 to mark the AES’s second anniversary, as well as host educational events, forums, and teach-ins to deepen political understanding of the struggle. Cultural and creative expressions, along with bold acts of agitation and disruption, should be used to communicate the AES’s vision, challenge neocolonialism, and integrate solidarity into ongoing political activities.

Trump may make Zelensky a scapegoat if American efforts to mediate a peaceful settlement in Ukraine fail, writes The Times. According to its assessment, this is indicated by Trump's words that further progress in reaching an agreement on Ukraine now depends on Zelensky.

The publication notes that Trump has already agreed to abandon the prospect of Ukraine's NATO membership, and may now also accept other Russian demands, "such as removing Zelensky from office or excluding EU membership."

Trump has already called Zelensky after the talks with Putin. The US president had a lengthy conversation with the president of Ukraine during the flight to Washington, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said.

Right now, Trump is communicating with NATO colleagues. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino said that Zelensky is also participating in this conversation. Trump summoned Zelensky to Washington this Monday.

After a difficult phone conversation between Trump, Zelensky, and NATO country leaders, Zelensky announced that he will arrive in Washington for a meeting with President Trump on Monday.

Meanwhile, Europe is concerned that Trump will now pressure Zelensky to make territorial concessions. Trump also stated that Vladimir Putin prefers a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict rather than a temporary ceasefire.

Trump informed Zelensky and NATO leaders that Putin does not want a ceasefire and prefers a comprehensive peace agreement to end the war, reports Axios journalist Barak Ravid citing a source.

Moreover, according to the source who participated in the phone call, Trump generally agrees with Putin's position. "I believe that quickly reaching a peace agreement is better than a ceasefire," the source quotes Trump as saying. He also reports that the phone conversation between Trump, Zelensky, and NATO country leaders "was not easy."

Now this is not news, but:

If anyone wants to spend their weekend reading about Soviet/Russian and US air defence systems (extreme nerd activity I know), Here's a great source of English translations from a Hungarian book about them. Hundreds of pages of information. Read quite a lot of it already over the past few months.

To try tangentially link this to current events/news, Russia has constructed a new ring of Short Range Air Defense systems around Moscow on the 50km ring road, mainly consisting of Pantsir S1 systems in elevated towers, about 45 of them and some radars, to adress the Ukrainian drone threat.

Source

This is pretty much a direct copy of what the USSR did with the first S-300 systems, deploying 56 batteries around Moscow to defend against the nuclear cruise missile threat at the time. AGM-86 ALCM: a nuclear armed, 2400km range cruise missile launched from B-52 Stratofortress bombers, and BGM-109G Gryphon GLCM: a nuclear armed ground launched Tomahawk cruise missile. Which you can read about in the booklet on S-300 systems.

Big Bird search radar from the S-300 system on an elevated platform around Moscow.

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 33 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Fun fact: Moscow’s concentric ring layout was deliberately designed to accommodate the deployment of the S-25 Berkut system in the 1950s, the world’s first integrated air defense missile system placed around Moscow’s perimeter to protect the capital city of the USSR from aerial threats.

I feel like AA systems avoid being placed on top of the mountains. Is this true or am I wrong? Are there technical difficulties either radar systems or it is just that they don't want to climb all the way

[-] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

There are plenty of search radars that get put on the top of mountains, but not generally from the AA systems. Mapping ground clutter would be the technical challenge.

The first S-300s had a dedicated low altitude search radar that was elevated via a mobile mast, called "Clam Shell".

[-] Torenico@hexbear.net 20 points 13 hours ago

These structures kinda remind me of the german Flakturm of WW2, just elevated multi-level AA platforms for strategic defense, but instead of having absurdly thick walls and roofs it's just a bunch of more simple looking structures... also much cheaper.

I believe the idea of having elevated AA platforms is for having a much better "field of fire" against low flying threats? Also I assume radars work more efficiently when elevated, which is why ships carry their main radar(s) on the very top of the main mast.. right?

Watching reddit Ukraine libs cry will never not be funny. data-laughing

Them acting like Trump hosting Putin was some kind of humiliation and betrayal means that they still don't get it. Project Ukraine was never about freedumb, it was to use Ukraine as a disposable pawn to weaken both Russia and the EU. Ukraine was never anything more than a useful asset that was to be discarded in the end. If Project Ukraine meets its objectives then good, if not, then the American empire will simply find another useful idiot that will sacrifice their own country for them. This goes to show that America is truly the worst "ally" on the planet and will happily sacrifice anyone for their own interests.

Now that project Ukraine has met its objectives (weaken Russia and the EU), America will dump the issue on its hapless EU bootlickers and continue to focus on squeezing China.

Has Ukraine weakened Russia? In terms of GDP, but with regards to material production?

[-] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 48 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

No and yes.

Russia’s initial responses against Western sanctions were nothing short of superb. Import substitutions, running large government deficits to prevent a recession, ruble-for-gas payment schemes, ramping up domestic military production etc. On the international stage, Russia called for de-dollarization among the Global Majority countries and forgave $21 billion of African countries’ debt, both of which precisely targeted the weak points of American financial imperialism.

However, as time went on, Russia failed to capitalize on the unique situation presented to them to undergo an economic transformation. The nationalist faction failed in their endeavor to coup the liberals, and by late 2023, the neoliberals have pretty much stabilized their position. The large government subsidies to promote domestic industrial growth were eventually neutralized by the high interest rate due to the neoliberal central bank hiking rate to 20%. On the international front, Russia’s call for de-dollarization ultimately did not materialize despite initial fervor from many Global South countries at risk of defaulting, particularly because of China’s unwillingness to give up their beneficiary position under the dollar hegemony (if you pay attention to the official Chinese readouts, there was nearly nothing or even a deliberate aversion to talk about de-dollarization, especially during BRICS summits).

When Putin was re-elected in March 2024, the only significant cabinet position change was the appointment of Andrei Belousov (deputy PM, one of the more competent nationalist-leaning leader) to the Ministry of Defense, replacing Shoigu. This marked the new status quo in Russia, with the neoliberal faction regaining control of Russia’s economy but gave Putin the defense/military industrial sector to finish the war in Ukraine.

I recently learned from reading Naked Capitalism that Russia and India are still trading oil in dollar terms lol, when Russia should have priced its oil in its own index when the war started. So much missed opportunities.

So, Russia is now in a weird situation where there is both stagnation and an ongoing war that requires intensive economic mobilization.

To be an enemy of the U.S. is dangerous, to be an ally is fatal.

I'm fully convinced at this point that Reddit, especially in the major political subreddits like worldnews, is completely dictated by the U.S.
