Lebanon had an Applebees but it closed a decade ago because it was dogshit. Funnily enough it was also next to a US embassy office or something and taking pics nearby would get you questioned.

lol I was just thinking someone should compare this pic to where US/UK bases are

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 19 points 3 weeks ago

We don't have it in the UK. Not sure we have anything like it

Got me thinking, I have heard of Applebees before but have never cared enough to think what it is - Is it a diner or some kind?

[-] Rom@hexbear.net 13 points 3 weeks ago

Burgerlander slop joint

I'd take a diner any day over CRAPlebees, cheaper too.

It's a restaurant with a bar, not really a diner. It's more of a place that middle-class workers would go after work to have a few drinks and eat cheaply sourced food. It also doubled as a place for families to go during the day. We have several of these kinds of restaurant chains that all serve microwaved food and have a bunch of memorabilia on the walls. TGI Friday's, Applebee's, Chili's, Fudrucker's, etc.

The original was Max & Erma's. They were the first "casual dining" restaurant that appealed to baby boomer nostalgia in their design/layout. Imagine the bar from Cheer's but with antiques, collectables, and vintage signage all over the walls. It became a chain and was so successful everyone started copying it.

Oh that's interesting, I forget how much of this gets imported into our (UK) country and culture

[-] ColonelKataffy@hexbear.net 7 points 3 weeks ago

food mass produced offsite, packaged in bags, sent to restaurant where it is either microwaved or the bag is put in a hot bath to heat up. to be honest, i don't think i've ever eaten there (because i have dignity and im-vegan ) but it's known for being low-tier amerislop for boomers without tastebuds

[-] Flyberius@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

As far as I know yeah. I guess Harvester might be there closest thing we have, but that's more like shitty pub grub. I think Applebee's is just shitty food in general.

Frankie & Benny's or TGI Fridays would probably be the closest in more recent decades, especially the fact that they had a bar and were very much for the office worker crowd back when I remember them being big / new.

Most of ours are roadside places really, but none fit exactly. Little Chef was probably the most like it in terms of not having a 'theme', but the kinds of food and cheaper vibe was more like Happy Eater's maybe, with the buffet counters and salad bar etc.

(For any non-Brits go look up Happy Eater restaurants. The logo was a Pacman seemingly trying to make itself throw up, I shit you not)

It takes hours to reach a single applebees. I remember a few years ago I did, and it actually tasted great; just eh, not great enough to drive for hours to other cities lol.

[-] Weedian@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

More like CRAPplebees

[-] Feinsteins_Ghost@hexbear.net 17 points 3 weeks ago

Looks like Iran/Iraq/Syria are the only sane ones wrt that slop shack.

On a serious note, I'm curious as to the menu offerings, at an absolutely terrible Americana type restaurant. Do they offer the same apps and burgers, or do they offer regional eats like mcD's in France/japan/etc.

They have to be catering to American assholes who find themselves stuck there and their white palate just can't handle anything but hamburgers and reheated pasta dishes. Right?

[-] sempersigh@hexbear.net 23 points 3 weeks ago

Reading the reviews it appears to be mostly the same kind of slop. (Note that Google automatically translates reviews into English now this was originally in Arabic)

Really surreal you got a dude 40 miles from the border of yemen ordering a “cowboy ribeye” you can’t make this shit up

I ate at Applebees once in like 2003 while in the states with my parents as a kid, we dont really have em here but do get plenty of American TV so we tried it. If I recall correctly it was decent. I had some kinda lime chicken dealie.

[-] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 6 points 3 weeks ago

Crazy you vaguely remember what you ate

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 5 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I can actually vaguely remember a few places we ate that were chains that we didnt have local access to. I remember kina liking Olive Garden but I think that was cause they had unlimited breaf and i was a preteen on a road trip, we expected a hard rock cafe to suck but i also ended out ordering something that wasnt what id expected based on the menu description and didnt like much but it wasnt a quality thing,i remember it was some kinda bbq pork sandwich and it was like a chop on a sandwich where i was thinking pulled ans the sauce was a carolina style thing that i didnt think worked with a sandwich...yknow there may be more to my being a chef now than stumbling into it, i csn recall some meals. Probably remember it cause American TV commerucals reminsing me of the one experience. The closest Fox broadcaster to my was Rochester New York and due yo watching the Simpsons and stuff I became super familiar with their local business. We had an ongoing joke that Celino and Barnes were partners both in law and life and when ads started airing with them working solo we were devastated. There was also Auto Injury Attorney Willian Mattar and we were really frustrated he didnt realize his name rhymes with car. He eventually got there but used Injury Auto-urney first.
