So while I really hate performative tough guy bullshit as a former MMA practitioner, I would really caution you against thinking the guy in the picture on the left is not really fucking strong. the guy who's all cut up and striated with the ideal visible body often isn't stronger than the dude with a couple layers of fat over his muscles that has been lifting his heavy body around his whole life. There's also a class of dude I run into that just have some kind of genetics for absurd super colossal strength without any particular background in weightlifting or anything to justify why they are that strong (I'm sadly not in that cohort).

Additionally, we have weight classes for a reason. There was a fight recently where a chunky out of shape dude was put up against two female fighters and he won pretty handily. The gold medal winning women's soccer team got absolutely destroyed by a boy's 15-year-old club. Having trained with plenty of women in the gym over the years, none of them have ever expressed a rhetoric where they think that they can realistically fight a man in a venue where grappling is allowed. I will definitely take a lady Thai fighter over Joe barstool in a stand-up only bout though. There's plenty of footage of foreigners in Thailand trying their hand and getting absolutely pasted with some devastating leg kicks.

I give this starter a pack only a 5 out of 10.

Many a man underestimated Butter Bean.

There is no endurance, but the power is there. Someone in the example won't last a minute, but they wont have to if they drop 250lbs on your throat in that first minute.

I also bet you ask most women fighters if they feel comfortable taking on any guy at 230-245, they are having none of it. 100lbs of fat is still an absurd advantage.

I'm in this meme and I don't like it

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I'm the guy in the shirtless photo, but the rest is not accurate.

Well ok I have a long beard, but it's mot my personality.

I've got an alarming quantity. The saving grace is I don't think I'm strong, say any of the weird shit, post the memes or have delusions about my fighting proficiency. And I'm not bald.

I used to be rather fit and I wrestled in high school. I'm fairly confident I could break free of someone roughly less skilled than me and maybe a hair stronger and flee. I've never been in a fight, I've been punched while boxing but was too disoriented to get a good hit back (first and only time boxing), and I've punched a friend in the face as the culmination to a funny conversation about how he's never been punched in the face.

Flannel is really comfy, and I want to be the sort of person who goes on more hikes than I have time to.
I have no self delusions in the physical realm.

WTF is invisible lat syndrome, and why am I certain I have it?

Edit: nevermind, I'm negative for lats but also for the arm pose that is a result of the syndrome.

Random question, though... When does a moob become a pec? Asking for a friend.

[-] Soku@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

If your friend fails the pencil test, it's definitely a moob

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Ok, but when is it definitely a pec?

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 0 points 2 months ago

When it's made out of muscle and not lard.

[-] themeatbridge@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

What about muscle with a protective insulation coating? Like I can flex em and make em dance, but they're definitely under a layer.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 1 points 2 months ago

The pec is the muscle part. The layer is moob.

I'm in this picture and I like it cause it's funny, but also not accurate

I can't fight, never thrown a punch in my life, but I've had athletic people come at me thinking they could lay me down (friendly wrestling) and they couldn't (and ended up under me unable to move)

My only "street fight" ever ended in a few seconds cause the other guy (attacking me) felt like paper when I threw him away. He stood up and just walked away.

So no I would never think I can "take someone" cause I don't know how to and have little stamina, but don't underestimate big dudes too

There is a reason that weight classes / divisions exist.

Forgot the "Thinks his skills at hitting 100m targets will allow him to fight the government in a civil war situation"

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

That's genuinely good enough for urban warfare, considering it's less about what you can hit and more about how many other dudes are trying to do the same thing

Too bad a lot of these guys are rural

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org -1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Depends on how "the government" fights, too. Guns don't do shit against chemical warfare (tear gas etc.) or bombings. IMO, in a modern, developed state an insurgency can't get anywhere if the military isn't at least neutral, or they get support from foreign forces.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 2 points 2 months ago

Not paying a lot of attention to Myanmar I take it

[-] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago

Myanmar is exactly the kind of country that made me specify "modern, developed state". Their military ain't shit compared to the US or most european countries.
